Ep. #072 - Alexei Yurchak
This recording and transcript form part of a collection of podcasts conducted by the Cultures of Energy at Rice University. Cultures of Energy brings writers, artists and scholars together to talk, think and feel their way into the Anthropocene. We cover serious issues like climate change, species extinction and energy transition. But we also try to confront seemingly huge and insurmountable problems with insight, creativity and laughter. To help us sort through a week dominated by spiraling Russo-American political intrigue, we welcome (13:01) to the podcast Berkeley anthropologist, Alexei Yurchak, analyst extraordinaire of all things late Soviet and post Soviet, and author of the award-winning Everything was Forever Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation (Princeton, 2005). We trace the connections between that project’s exploration of culture and politics at the end of state socialism and Alexei’s current research on the scientists who have been working to preserve Lenin’s body since 1924. We talk about the fascinating intersection of biopolitics and necropolitics involved in the effort to maintain Lenin’s body in a lifelike state for almost a century, how discursive hegemony of form in the late Soviet period also informed corporeal hegemony of form, the results of this science that you can find in your own pharmacy, and the network of political leaders’ bodies across the world that Soviet and now Russian scientists have worked to preserve. Alexei dispels the idea that cloning was ever on the table in this project; but explains that his interlocutors do believe that they can now keep Lenin’s body in a near-life state in perpetuity. We return from there to the contemporary political chaos and what Alexei makes of the Trump-Putin entanglement stories currently dominating the headlines. Alexei shares his concerns about the powerful return of Russophobia to the United States, about what popular characterizations of Russia get wrong, and about how anti-Russian sentiment may provide a convenient excuse to defer a serious examination of the root causes of Trumpism. Ready to take a break from the political hysteria? Then listen on
The Influence of the Gold Particle Size on the Catalytic Oxidation of 5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural
For the production of chemicals from biomass, new selective processes are required. The selective oxidation of 5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), a promising platform molecule in fine chemistry, to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is considered a promising approach and requires the oxidation of two functional groups. In this study, Au/ZrO2 catalysts with different mean particle sizes were prepared by a chemical reduction method using tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) and tested in HMF oxidation. The catalyst with the smallest mean particle size (2.1 nm) and the narrowest particle size distribution was highly active in the oxidation of the aldehyde moiety of HMF, but less active in alcohol oxidation. On the other hand, increased activity in FDCA synthesis up to 92% yield was observed over catalysts with a larger mean particle size (2.7 nm), which had a large fraction of small and some larger particles. A decreasing FDCA yield over the catalyst with the largest mean particle size (2.9 nm) indicates that the oxidation of both functional groups require different particle sizes and hint at the presence of an optimal particle size for both oxidation steps. The activity of Au particles seems to be influenced by surface steps and H bonding strength, the latter particularly in aldehyde oxidation. Therefore, the presence of both small and some larger Au particles seem to give catalysts with the highest catalytic activity
The First Name Alexei: a Motif in The Brothers Karamazov
The article studies the problem of the hypothesis foundation of the autobiographic motivation for Alexei Karamazov's name with reference to the poetics of the novel The Brothers Karamazov. The author argues that Dostoyevsky's memories of his younger son determine the topic and a number of the novel's most significant motifs to a considerable extent, one of the motifs being the name Alexei proper
Alexei Miller, The Romanov Empire and Nationalism
A new imperial history of the Russian Empire hardly breaks new ground — reprints of older publications show that this paradigm shift is well established by now. However, Alexei Miller’s anthology demonstrates that this approach can still pose stimulating questions and provide complex and unexpected answers. The book presents more than a welcomed English collection of Miller’s main publications: some of the contributions are new, some have undergone “significant changes,” as the author puts it..

PKE-Nefedov*: Plasma crystal experiments on the International Space Station
The plasma crystal experiment PKE-Nefedov, the first basic science experiment on the International Space Station (ISS), was installed in February 2001 by the first permanent crew. It is designed for long-term investigations of complex plasmas under microgravity conditions. 'Complex plasmas' contain ions, electrons, neutrals and small solid particles - normally in the micrometre range. These microparticles obtain thousands of elementary charges and interact with each other via a 'screened' Coulomb potential. Complex plasmas are of special interest, because they can form liquid and crystalline states (Thomas et al 1994 Phys. Rev. Lett. 73 652-5, Chu and I 1994 Phys. Rev. Lett. 72 4009-12) and are observable at the kinetic level. In experiments on Earth the microparticles are usually suspended against gravity in strong electric fields. This creates asymmetries, stresses and pseudo-equilibrium states with sufficient free energy to readily become unstable. Under microgravity conditions the microparticles move into the bulk of the plasma (Morfill et al 1999 Phys. Rev. Lett. 83 1598), experiencing much weaker volume forces than on Earth. This allows investigations of the thermodynamics of strongly coupled plasma states under substantially stress-free conditions. In this first paper we report our results on plasma crystals, in particular the first experimental observations of bcc lattice structures
Proiecţii asupra spaţiului concentraţionar în "Eu şi lumea" de Alexei Marinat
This article approaches the theme of concentrationary space, a less discussed topic in the detention memoirs, a genre dominated by the uncertainty of the dissident-protagonist and by the Communist imprisonment regime. The main coordinates of the concentrationary communist universe Alexei Marinat’sMe and the Worldare highlighted by trying to recreate the Bessarabian Gulag memory and the oppression of the Communist regime characterizing that period. The artistic devices point at the coordinates of the concentrationary space and at the documentary and survival purpose, primarily pursued by the author. The article also seeks to analyse the stylistic register used by Alexei Marinat, which is a way of highlighting the concentrationary reality.Melnic, Svetlana. The new diffractometer for surface X-ray diffraction at beamline BL9 of DELTA
The experimental endstation of the hard X-ray beamline BL9 of the Dortmund Electron Accelerator is equipped with a Huber six-circle diffractometer. It is dedicated to grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectivity experiments on solid surfaces and thin films as well as to powder diffraction measurements. A new set-up for grazing-incidence X-ray scattering of liquids has been built up using a silicon mirror to reflect the incident X-ray to the liquid surface at angles of incidence around the critical angle of total reflection of the sample. X-ray reflectivity measurements of a polymer film and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction measurements of an epitaxically grown Gd40Y60 film, an oxidized surface of Fe-15at.%Al alloy and aqueous salt solutions are presented and discussed
