Therapeutic consultation, early detection of alarm symptoms in infants and treatment with parent-infant psychotherapy

    No full text
Chapter 6, by Negri, presents the infant from a neurodevelopmental and psychological perspective. She works in Bergamo, Italy, and in her therapeutic consultations, which treat disorders in the parent-child relationship, she links the infant's neurological development with his or her emerging emotional life. Negri describes her way of observing infants and parents - inspired by Bick's method of infant observation - that focuses on infants who present autistic-like symptoms. She calls these "alarm symptoms" - they are present in children at risk, and may become a predominant part of their personality in that there is a loss of variability and a decrease in the ability to interact with the environment. Negri helps parents to draw their baby out of potential autistic encapsulations (Alvarez 1992, Tustin 1981). Her supportive affirming of parental strengths and non-interpretative guidance is rooted in her deep understanding of the unconscious relationship between parents and sick babies. We read that Daniel, a very troubled baby at risk of developing a serious psychopatology, is now a healthy seventeen-year-old young man, thanks to his parents' courage and trust in Negri's sensitive therapeutic input

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Foundation and empire : a critique of Hardt and Negri

    No full text
In this article, Thompson complements recent critiques of Hardt and Negri's Empire (see Finn Bowring in Capital and Class, no. 83) using the tools of labour process theory to critique the political economy of Empire, and to note its unfortunate similarities to conventional theories of the knowledge economy

On the finitization of Priorean linear time

    No full text
A labelled sequent calculus for Priorean linear time is defined through the method of internalization of the possible-worlds semantics into the syntax. The calculus enjoys desirable structural properties, such as syntactic cut elimination, but requires an infinitary mathematical rule stating that between any two points there are only finitely many points. By replacing the infinitary rule with two weaker finitary rules a system for non-standard discrete frames is obtained. A conservativity result for an appropriate fragment of the original calculus is proved syntactically
