Development of digital twin models supporting ambient assisted living
World population aging requires finding solutions to
improve independent living options. Ambient Assisted
Living (AAL) is making step forward developing services
supporting the elderly, but the implementation of
predictive environments is still far away.
Besides, the emerging Digital Twin (DT) concept has
begun to shape the first cognitive environments that
integrate users into assessments, improving efficiency,
prevention, and prediction of likely events through realtime
AI computing.
This paper aims to provide a prototype of a Cognitive
Building framework based on DT models that develop
high-level knowledge to achieve real-time Scenario
Awareness and offer appropriate AAL services once
anomalies are detected
Preliminary tests on a wireless sensor network for pervasive dust monitoring in construction sites
One of the critical aspects in health and safety is the control of fine particle emissions from demolition and construction activities. Such exposure is very often the cause of professional illnesses causing a relevant economic burden for welfare and insurance institutions, besides harming workers. Hence this paper performs a feasibility study of a realtime control system of fine particle concentration on construction sites. It was conceived as a ZigbeeTM based wireless, pervasive and non-invasive system, which is easy to deploy over the site and relatively cheap. Dust sensors were interfaced with the system and calibrated in the laboratory. The prototype is described in detail and tested under controlled and real conditions, in order to determine its potential for application. The prototype was shown to be an excellent tool to support health and safety inspectors, to provide in real-time a broad map of dust concentration over the whole extension of the site, provided that calibration coefficients are worked out for the various types of dust which can be encountered on the site
IL RUOLO DELLA VALIDAZIONE SULLA PREVENZIONE DEI CONTENZIOSI NELLE COSTRUZIONI CIVILI.
Si illustrano modalità per ridurre l’insorgere di contenziosi in appalti pubblici utilizzando lo strumento della validazione. La fase di verifica del progetto di opera pubblica permette un controllo preventivo durante il progetto, riducendone le criticità in fase di appalto e di ge-stione di possibili conflitti in corso d’opera. La completezza degli elaborati, la loro leggibi-lità, la loro congruenza interna e la loro inequivocabilità nelle prescrizioni rappresentano aspetti fondanti il buon esito del progetto e la sua affidabilità durante le fasi esecutive. Ana-loga attenzione è da riservarsi alle modalità con cui svolgere il confronto con lo staff pro-gettuale, al fine di non appesantire le tempistiche di sviluppo, minimizzando per quanto possibile la filiera dei controlli, per ridurre le intermediazioni nella comunicazione tra committenza, progettisti e validatori.
La validazione è altresì strumento per la stipula di contratto assicurativo con Polizza De-cennale Postuma Indennitaria a favore dell’ente pubblico sul buon esito e conservazione dell’opera. La validazione, intesa come Controllo Tecnico Preventivo, se effettuata in sede di progetto e in corso d’opera, è una risorsa di primaria importanza per la prevenzione dai vizi e difetti e la riduzione della conflittualità
Blockchain based choreographies: The construction industry case study
BPMN choreography is a modeling language capable to describe scenarios where several independent participants have to collaborate in a climate of opposing interests and therefore are forced to trust each other. For this reason, in many contexts, a strong need for transparency, responsibility, and choreography compliance arise by the various participants. Blockchains and smart contracts, thanks to their characteristic of providing a decentralized and consensus-based validation mechanism, seem to be able to meet these needs in an untrusted scenario. Nevertheless, most of the related work focused either on transparency, accountability, or compliance, but none on all three of them. Furthermore, such works do not take into account the nondeterministc nature of choreographies. This work aims at using blockchains and smart contracts in this scenario providing a formally well-defined set of tools to match all three the aforementioned requirements. This work applies the proposed techniques to a case study from the construction industry, an economical relevant application domain where the demand for transparency, accountability, and compliance with procurement contracts (that can be modeled as choreographies) is very strong
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
