    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Compact conformations of α-synuclein induced by alcohols and copper

    The intrinsically disordered protein α-synuclein aggregates into amyloid fibrils, a process known to be implicated in several neurodegenerative states. Partially folded forms of the protein are thought to trigger the aggregation process. Here, α-synuclein conformers are characterized by analysis of the charge-state distributions observed in electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry under negative-ion mode. It is found that, even at neutral pH, a small fraction of the molecular population is in a compact conformation. Several distinct partially folded forms are then identified under conditions that promote α-synuclein aggregation, such as solutions of simple and fluorinated alcohols. Specific intermediates accumulate at increasing concentrations of ethanol, hexafluoro-2-propanol, and trifluoroethanol. Finally, extensive folding induced by Cu(2+) binding is revealed by titrations in the presence of Cu(2+)-glycine. The data confirm the existence of a single, high-affinity binding site for Cu(2+). Because accumulation of this partially folded form correlates with enhancement of fibrillation kinetics, it is likely to represent an amyloidogenic intermediate in α-synuclein conformational transition

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Fatty acid metabolism in lambs fed hazelnut skin as a partial replacer of maize

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary inclusion of hazelnut skin (HS) on growth performances and fatty acid metabolism of lambs. Twenty-two lambs were assigned to 2 treatments and fed ad libitum for 56 days: a maize-barley based diet (CON group) or a diet containing 150 g/kg on a dry matter (DM) basis of HS to replace maize (HS group). After slaughter, samples of muscle, rumen and abomasum digesta were collected and analyzed for fatty acid composition. The dietary inclusion of HS did not affect the DM intake, final body weight, carcass weight and average daily gain (P > 0.05), whereas feed conversion ratio was increased by HS diet (P = 0.014). Ruminal fluid pH, ammonia and total volatile fatty acids were not affected by the dietary inclusion of HS (P > 0.05), while HS diet increased the molar proportion of butyrate and reduced the proportion of valerate (P < 0.05). Replacing 150 g/kg dry matter maize with HS increased the concentration of vaccenic acid in ruminal digesta, abomasum content and intramuscular fat (P < 0.01). Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of muscle were increased by hazelnut diet (P < 0.05). Although PUFA n-6/n-3 ratio was lower in the control treatment (P < 0.001), atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes were not affected by dietary treatment (P> 0.1). In conclusion, these results suggest that HS could replace 150 g/kg DM of maize without affecting animal performances and increasing the muscle concentration of PUFA and vaccenic acid

    In-depth characterization of the sarcoplasmic muscle proteome changes in lambs fed with hazelnut skin by-products: Relationships with meat color

    This study investigated the effect of agro-industrial hazelnut skin by-products supplementation on lamb meat color variation and the changes in the sarcoplasmic muscle proteome during post-mortem storage (0, 4 and 7 days). Gel-based proteomics and bioinformatics approaches were applied to better understand the potential role of feeding strategies in modulating the mechanisms underpinning meat discoloration and post-mortem changes during storage. Therefore, twenty-two Valle del Belice male lambs were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments: control (C), lambs fed with maize-barley diet, and hazelnut skin (H), lambs fed hazelnut skin byproduct as maize partial replacer in the concentrate diet. Hazelnut dietary treatment led to better lamb meat color stability as evidenced by the lowest decrease in redness and saturation index values. Proteomics and bioinformatics results revealed changes in the abundance of 41 proteoforms, which were mainly involved in glycolytic processes, responses to oxidative stress, and immune and endocrine system. The proteins allowed revealing interconnected pathways to be behind meat color variation as a consequence of using hazelnut skin byproducts to sustainable feed lamb. The proteins can be used as potential predictors of lamb meat color variation. Accordingly, the regression equations developed in this paper revealed triosephosphate isomerase (TPI1) as a reliable candidate biomarker of color stability in lamb meat. Significance: The use of agro-industrial by-products in animal feeding can be a potential sustainable strategy to reduce the environmental impacts of the food production chain and consequently improve animal welfare and product quality. The inclusion of hazelnut skin by-products in the animal's diet, due to the high concentration of polyphenols, represents an effective strategy to improve the oxidative stability of meat, with significant implications on color. The use of proteomics combined with bioinformatics on the sarcoplasmic proteome is a powerful approach to decipher the underlying mechanism. Accordingly, this approach allowed in this trial a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the post-mortem processes through the discovery of several biological pathways linked with lamb meat color variation. Glycolysis, followed by responses to oxidative stress, and other proteins involved in the immune and endocrine system were found as the major interconnected pathways that could act as potential predictors of lamb meat color stability. Candidate proteins biomarkers were further revealed in this study to be related with multiple meat color traits

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
