Trust building and social capital as development policy tools in rural areas. An empirical analysis: the case of the LAG CDNISAT
Over the last few years, the literature on rural development has widely demonstrated that social capital is an essential factor to starting and maintaining durable economic development processes especially in disadvantaged rural areas. Indeed, the Local Action Groups (LAGs) elaborate and implement Local Development Plans (LDPs) aiming at involving socio-economic bodies and local communities in a relational network based on trust so that social capital may be built or increased and virtuous development mechanisms triggered.
The empirical model thus defined was applied in order to investigate the relational process and trust-building dynamics implemented by the LAG Consortium for the Development of the Northern Ionian Sea Area of Taranto (CDNISAT). The aim of this research is to verify the capacity of LAGs to contribute towards the creation of social capital in rural areas where it is scarce by means of developing a fiduciary relationship network.
The applied methodology allowed us to measure the level of trust created by the LAG within the relationships among socio-economic bodies that benefited from the measures implemented through the Local Development Plans (LDPs) as well as to identify what factors -more than others- influenced the process of achieving adequate levels of trust within the action strategies of LAGs.
The results ", were very significant as they highlighted how the LAG's good performance on building trust-based networks was limited only to the beneficiaries of the Development Plan, whereas its action proved to be only partially effective in creating an atmosphere of collective trust at local level
The scientific and editorial history of the journal Economia agro-alimentare
Summary: This short note presents an overview of the editorial path of journal Economia agro-alimentare during the past 20 years, from the journal’s inception in 1996 through 2015. The paper is aimed at highlighting the publication’s contribution to the scientific analysis of the food economy. A wide set of relevant areas of interest and trends emerged from the analysis of 382 published papers. Perspectives of the journal in the international literature are discussed
Responsible Innovation in the Wine Sector: A Distinctive Value Strategy
AbstractInnovation can be a driver for value creation, variously understood. The emergence of Corporate Social Responsibility highlighted many potential benefits descending from innovation in industries traditionally considered “low-tech”, where the spheres of value concerning the environment and society are of particular importance in the eyes of a consumer who behaves like a “responsible citizen”. This paper examines a case of “responsible innovation” in an wine cooperative, from which internal and external effects originate, able to increase the multiple dimensions of value, involving both the project leader and the territory
Land degradation and climate change: Global impact on wheat yields
This study aims at estimating the wheat yield response to future challenges (land degradation and climate change) through a statistical emulator. Data from Global Agro-ecological Zones on the overall wheat yields of 254 provinces for nine main wheat-producing countries and corresponding climate and land suitability information were collected to estimate the statistical relationship between regressors and wheat yields. Once the statistical emulator was calibrated, three scenarios were developed to predict, separately and jointly, the impact of climate change and land degradation on wheat yields and productions in 2050 using the global climate model ECHAM4 information under the B2 scenario with the CO2 fertilization effect. Results showed that under temperature and precipitation projections wheat yield would increase on average by 8% (first scenario); however, the impact of future land suitability (second scenario) on wheat yields would be negative, lowering the average yield (−5%), and overall wheat production (−14%). Combining both effects in the third scenario, future wheat yields would increase by 4.6%, while overall production will decrease by 5.5% since the harvest area will be reduced by 9.7%. Thus, land degradation more than climate change is likely to pose significant challenges for overall wheat production in the future
Implementing the Future Rural Policy. A Multi-stakeholder Governance Test in Reality
In a changing and turbulent economic global scenario, the public sustain to agriculture will
face counteracting local forces originating from some local actors, unwilling to accept all the
facets of the CAP and the RDP. Power and leadership of actors and main social leader can help
or contrasts implementation of public policies. So that policymakers will not avoid the confrontation
with people and the hard work to continuously survey their willings and interests. The
comparison between two case-studies located in different Italian regions (the Marches and Friuli
Venezia-Giulia) showed the essential role of local interests in the success/failure of implementing
the public interventions. The paper reports results of case-studies located in different sociogeographical
areas, the case of the ‘Verdicchio of Matelica Wine Road’ in the Marches, and the
case of the ‘Rural District Bassa Pianura Friulana’. The failure of a proposed rural policy depends
on local counteracting interests. Implementing the Future Rural Policy in a view of positive success
does necessitate the continual and fatiguing consultations with local communities
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
