Burning mouth syndrome
Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is a frequent disease characterized by a burning or painful sensation in the tongue and/or other oral sites without clinical mucosal abnormalities or lesions. The etiopathology is unknown although local, systemic and psychological factors have been connected with BMS. As this syndrome is a multifactorial disease, the diagnostic and therapeutic approach should be multidisciplinary. In this paper a review of the literature is presented and the most recent advancement on clinical, etiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of BMS are discussed
Symptoms and musculoskeletal diseases in hospital nurses and in a group of university employees: a cross-sectional study
Background. Most studies have shown that nurses have a higher risk of developing musculoskeletal symptoms compared with other occupational groups. Aim. A cross-sectional study was performed to gain more insight into the prevalence rates of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in nurses. Methods. The presence of musculoskeletal symptoms was revealed by personal interviews in a sample of 177 hospital nurses and in a reference group of 185 university employees. Musculoskeletal diseases were based on radiological examinations in all subjects. Results. Lower back pain (61% vs 42.2%) was the most frequently reported symptom, followed by neck pain (48.6% vs 38.4%) and shoulder pain (36.7% vs 25.9%), with a significantly higher prevalence in nurses. Women had about a 2-fold risk of upper limb region and neck pain compared with men. The most common abnormal findings on radiological examinations were disc herniations (n = 40). Conclusions. Nurses showed a significantly higher risk of MSDs. Prevalence rates in nurses increased significantly with age. Musculoskeletal symptoms were also common in university employees. This suggests the need for effective intervention strategies involving workers’ active participation, in order to improve the process and organization of work and promote a positive psychosocial work environment
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Essential oil variability in Thymbra capitata (L) Cav. growing wild in Sourthen Apulia (Italy)
Essential oils of Thymbra capitata (Thymus capitatus) collected from Southern Apulia (Italy) were analysed using gas chroma- tography and gas chromatographyemass spectrometry techniques, to check for chemical variability. The study showed that among the 75 components of the oils the most recurrent ones were thymol and carvacrol, which always constituted more than 50% of the oils, as well as g-terpinene, borneol and p-cymene. Cluster analysis led to the identification of three chemotypes: thymol, carvacrol and thymol/carvacrol; this was presumably a crossbreed between the other two chemotypes. Principal component analysis showed the direct correlation among myrcene, a-terpinene and g-terpinene; anti-correlation between thymol and carvacrol, and the inverse correlation between linalool and myrcene. Moreover, lower thymol concentrations were accompanied by an increase in myrcene, a-terpinene and g-terpinene
