Dark matter prospects with COSI: ALPs, PBHs and sub-GeV dark matter
We study the prospects in the search of dark matter offered by the newly selected NASA MeV mission COSI (Compton Spectrometer and Imager). This instrument is designed and optimized to detect spectral lines, and we show it offers an exquisite possibility to detect dark matter directly decaying or annihilating into monochromatic gamma-rays. This is the case, for example, for axion-like particles (ALPs) which undergo decay into two photons. Furthermore, we show that COSI can lead to important progress in the quest for primordial black holes (PBHs) dark matter, through measurements of the 511 keV line from the positrons produced via Hawking evaporation. We also outline opportunities for the search of continuum signals, such as those expected from sub-GeV dark matter annihilation/decay into leptons and PBH evaporation into photons. We find that also in this case COSI can lead to improvements of current bounds
Natural risk assessment and managment
"Natural risk assessment and managment" is a chapter of the "Handbook on Urban Sustainability", edited by Nolberto Munier. A book which addresses the sustainable development of a city.
In particular Michela Tiboni deals with a subject rarely seen in the technical literature: Risk management. It refers to risks related with land uses, and as the author rightly states its aim is to reduce danger for human beings and the environment. Some projects are built on terrains that have characteristics that make then unsuitable for that kind of project. Others alter the natural flow of water during storms, paving the way to floods, and cave ins. Both can generate action-reaction response. This Chapter presents the necessary guidelines to evaluate a risk involved in the construction of a project. This is something that has to be carefully considered to avoid future consequences, which can turn to be catastrophic. Remember, most human activities modify the environment, and it is then necessary to evaluate the consequences of such actions
ACERCA DEL REALISMO PERSPECTIVISTA DE MICHELA MASSIMI
In Perspectival Realism (2022), Michela Massimi seeks to make compatible two positions usually presented as irreconcilable: pluralistic perspectivism and scientific realism. It is shown that the strategy adopted by the author in pursuit of the proposed objective is unsuccessful. However, this does not imply that both positions are decidedly incompatible. We put forward an alternative proposal that allows scientific realism and pluralism to be coherently reconciled.

The beginnings of pPhilosophy in Greece
How can we talk about the beginnings of philosophy today? How can we avoid the conventional opposition of mythology and the dawn of reason and instead explore the multiple styles of thought that emerged between them? In this acclaimed book, available in English for the first time, Maria Michela Sassi reconstructs the intellectual world of the early Greek “Presocratics” to provide a richer understanding of the roots of what used to be called “the Greek miracle.”
The beginnings of the long process leading to philosophy were characterized by intellectual diversity and geographic polycentrism. In the sixth and fifth centuries BC, between the Asian shores of Ionia and the Greek city-states of southern Italy, thinkers started to reflect on the cosmic order, elaborate doctrines on the soul, write in solemn Homeric meter, or, later, abandon poetry for an assertive prose. And yet the Presocratics, whether the Milesian natural thinkers, the rhapsode Xenophanes, the mathematician and “shaman” Pythagoras, the naturalist and seer Empedocles, the oracular Heraclitus, or the inspired Parmenides, all shared an approach to critical thinking that, by questioning traditional viewpoints, revolutionized knowledge.
A unique study that explores the full range of early Greek thinkers in the context of their worlds, the book also features a new introduction to the English edition in which the author discusses the latest scholarship on the subject
Girolamo Fabrici d'Acquapendente, De locutione, De brutorum loquela.
This book gives the first modern edition of two important treatises on language and animal language written by the Italian anatomist and surgeon Girolamo Fabrici of Acquapendente (1533-1619), dating back respectively to 1601 and 1603. Deeply rooted into the aristotelian tradition of the Padua University, these treatises represent the first investigation of the biological foundations of language (also from a comparative viewpoint) in the first Modern Age. After Fabrici's death the two writings were often reprinted up the Midth 18th century, but in a very uncorrect editorial form. The texts have been fully emendated for the present edition, and carefully commented from both a historical and a philosophical-linguistic viewpoint. Both the sections of the "Introduction" by Gensini and the commented edition of the "De brutorum loquela" by the same author insist on Fabrici's original position regarding cognitive capabilities and genuine 'language(s)' (loquela) typical of non-human animals. Drawing on ancient sources such as Aristotle's biological writings, Plutarch's Moralia and Porphyry's De Abstinentia, Fabrici was able to depict animal language(s) in terms of complex behaviors, grounded on species-specific anatomical characters and psychological powers

Inferring astrophysical X-ray polarization with deep learning
Eighth Internation Conference on Learning Representations (ICRL 2020)We investigate the use of deep learning in the context of X-ray polarization detection from astrophysical sources as will be observed by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), a future NASA selected space-based mission expected to be operative in 2021. In particular, we propose two models that can be used to estimate the impact point as well as the polarization direction of the incoming radiation. The results obtained show that data-driven approaches depict a promising alternative to the existing analytical approaches. We also discuss problems and challenges to be addressed in the near future. We want to thank the DarkMachines collaboration for bringing us together and for fruitful discussions. Michela Negro
wants to acknowledge the IXPE team and in particular Niccoló Di Lalla and Alberto Manfreda for providing the
