Visceral Morphology of Redheads (Aythya americana) in Louisiana, Texas, and South Dakota dataset
This repository contains two files. Redhead_visceral_morphology_dataset.txt contains the raw lab data from visceral morphology measurements of redheads. Readme_2025 092325.txt contains the metadata explaining all the variables in the dataset and how they were calculated. We collected redheads (n = 872) from three locations over a three-year period, as follows: (1) Chandeleur Sound, Louisiana (n = 287, winter 1987-88, 1988-89); (2) Laguna Madre, Texas (n = 551, winter 1988-89, 1989-90); and (3) near Waubay, South Dakota (n = 34, spring 1990). We measured the mass of the esophagus, proventriculus, gizzard, intestines, ceca, liver, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys, the length of the intestines and ceca, and the distance from the ceca to the rectum. All were analyzed for differences due to sex, age, state, year, and time of year (season). In the upper gastrointestinal tract, Texas redheads had heavier esophagus and proventriculus mass, but Louisiana birds had heavier gizzards; all birds showed a general increase in gizzard mass from early to late winter. For the lower gastrointestinal tract, birds collected in Louisiana had consistently longer and heavier intestines and ceca than the Texas redheads, possibly to facilitate water reabsorption for osmoregulation, necessary because the Louisiana birds did not use a supplementary fresh water source for drinking like the Texas birds did. The mass of ceca and intestines generally decreased over the winter, especially in the Texas redheads, possibly because of their gradual acclimation to high salinities over that time period, and thus the reduced need for intestinal water reabsorption. Kidney mass in juveniles and pancreas mass in adults and juveniles showed a linear increase over the wintering period, whereas liver mass showed a decrease, in birds from Louisiana and Texas, perhaps due to variation in the rate of food consumption among groups. Adults generally had larger kidneys than juveniles, but only in early winter. We found no significant differences among treatment groups for spleen mass or ceca-to-rectal distance. We found that redheads collected in South Dakota had significantly heavier livers and kidneys than the wintering birds, but lighter gizzards; intestinal and cecal differences were generally inconsistent or absent. The shift from estuarine wintering habitat to inland freshwater wetlands in the spring likely contributed to the observed differences. We believe that variations in diet quality, salinity, and physiological demands account for most or all of the differences that we found between the different treatment groups.Michot, Thomas; Woodin, Marc; Nault, Andre; Skoruppa, Mary Kay. Warm Fuzzies: Boosting Staff Engagement with a Traveling Gopher
Poster presented at the 2018 Medical Library Association Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA.Objectives
An institution-wide employee engagement survey was conducted fall of 2014. One survey metric centered on gauging employee perception on how they were valued and acknowledged for their contributions to the organization. While the results were generally favorable, management decided this could be higher as staff recognition is core to employee engagement, satisfaction, retention, and ultimately patron satisfaction with the organization.
Methods
A staff recognition committee was put together to brain-storm ideas of how to recognize employee contributions that didn't involve the more standard recognition types like "employee of the month". One of the ideas that rose to the top was that of a "traveling award". The idea is for staff to present the traveling award to an individual from whom they received great service (to either patrons or a fellow staff member) or who made their job easier in one form or another. The traveling award is meant to be a peer-to-peer and the award nominator is encouraged to submit a brief description to the internal bi-weekly newsletter of who received the award and why. In addition, all persons receiving the traveling award have their names entered into a quarterly drawing to enjoy coffee or lunch with the library director.
Results
To make the traveling award more fun, a pair of stuffed institutional mascots was purchased (in case of one traveler going astray). The designated traveling award and its cousin were ready to start visiting staff in May of 2015 and proved to be a huge success. Since its roll-out, the traveling award has visited staff 28 times with accompanying write-ups posted in the library's bi-weekly emailed newsletter. Staffs has embraced the traveling awards and have used them to call out colleagues for a wide variety of reasons such as project leadership, administrative support, great customer service, or just "general awesomeness. "
Conclusions
Staff wants to be respected and valued for their contributions and respond to appreciation through recognition of their good work because it sends an extremely powerful message that their work is valued and that they are an important part of the organization. Staff that feels that their contributions are valued by their peers and the organization is more likely to have greater job satisfaction, work better together as teams and feel a sense of pride in the organization's goals and values.Chew, Katherine; Nault, Andre. Efficacy of antibiotic and non-antibiotic interventions in preventing and treating necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens: a protocol for a systematic review
Necrotic enteritis is one of the most common and economically important bacterial diseases affecting the broiler industry. Limitations on the use of antimicrobials have highlighted the need to evaluate the efficacy of non-antibiotic alternatives and management strategies. However, the available evidence on the efficacy of non-antibiotic interventions for necrotic enteritis has not been systematically synthesized. Here we present a protocol to conduct a systematic review of the literature to assess the efficacy of non-antibiotic interventions compared to antibiotic interventions in preventing and treating necrotic enteritis cases in broiler chickens.Bueno, Irene; Smith, Emily; Hwang, Haejin; Nault, Andre J.; Valeris-Chacin, Robert; Singer, Randall S.. Andre Gide and the Negro, 1940
Because it is generally known that Andre Gide is one of France's most influential contemporary writers, there is no need to justify a study based on his works. Desirous of obtaining the opinion of an influential white author concerning Negroid people and learning his activities in their behalf, the writer of this thesis undertook the study, Andre Gide end the Negro. The value of such a study to the American Negro lies primarily in (1) a better acquaintance with and appreciation for one whose interest in darker people has resulted in a tangible contribution; (2) a knowledge of the condition of a people, who, though distant in territory, are kindred in race, and (3) a challenge for scholastic accomplishment. The method of procedure was a careful analysis of Voyage au Congo and Retour du Tchad supplemented by collateral readings. To secure information concerning Mr. Gide's official investigation in 1938 of the natives' educational facilities in Senegal, a letter was sent him. Despite the anxiety which must be his because of the present war in which his country is involved, the eminent author found time to respond. His reply is quoted on page thirty-one of this study. Grateful acknowledgment is hereby given both Mr. Gide for his amicable letter and Professor Cook, who made such a contact possible. The various factors for the evolution of Gide's interest in Negroid people are shown in Chapter I. Chapter II contains a discussion of the colonial abuses existing in French Equatorial Africa exposed by Gide and his efforts to eradicate these. Through Chapter III one learns the author's personal impression of the morale and intelligence of Negroid people. In Chapter IV an interpretation of Gide's literary art in Voyage au Gang and Retour du Tchad is presented. The results are summarized in the conclusion
