This memorandum dated February 21, 1955, from unknown author to United States (US) Senator William Langer, written on US Senate memorandum stationery, reads: Senator: Mr. Chumbers [sic] called, said he has talked to Commissioner Emmons, but Mr. Emmons has been unable to clear with the Secretary of the Interior as to the Federal government\u27s reimbursing the State of N. Dak. for their expenses. Because of the Holiday tomorrow, he may not get a report from the Secretary before Thursday. Mr. Chumbers most likely refers to Pete Chumbris, to whom other documents in the Langer papers of this period refer. Commission Emmons most likely refers to Glenn L. Emmons, Commissioner of the United States (US) Bureau of Indian Affairs. Citation: Gaire, B., Gatton, A., Wiegandt, F., Neff, J., Janke, C., Zeller, S., . . . Weber, T. (2016). Bond-rearrangement and ionization mechanisms in the photo-double-ionization of simple hydrocarbons (C2H4, C2H3F, and 1,1-C2H2F2) near and above threshold. Physical Review A, 94(3), 8. doi:10.1103/PhysRevA.94.033412We investigate bond-rearrangement driven by photo-double-ionization (PDI) near and above the double-ionization threshold in a sequence of carbon-carbon double-bonded hydrocarbon molecules: ethylene, fluoroethylene, and 1,1-difluoroethylene. We employ the kinematically complete cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy method to resolve all photo-double-ionization events leading to two-ion fragments. We observe changes in the branching ratios of different dissociative ionization channels depending on the presence of no, one, or two fluorine atoms. The role of the fluorine atom in the bond-rearrangement channels is intriguing, as evident by the reordering of the threshold energies of the PDI in the fluorinated molecules. These effects offer a compelling argument that the electronegativity of the fluorine (or the polarity of the molecule) strongly influences the potential energy surfaces of the molecules and drives bond rearrangement during the dissociation process. The energy sharing and the relative angle between the three-dimensional momentum vectors of the two electrons enable us to distinguish between knockout and other ionization mechanisms of the PDI processes

Male-female relations in Tahar Ben Jelloun\u27s L\u27homme rompu and La nuit de l\u27erreur

My dissertation consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. The second chapter deals with methodological issues. The third chapter is an analysis of L\u27Homme rompu. The fourth chapter is an analysis of La Nuit de l\u27erreur. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. In the first chapter, I introduce the author Tahar Ben Jelloun and his oeuvre. This chapter includes a survey of the scholarship that has already been generated in the field of Ben Jelloun studies. I also discuss my reasons for choosing L\u27Homme rompu and La Nuit de l\u27erreur as my primary texts. The second chapter concerns the theoretical and methodological framework grounding my analysis. Identifying the sociological undercurrent underlying my dissertation, the chapter includes a discussion of traditional Moroccan social structures and addresses the subordination of the female as well as the issue of power that is seen by feminists and by sociologists as central to the question of male-female relations. Arguing that an analysis of power may be employed to bring to light male-female relations in the chosen novels, I propose the analytical model delineated by Amy Allen in Foucault on Power: A Theory for Feminists . My third and the fourth chapters are devoted to the analysis of each of the selected texts, L\u27Homme rompu and La Nuit de l\u27erreur respectively. Since male-female relations in the Arab-Islamic world cannot be dissociated from the question of the status of the female, I analyze the subordination/victimization of the female as well as the conflict between the male and the female that is folded in the narratives of these two texts. My analysis addresses the subordination/victimization of the female as well as her power. In the fifth and concluding chapter, I present some concluding remarks pertaining to the male-female power dynamic based on the analysis in the two preceding chapters. Synthesizing my analysis in terms of the narrative development within the novels, I discuss the consequences of the conflictual male-female dynamic on the male in particular. I argue that while the novels denounce the subordination/victimization of the female, Ben Jelloun\u27s male protagonist also endures suffering and misery as a result of disharmonious male-female relations. I finally discuss the optimism that I surmise emerges in the conclusions of these two novels

Redefining Ben: challenging the effects of mental health care on identity formation in children and adolescents

    No full text
This case study raises the question of the effect of mental health treatment on the developing sense of self through the examination of the experience of a teen growing up in residential care. Ben, an adolescent with a history of selective mutism, presents with a maladaptive identification with mental illness. He has incorporated its vocabulary into everyday conversation, and converted typical emotional reactions to the pathological. The influences of the culture within a residential setting, coupled with the impact of the discourse held during therapeutic sessions connect Ben's sense of self with the mental health treatment he received. The use of expressive therapy, namely Cinematherapy, is highlighted as a means to protect self-esteem while challenging Ben's over-identification with mental illness.DSWIncludes bibliographical referencesby Barbara L. The singularities and birational geometry of the universal compactified Jacobian

    No full text
In this paper we establish that the singularities of the universal compactified Jacobian are canonical if the genus is at least four. As a corollary we determine the Kodaira dimension and the Iitaka fibration of the universal compactified Jacobian for every degree and genus. We also determine the birational automorphism group for every degree if the genus is at least twelve. This extends work of G. Farkas and A. Verra, as well as that of G. Bini, C. Fontanari and the third author

Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing

    No full text
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories
