Broadband sound power determination in flow ducts
No full textThis paper presents a new experimental technique, which enables not only the calculation of in-duct transmitted sound power for dominant tones, but also for broadband noise over a wide frequency range. The new method also distinguishes between sound power transmitted in and against the direction of flow. It can be performed using wall-flush installed pressure sensors as well as radial sensor rakes in the flow. The method is mathematically derived based on the analytical solution of the wave equation describing sound propagation in ducts with superimposed static mean flow. The analysis technique requires cross-correlation measurements, e.g. between azimuthally traversable sensor arrays and at least one fixed reference sensor. It assumes an invariant mean broadband noise sound field. The broadband sound power determination method was experimentally verified in a low speed DLR laboratory fan experiment against the ISO 5136 standard for in-duct sound power determination. The experimental setup consists of a single-stage compressor in a flow duct with a diameter of 500 mm. An azimuthally traversable duct section located 2m downstream of the rotor can be equipped alternatively with a sampling tube for measurements after ISO 5136 or microphone rakes for in-duct mode detection. For mode detection, 8 microphones were installed in the moving duct section, which was traversed over 36 azimuthal positions. A wall-flush mounted microphone was used as a reference sensor. Experimental results are presented for three operating conditions and two different compressor tip clearances

Protease Expression Levels in Prostate Cancer Tissue Can Explain Prostate Cancer-Associated Seminal Biomarkers-An Explorative Concept Study
No full textPreviously, we described prostate cancer (PCa) detection (83% sensitivity; 67% specificity) in seminal plasma by CE-MS/MS. Moreover, advanced disease was distinguished from organ-confined tumors with 80% sensitivity and 82% specificity. The discovered biomarkers were naturally occurring fragments of larger seminal proteins, predominantly semenogelin 1 and 2, representing endpoints of the ejaculate liquefaction. Here we identified proteases putatively involved in PCa specific protein cleavage, and examined gene expression and tissue protein levels, jointly with cell localization in normal prostate (nP), benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), seminal vesicles and PCa using qPCR, Western blotting and confocal laser scanning microscopy. We found differential gene expression of chymase (CMA1), matrix metalloproteinases (MMP3, MMP7), and upregulation of MMP14 and tissue inhibitors (TIMP1 and TIMP2) in BPH. In contrast tissue protein levels of MMP14 were downregulated in PCa. MMP3/TIMP1 and MMP7/TIMP1 ratios were decreased in BPH. In seminal vesicles, we found low-level expression of most proteases and, interestingly, we also detected TIMP1 and low levels of TIMP2. We conclude that MMP3 and MMP7 activity is different in PCa compared to BPH due to fine regulation by their inhibitor TIMP1. Our findings support the concept of seminal plasma biomarkers as non-invasive tool for PCa detection and risk stratification

ALK-1 mutations in liver transplanted patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia
No full textHereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder characterized by cutaneous and mucosal telangiectasias, epistaxis and arteriovenous malformations in lung, liver, central, nervous system, and gastrointestinal tract. Mutations in the genes for endoglin (ENG) and for activin A receptor type II-like kinase 1 (ALK-1) have been identified to be associated with HHT. Intrahepatic manifestation in HHT might lead to the requirement of liver transplantation. We report here on 6 liver transplanted patients and 2 who were scheduled for liver transplantation due to intrahepatic HHT, in whom both genes were sequenced. Mutation analysis revealed in all patients the presence of mutations in ALK-1. In conclusion, these results are of possible prognostic value concerning the need of liver transplantation in HHT patients

No full textI detta Meddelande nr 55 från Veterinärhistoriska museet har författaren - professor emeritus Lars-Erik Appelgren - gjort ett urval av den korrespondens som Peter Hernquist hade med sina mentorer Carl von Linné och Abraham Bäck under sin vistelse i Frankrike, varvid ”Lärda nyheter” varit en ledstjärna för urvalet. Speciellt har breven till Bäck försetts med författarens personliga kommentarer men även kompletterats med faktaupplysningar från andra källor än breven om berörda nyheter. För att underlätta läsningen har dessa kommentarer omgetts med enkelkonturerad och utvikningarna med dubbelkonturerad ram. Lars-Erik Appelgren har inte bara genom sitt veterinärhistoriska författarskap utan också genom att ställa sina fackliga kunskaper och sin eminenta estetiska läggning till förfogande gjort Veterinärhistoriska museet ovärderliga tjänster. Det är med stor glädje jag noterar att region Uppsala nyligen visat sin uppskattning genom att tilldela Lars-Erik sitt Medicinhistoriska stipendium med motiveringen att de vill ”lyfta fram ett viktigt men ofta förbisett område inom medicinhistorien: veterinärmedicinen”. Interpreting Wage Bargaining Norms
No full textFrom the mid-1990s onwards, Swedish wage bargaining has been characterised by informal co-ordination of the wage claims of big unions and bargaining cartels. In particular, it has been understood that the manufacturing sector should lead by first agreeing on a pay increase, whereafter the service sector and public sector unions choose a similar increase. We analyse his setup with two possible theoretical interpretations: (i) the manufacturing sector as a tackelberg leader and (ii) a normative role for the manufacturing sector’s pay increase, upported either by unmodelled social pressure or a modeled loss aversion (envy) of the heltered sector unions. The conclusion of the analysis is that the normative or leading role of one sector – in the Swedish case the manufacturing sector – can potentially bring big benefits for employment and output. Generalising an idea suggested by Lars Calmfors and Anna Larsson, our analysis also generates a rudimentary theory of why the wage increase norm sometimes binds and sometimes not. A comparison of the model predictions and the observed outcomes of the last five wage bargaining rounds in Sweden suggests that the model is generally consistent with the empirical observations: wage moderation and norm observance are stronger when the manufacturing industry’s initial relative wage is low.wage bargaining; bargaining co-ordination
