With the technique of stream of conscience and internal monologue, the author expresses whatever he or she wants to say through the characters in his/her book. In expressions with such a technique, the reader comes to think that he or she is faced with a more convincing literary work, because the reader follows the characters without an intermediary help. The story writer enables the reader to ponder about the text, be busy with associations as well as to get involved in the process of the completion of the text. Such techniques of expression in which the story-teller plays very little intermediary role in expression and leave the reader all by himself aim to express much with few words. The reader tries to comprehend whatever the writer wishes to say from within a poetical expression. It becomes clear that such techniques are used to produce an expression made rich with symbols, images and associations. This article deals with what characteristics are provided by such techniques as the stream of conscience and internal monologue, techniques of expression, for the expression as well as with the reasons why the writer has chosen these techniques
Powerful knowledge? Challenging neoliberal trends in FE policy and practice
Much has been written about the “neoliberalization” of Further Education in response to announcements such as the development of technical “T-level” qualifications for FE. and “skills boot camps” with a £1.6 bn funding package for 2021-2025.
Recent research by Zahid Naz suggests that these trends are deepening, as a preoccupation with economic rationality impacts on education’s social value. A focus on educational practices per se is downplayed, critics argue, as the quest for compliance with commodified, marketized forms of training implies behaviouristic, repetitive approaches. Attention is also distracted from the complex socio-economic environments in which FE colleges, by definition, operate
The Benefits of Being Economics Professor A (and not Z)
Alphabetic name ordering on multi-authored academic papers, which is the convention in the economics discipline and various other disciplines, is to the advantage of people whose last name initials are placed early in the alphabet. As it turns out, Professor A, who has been a first author more often than Professor Z, will have published more articles and experienced afaster growth rate over the course of her career as a result of reputation and visibility. Moreover, authors know that name ordering matters and indeed take ordering seriously: Several characteristics of an author group composition determine the decision to deviate from the default alphabetic name order to a significant extent.performance measurement, incentives, economists, name ordering
Under pressure: inspection regimes and the institutionalisation of failure
Blog post about news that a group of teachers from Kent and Medway has written to Ofsted, the regulator for the education sector, follows the suicide of headteacher Ruth Perry, whose death in March 2023 has been linked to an impending Ofsted judgment.
Perry’s death has revived long-standing criticisms about how various parts of the education sector are regulated. Critics argue that that bodies such as Ofsted are not themselves as effective as we might like: in a recent article (Beighton and Naz, 2023) we discuss how inspections can, in Further Education contexts, be “gamed” by those involved. Often, our data suggests, inspections represent a chance to display artificial practices honed precisely in order to meet expectations while having little or no impact on the substance of the teaching and learning taking place
Final word on Jersey Dutch
In this article, William Z. Shetter compares and contrasts the dialects that developed between different Dutch colonies in the New World. He explores in-depth the nuances of Jersey Dutch, and provides theories to explain how Dutch and colonial languages blended. The article is reprinted from American Speech, December 1958, Volum XXXIII, No. 4
