The role of stage presence in primary mathematics teachers' education

    No full text
The aim of this research is to cope with the expression challenge regarding the embodiment of mathematical ideas in primary teachers’ professional activity in the classroom. Our guess was that 20th century's approaches and technical contributions to actors and dancers training by Rudolf Laban (1879-1958), Émile-Jacques Delcroze (1865-1950) and Eugenio Barba (b. 1936) could be applied to the design of a specific math teachers dramatizing training (Laban 1948, 1971, Dalcroze 1921, Barba 1991). Starting in late 2012, theoretical research has been carried on along with the design, implementation and assessment of workshops with pre-service students (degree in Primary Education) and with in-service teachers. We discuss the theoretical framework, regarding 20th performance training, together with relevant mentions of the role of stage presence in the teaching of mathematics by two mathematicians and outstanding scholars in mathematics education, the Italian Federigo Enriques (1871-1946) and the Hungarian born American George Polya (1887-1985). The pedagogical aspects of mimesis, “a link between what is expressed and what really is” (Scaramuzzo 2010, 2013, 2016) were also considered, regarding both mathematics teachers education and professional development and pupil's learning of mathematics in preschool and primary school. We then considered the structure of 3-4 hours sessions and 16 hours workshops; the different exercises, regarding sight, motion in the space (the classroom),; the accompanying writing (personal notebooks or zibaldoni). We discussed our qualitative methodology in assessment (Van Manen 1990), the main results, and future research perspectives

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Immigration, policies of integration and healthcare expenditure: a longitudinal analysis of the INHS (2002‒2018)

Background: Immigration has become a structural phenomenon in Italy, a country reputed as being ‘immigrant-friendly’. The increase in the proportion of immigrants has led to increasing efforts to design and implement health policies throughout the country while controlling public spending. Method: Being interested in both the cross-sectional and time series dimensions of analysis, we used a PVAR (Panel Vector Autoregression) model, which combines the VAR technique with panel data models, to estimate the impact of regular immigration on health expenditure. Findings: Our results confirm that an increase in the share of regular immigrants in the total population decreases the amount of aggregate public health expenditure. Conclusion: Despite the intense activity by Italian governments on social and health integration policies for immigrants, policymakers may focus more on the implementation of national policies at regional and local levels, on their costs and with a specific focus on undocumented immigrants. © 202

The role of the stage presence in teaching math

During the winter semester 2014-2015 at the Department of Education of Roma Tre University took place a workshop about math teacher’s stage presence. The workshop developed the concept behind a pilot lesson held in November 2013 (Neri Macchiavena 2014) and work on mimesis in children maths education (Rachele 2013). Our aim was to cope with the communication challenge inherent to mathematics learning and teaching, including language challenge and the gesture beyond it, but more generally the expression challenge and the embodying of mathematical ideas. The research in 20th century theatre and dance inspired us rather than quantitative instruments from psychology or linguistics and rhetoric. Theory references which inspired the practice are described, both in theatre and performing training (Laban, 1948, 1971, Dalcroze 1921, Barba 1991, Scaramuzzo 2010, 2013) and in mathematics education (Enriques 1938, Polya 1945); the exercises and main findings are discussed

We discuss the introduction of elements of history of mathematics in primary school. Pedagogical goals are considered, as well as educational strategies, and a learning path spread over 5 grades (from 6 to 10 years old pupils) is presented. This is an action-research developed with qualitative methods. The History of mathematics was presented in single groups in several Italian primary schools in the years 2010-2016 by means of storytelling, using books for children, mainly by Italian authors. Great attention was paid to offering up-to-date historical knowledge. Results regarding understanding and involvement are consistent with Kieran Egan pro-posals regarding the teaching of history to children. The introduction of history of mathematics moves the focus of school mathematics from numeracy and technical skills to a humanistic education, with good results both for understanding and for the appreciation of mathematics

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
