Visual outcomes of bilateral congenital and developmental cataracts in young children in south India and causes of poor outcome.
CONTEXT: Bilateral pediatric cataracts are important cause of visual impairment in children. AIM: To study the outcome of bilateral pediatric cataract surgery in young children. SETTING AND DESIGN: Retrospective case series in a tertiary center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of pediatric cataracts operated between January 2001 and December 2003, with a minimum follow-up of 3 months, were reviewed retrospectively. STATISTICAL METHODS: Independent sample t-test, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science, Chicago, USA) version 12. RESULTS: 215/257 (83.7%) patients had a minimum follow-up of 3 months. The mean age of presentation to the hospital was 53 months (range: 0-168 months). Congenital cataract was present in 107 patients (58.2%) and developmental cataract in 77 patients (41.8%). The mean age at surgery was 55.2 months (range: 1-168 months). Out of 430 eyes, 269 (62.6%) had an intraocular lens implanted. The mean duration of follow-up was 13.1 months (range: 3-38 months). Pre-operatively, 102 patients (47.3%) had visual acuity 6/18. The most common early post-operative complication was fibrinous uveitis in 57 eyes (13.3%) and the most common delayed post-operative complication was posterior capsular opacification in 118 eyes (27.4%). The most important prognostic factor for poor outcome was congenital cataract (odds ratio [OR]: 26.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.4-158.5) and total cataract (OR: 4.8; 95% CI, 1.3-17). CONCLUSION: Nearly half of the eyes had visual acuity >6/18. The outcome was poorer in congenital cataracts, especially those operated after >1 year of age
The Revampa Lamp- An Interactive Lighting System that bridges the Gap between Aesthetics and Function within the Interior
This system of lighting has been produced for the “architecture of flavours” expo to be hosted on the 19th of April, 2016. My brief entailed producing lighting for 12 dinner tables that the invitees could interact with. The design is meant to stem from the menu that showcases food inspired from the “flavours” of three buildings as conceived by members of the graduating class of 2016 (shown below). The organisers of this event also want their guests to take an experience away from the evening, and have tasked me with making this idea come to fruition literally
A study of knowledge attitude practices and identification of perceived barriers towards screening for diabetic retinopathy amongst diabetics in an industrial area in western Maharashtra
Introduction and aim. Nursing fields begin to face a wide variety of challenges when they first enter clinical practice. The aim of this study is to determine the difficulties experienced in patient communication by nursing students taking the clinical practice course for the first time.
Material and methods. Focus group interview design was used for this study. Focus group design is used to give information about the opinions and experiences of the sample group on any subject. It is reported as a convenient design to identify different perspectives on a subject within the scope of the sample. Focus group interviews are a widely used method as data collection technique.
Results. The findings of the study continue on 4 main themes at level 3, by identifying the similarities and differences in the codes determined by the three experts (researchers consulted and the researcher conducting/reporting the study). The findings of the study were evaluated in comparison with the findings of the studies reached in the literature and conducted in regions such as Israel, Iran, Sri-Lanka, Kenya, and Africa.
Conclusion. There are many problems in student-patient communication in many different dimensions. The difficulties arising due to these problems generally focus on unknown clinical environment, lack of knowledge, differences between theory and practice, and mentor interaction
Effect of hydrodynamic cavitation water treatment on Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum-sensing molecules
Hydrodynamic cavitation treatment was used for the functional inactivation of quorum-sensing lactone molecules of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Hydroxyl radicals formed as well as the shear effects during the cavitation process induced the inactivation of the signal molecules through hydrolysis reaction coupled with bacterial destruction. Concentration of two different types of homoserine lactones (HSL) molecules was tested after the treatment at various rotational speeds. It was found that the strongest effects can be achieved at speeds > 2000 rpm. This value is considered as an onset speed of dominant cavitation, and it is in agreement with literature data. The experimental trends were in agreement with the calculations based on the finite element modelling, which show a significant increase in average shear stress at higher rotational speeds. Overall, the work has demonstrated the possible effects of hydrodynamic cavitation on the quorum-sensing molecules of Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the first time. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature
Two- to Eight-Month-Old Infants' Perception of Dynamic Auditory-Visual Spatial Colocation
From birth, infants detect associations between the locations of static visual objects and sounds they emit, but there is limited evidence regarding their sensitivity to the dynamic equivalent when a sound-emitting object moves. In 4 experiments involving thirty-six 2-month-olds, forty-eight 5-month-olds, and forty-eight 8-month-olds, we investigated infants' ability to process this form of spatial colocation. Whereas there was no evidence of spontaneous sensitivity, all age groups detected a dynamic colocation during habituation and looked longer at test trials in which sound and sight were dislocated. Only 2-month-olds showed clear sensitivity to the dislocation relation, although 8-month-olds did so following additional habituation. These results are discussed relative to the intersensory redundancy hypothesis and work suggesting increasing specificity in processing with age
Multiple description video coding for stereoscopic 3D
In this paper, we propose an MDC schemes for stereoscopic 3D video. In the literature, MDC has previously been applied in 2D video but not so much in 3D video. The proposed algorithm enhances the error resilience of the 3D video using the combination of even and odd frame based MDC while retaining good temporal prediction efficiency for video over error-prone networks. Improvements are made to the original even and odd frame MDC scheme by adding a controllable amount of side information to improve frame interpolation at the decoder. The side information is also sent according to the video sequence motion for further improvement. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated in error free and error prone environments especially for wireless channels. Simulation results show improved performance using the proposed MDC at high error rates compared to the single description coding (SDC) and the original even and odd frame MDC
Photon-rejection Power of the Light Dark Matter eXperiment in an 8 GeV Beam
The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is an electron-beam fixed-target
experiment designed to achieve comprehensive model independent sensitivity to
dark matter particles in the sub-GeV mass region. An upgrade to the LCLS-II
accelerator will increase the beam energy available to LDMX from 4 to 8 GeV.
Using detailed GEANT4-based simulations, we investigate the effect of the
increased beam energy on the capabilities to separate signal and background,
and demonstrate that the veto methodology developed for 4 GeV successfully
rejects photon-induced backgrounds for at least electrons on
