Crystalline Nanorods as Possible Templates for the Synthesis of Amorphous Biosilica during Spicule Formation in Demospongiae

    No full text
High-resolution microscopy shows that during the initial stages of demosponge spicule formation, a primordial crystalline structure is formed within the axial filament. The recently developed electron diffraction tomography technique reveals that the nanorods have a layered structure that matches smectitic phyllosilicates. These intracellular nanorods have been considered as precursors of mature spicules. RI Kolb, Ute/A-2642-2011; Natalio, Filipe/D-4417-2011; Mugnaioli, Enrico/E-6237-201

Publication of the unedited Ms. Gr. Bibl. f. 4 (P) containing Ex. 9, I. 2. 6-8. 10. 11. 13. 14, with palaeographical commentary and discussion on its insertion in the Septuagint text history. The authors maintain that it belongs to a revision oi the Septuagint implying on one side an approach to the original hebrew and on the other side stylistic modifications. This revision could be parahexaplaric and perhaps prehexaplaric.Peer reviewe

Silicatein-mediated incorporation of titanium into spicules from the demosponge Suberites domuncula

Primmorphs (a three-dimensional sponge primary cell culture system) have been revealed to be a cell/tissue nano-factory for the production of tailor-made hybrid nanostructures. Growth of primmorphs is stimulated by the presence of a titanium alkoxide precursor tolerating titania (TiO(2)) concentrations up to 250 mu M. The presence and activity of silicatein in primmorphs has been analyzed by gel electrophoresis and Western blotting. Results of studies by scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy have revealed silica and titania to be co-localized on nanosized spicules. Our findings suggest that the incorporation of titania into the nanosized spicule is enzymatically mediated via active silicatein in an orchestrated mechanism. Paul E. Kahle y Federico Pérez Castro: los orígenes de la Escuela de Crítica Textual Bíblica de Madrid

[EN] We have frequently been asked about the origins of the Madrid School of Biblical Text Criticism. We have limited the content of this paper to Masoretic studies. Research into the files of the former Instituto Arias Montano of the CSIC disclosed a series of unedited letters between Professors Kahle and Pérez Castro; a paper by F. Pérez Castro and F. Cantera Burgos on “Prof. Paul E. Kahle y los estudios de crítica textual bíblica en España,” and a description by F. Pérez Castro of the first project to edit the Cairo Codex of the Prophets. Through these materials we can trace the main steps of the relationship between these two relevant scholars and the role that such a relationship played in the origin and late development of these studies in Madrid.[ES] Paul E. Hemos limitado el contenido de este artículo a los estudios masoréticos.

[EN] More than half a century ago P. Sainz Rodriguez alluded to the possible influence of Arias Mantano's De Arcano sermone on Fray Luis de León's De los Nombres de Cristo. Subsequently, F. Cantera and B. Rekers recognized said influence without adding new information in that respect. The present author analyses in detail both treatises and concludes that it is not possible to prove a literary dependency on Fray Luis's behalf regarding Arias Montano's work. Nevertheless, he sustains that one of the fundamental keys for understanding Fray Luis de León's treatise is the Christian Cabala which appeared among the Spanish converts in the 14th and 15th centuries and became very popular among the refined circles during the Renaissance. Fray Luis shares with many Hebrew scholars of the 16th century an idea of the Hebrew language and the names of God and techniques of exegesis which bring him nearer to the reasaning of the Christian cabalists. Peer reviewe

Enzyme-Mediated Deposition of a TiO2 Coating onto Biofunctionalized WS2 Chalcogenide Nanotubes

    No full text
A chemically specific and facile method for the biofunctionalization of WS2 nanotubes (NT-WS2) is reported. The covalent modification strategy is based on the affinity of the nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) side chain, which serves as a ligand for the surface binding to NT-WS2 and simultaneously as an anchor group for the binding of His-tagged proteins to the polymer backbone. The polymer functionalized WS2 nanotubes can be solubilized either in water or organic solvents; they are stable for at least one week. The probes were characterized by FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The immobilization of silicatein, a hydrolytic protein encountered in marine sponges, was visualized by scanning force microscopy (SFM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The formation of the biotitania coating mediated by the immobilized silicatein onto the surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
