Coolie cartography: crossing frontiers through coolitude
Following the abolition of Transatlantic slavery, the British introduced a new scheme of labour to replace the former. 'Indian indentureship', as it was referred to, affected nearly 2 million Indian coolies who defied the traditional ban against crossing the kala pani (dark waters) in order to work on plantations in countries such as British Guiana, Trinidad, Malaya, South Africa and Fiji. In effect, the Indian labour: diaspora emerged and established itself across the globe. Despite over 100 years of labouring and contributing to the development of their new homes, the coolies and their descendents still face political, social and cultural marginalization. The aim of this thesis is to explore the consequences of indentureship in various societies through a parallelization of inter-national coolie conditions as represented by writers of the diaspora. The three areas selected for this study are Guyana, Malaysia and Fiji. David Dabydeen (Guyana), K.S.Maniam (Malaysia) and Satendra Nandan (Fiji) all share the impetus to disclose the past as a portal into the present, thereby dismpting normative time, and by implication, a fixed sense of history. However; the most striking similarity between these writers, despite their geographical and social distance, is their literary method which centres on the theory of coolitude. Coolitude was coined by Khal Torabully as a means of recuperating the voiceless coolie, firstly, by re-membering the sea voyage across the kizla pani and secondly, by highlighting the coolie's place in the mosaic of multicultural societies. Chapter 1 details the historical, theoretical and methodical foundations of the thesis. Chapter 2 explores Dabydeen's novels The Counting House and Our Lady of Demerara while Chapter 3 is a detailed study of Maniam's novels The Return and In A Far Country. The final chapter considers Nandan's novel The Wounded Sea and collection of poetry Lines Across Black Waters. Each literary analysis seeks to understand how coolitude, as a means to historically and politically place the coolie in the current world,: links spaces between countries both through a shared colonial history and a common postcolonial condition
Cooling Crystallization of Paracetamol in a Slug-Flow Crystallizer with Silicone Oil as Continuous Phase
Continuous tubular crystallizers that can provide high yield and better control of crystal size would be of great interest to the industrial crystallization process. However, most continuous crystallizer designs face challenges either due to surface fouling or crystal breakage. In this paper, we explore the ability of slug-flow cooling crystallizers to continuously generate acetaminophen crystals using silicone oil as the continuous phase. Each slug acts as a crystallizer, and the crystals formed inside the dispersed phase avoid encrustation. Three crystallizer configurations were studied at a wide range of supersaturation and flow rates. It was found that a narrow crystal size distribution can be achieved at high flow rates and high supersaturation. Additionally, the average crystal size and the crystallization yield increased with supersaturation and residence time. The configuration of the tubular crystallizer was found to influence the crystallization yield by affecting the internal mixing in the slugs. With further studies, slug-flow cooling crystallizer can be developed for continuous crystallization of crystals with a narrow size distribution, polymorphic purity, and good yield

The author emphasises the need to acknowledge the fact that the SEBCs need not necessarily be a homogeneous, coherent group of people. Solution Cocrystallization: A Scalable Approach for Cocrystal Production
With an increasing interest in cocrystals due to various advantages, demand for large-scale cocrystallization techniques is rising. Solution cocrystallization is a solvent-based approach that utilizes several single-component crystallization concepts as well as equipment for generating cocrystals. Solution-based techniques can produce cocrystals with reasonable control on purity, size distribution, morphology, and polymorphic form. Many of them also offer a scalable solution for the industrial production of cocrystals. However, the complexity of the thermodynamic landscape and the kinetics of cocrystallization offers fresh challenges which are not encountered in single component crystallization. This review focuses on the recent developments in different solution cocrystallization techniques for the production of pharmaceutically relevant cocrystals. The review consists of two sections. The first section describes the various solution cocrystallization methods, highlighting their benefits and limitations. The second section emphasizes the challenges in developing these techniques to an industrial scale and identifies the major thrust areas where further research is required
Lightning Audio: Plasma Arc Speaker Technology and Marketability
abstract: The Lightning Audio capstone group, consisting of Brian Boerhinger, Rahul Nandan, Jaime Ramirez, and Niccolo Magnotto (myself), united in the effort to prove the feasibility of a consumer grade plasma arc speaker. This was achieved in group's prototype design, which demonstrates the potential for a refined product in its conventional interfacing, casing, size, safety, and aesthetics. If the potential for an excellent ionization-based loudspeaker product were realized, it would be highly profitable in its reasonable cost of production, novelty, and place in a large and fitting market
Label free ultra-sensitive imaging with sub-diffraction spatial resolution
In this paper, we show a new way to break the resolution limit and dramatically improve sensitivity to structural
changes. To realize it we developed a novel label free contrast mechanism, based on the spectral encoding of
spatial frequency (SESF) approach. The super-resolution SESF (srSESF) microscopy is based on reconstruction
of the axial spatial frequency (period) profiles for each image point and comparison of these profiles to form
super-resolution image. As a result, the information content of images is dramatically improved in comparison
with conventional microscopy. Numerical simulation and experiments demonstrate significant improvement in
