Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Psychic issues of the engagement and the activism in political parties during adolescence and early adulthood : psychodynamic and projective approach

If political parties are often referred as "traditional" and therefore "outdated" institutions, they continue anyhow to participate in "living together" and are still the main institutions that compete in local and national elections. Their main target is the conquest and the exercise of power at all steps. Despite the mistrust in these institutions, especially among adolescents and young adults, some of them are still engaging and militating, sometimes intensely, in the party-political youth organizations of political parties. Our thesis aims to highlight psychic issues of the adolescents and young adults' involvement in political parties. In an attempt to take those stakes into account, two questions guided our research. Firstly, In France today, what are the psychic functioning modalities of adolescents and young adults who militate in a political party, what are their eventual common psychic characteristics? Secondly, regarding the psychic processes mobilized in adolescence and early adulthood for these subjects, what would be the function and effect of the engagement and militancy in a political party? Between January 2015 and June 2016, thirty-six young activists, aged between 18 and 26, agreed to participate in the research. Political organizations in which these young activists committed themselves represent the entire political spectrum, from the extreme left to the far right. In order to address the questions raised a methodology including both individual semi-structured interviews and projective tests (Rorschach and TAT) has been set up. While the projective tests enable us to apprehend shrewdly the characteristics of the young militants individual psychic functioning, individual interviews provide valuable insights of their personal story and their militant journey. First of all, the results show the heterogeneity of the psychic resources and fragilities according each militant, which leads us to believe that there is no specific psychological profile for this population. However, we find common characteristics among National Front activist, which conduct us to make the hypothesis of a resonance between these psychic characteristics and this political party's advocated ideas and ideals. A question remains: why don't we find the same phenomenon amongst the other political parties and related activists; in that regard, a reflection path is proposed in this thesis. Moreover, the findings of this study, allow us to state that a political party can provide a more or less effective support for the management of the psychic conflicts peculiar to the adolescence and to the adulthood. Does the effectiveness of this support exclusively depend the resources and psychic weaknesses preexisting in young activists? It would seem not. This research shows that the framework of political organization is far from contingent to the activists' individual psychic functioning. Thus, it is important to consider both the psychic functioning has been built through the individual history of the militants, and the organizational constraints they confront, in order to evaluate, from a psychic point of view, the extent to which this commitment has a mutative effect

About creativity and its expressions among students from grandes ecoles (business and engineering schools)

This research in psychoanalysis and projective psychology examines the French « Grandes Ecoles » and preparatory class system, from the angle of creativity. These intensive courses called « prepa classes » are the most common way to enter the « Grandes Ecoles » (French Elite Establishments, mainly Business and Engineering Schools). This research also explores how the Teen prepa students, who are going through the adolescence process at work, can find way to resolve their conflicts through the prepa way of life. If adolescence impulses creativity, the prepa class system enhances sublimation, this pulsionnal conversion leading to the most beautiful productions. These considerations, supported by a metapsychological analysis about creativity and its link with sublimation, lead us to make the assumption that the "Grandes Ecoles" students, after the prepa classes, should be particularly creative. A strong dedication to work, moved by the very utmost desire of learning, as well as a touch of nostalgia, due to the loss of childhood, could reinforce this ability. We interviewed and tested - with projective methods - twenty « Grandes Ecoles » students, belonging to two groups : the first one had joined the Engineering or Business Schools after preparatory classes, the second one had joined them by other ways. Our results confirm that students from prepa classes show more easily their creative potential than the others . The research goes on to question how creativity is expressed after graduation and in particular, among top-level mathematicians

Jean Laplanche's translational model : a theoretical and clinical exploration

    No full text
This research explores Jean Laplanche's translational model from both a clinical and theoretical perspective. Laplanche spent his life translating Freud from the German and studying Freud in a non-dogmatic way. His critique of Freud's contradictions and theoretical impasses aimed to renew French psychoanalytic thought which in the 1960s and 70s was either stagnating or under the domination of Lacan's interpretation of Freud. His « translational model » reflects this heritage: his wish was to reinvent a theory open to discussion and criticism, opening new avenues for psychoanalytic research. The author's interest in Laplanche's theory stems from her own experience as a psychoanalyst and translator. The translational model is thus the result of rigorous research and experience; its aim is, among others, to rethink the origin and function of the sexual drives. Laplanche criticizes the Freudian theory whereby the source of the drives is to be found in bodily excitation. For Laplanche, the drives are not "mythical entities" but the result of the traumatic confrontation between the infant and the sexual adult. The infant's drive to "translate" thus comes from the "implantation" of sexual drives through enigmatic messages unwittingly transmitted by the caring adult. This adult can be related to the Nebenmensch Freud wrote about in his Project for a scientific psychology (1895). Indeed, in Laplanche's model, translation is the first psychic activity of the infant, born helpless, passive and dependent on adult care. What the child is unable to process becomes an untranslated "left-over", implanted in the child's body or in the deeper recesses of the unrepresented unconscious (the unconscious of primary repression), offering itself up to future translation. The question then arises: how can this "translational process" be clinically described? Is the term "translation" appropriate? Can translation be considered at once as the origin and a vicissitude of the drives? Laplanche based his exploration of the origins of the individual repressed unconscious on his close study of Freud's early works, in particular Freud's own "translational model" described in a letter to Fliess of 1896. His investigation led him to return to the theory of seduction as a "repressed theory" of psychoanalysis, extending its meaning to a general theory of the origins of infantile sexuality: seduction is at the root of all adult-child relationships, he says, and for this reason we have all been and continue to be "infant translators". His model is not a linguistic model in that translation comes before language. The clinical examples focus on what Laplanche called the process of « translation-detranslation-retranslation », with a special emphasis on "detranslation" in the context of the analytic situation, in the "après-coup" of the transference relationship between patient and analyst. This back-and-forth, circular movement between primary and secondary processes can be compared to the internal, psychic, and non-verbal work of the translator as s/he explores the infinite creative potential resulting from the encounter between source and target languages. This movement, triggered by the analytic frame and symbolized by what Laplanche calls the "fundamental anthropological situation" makes it possible for the patient to reignite processes frozen by infantile fixations. Can "translation" become a psychoanalytic concept, and if so, what could it mean, as opposed to existing concepts (such as symbolization or sublimation)? If one considers that the activity of translation itself is rooted in infantile sexuality and autoerotism, do we need the term "detranslation"? My research thus aims to explore the productivity of this model for psychoanalytic research. Can Laplanche's model be used not as a rigid tool but as an object of theoretical and clinical exploration... and further translation

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
