    No full text
Throughout the history of the tradition of Islamic studies, there have been various works of ‘ulum al-hadith that have been produced by hadith scholars. These works differ in their writing methodology from one work to another. To understand the differences, a study of each work and the background of the author is very necessary to be conducted to reveal and explain it. Thus, this study aims to introduce one of the figures in the discipline of ‘ulum al-hadith named Sheikh ‘Abd al-Hay al-Laknawi (d. 1304H) with a focus on one of his monumental works, namely Zafar al-Amani fi Sharh Mukhtasar al-Jurjani. This qualitative study uses content analysis methods to identify and comprehensively describe the methodology of al-Laknawi's writing in the work. From the results of the study it can be concluded that the methodology of writing al-Laknawi is seen as quite systematic and loaded with scientific discussions on issues that are quite complex in the science of hadith such as the issue of hadith hasan, the problem of doing good deeds with weak hadith, the issue of hadith mursal, issues munkar hadith and so on, along with his interpretation of the various views of the scholars presented. According to the research, this book of Zafar al-Amani is quite worthy to be placed in line with the great works of the discipline of ‘ulum al-hadith which should be studied and used as a reference by scholars and students.   &nbsp

GIS and geotechnical mapping of expansive soil in Toshka region

    No full text
AbstractThis paper presents the results of a subsurface site investigation that was performed to characterize different soil and rock formations along Sheikh Zayed canal with particular emphasis on the swelling characteristics of the clays in that area. Site-specific empirical correlations were developed to predict the clay swelling potential and pressure from simple and economic laboratory test results. The data were input into a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework to provide interactive maps that show the spatial distribution of the variables and identify their characteristics. These maps are then used to easily identify the values of swelling pressure/potential at various locations. This research provides a tool that is based on simple index tests that can be used to provide data that otherwise would require elaborate and costly investigations; the GIS framework allows storing, retrieving and updating these data easily to assist taking supported decisions dynamically

    No full text
In this study, surface roughness of three esthetic materials namely composite resin, resin-modified glass ionomer, and a compomer were examined using three finishing and polishing systems. Thirty samples of each material were prepared. Ten samples from each material were then finished and polished with one of the three systems (Sof-Lex discs, a combination of diamond and silicone points, and carbide finishing burs). Surface roughness (R ) of the samples after finishing and polishing were measured using a perthometer. The results showed that Sof-Lex discs and a combination of diamond and silicone points produced significantly better finished and polished surfaces on composite resin than on the other two materials. The roughest surfaces were obtained by carbide burs on glass ionomer (Photac-Fil). Although a combination of diamond and silicone points could provide acceptable finishing and polishing surfaces for composite resin and resin-modified glass ionomer surfaces, Sof-Lex discs provided smoother surfaces.Corresponding Author: Dr. Amani Al-Fawaz Department of Prosthetic Dental Sciences College of Dentistry, King Saud University P.O. This report is the output of the study which has been exploring ways in which the community based organizations can be used as instruments to alleviate poverty. The aim was to explore the extent to which the CBOs are practical, dynamic and potential actors in promoting desired socio-economic development activities in the struggle to alleviate poverty. Micro-credit, micro-financing and micro-enterprises are terms that have been used to describe and define the situation in which small loans are extended to people for the purposes of setting up small and usually self-employment projects that generate income. The research conducted aimed at examining micro-credit schemes as grassroots organizations, membership participation and accessibility, demand for credit and ways to increase lending portfolio through proposal preparations and their modus operand -which are inherent catalytic element to make them practical, dynamic, sustainable and potential in their activity sphere. The study has revealed that the credit facility is important in fostering small scale entrepreneurs to be more practical and proactive in delivering socio-economic activities. The role played by the CBO in creating entrepreneurial morale to small businesses in their locality is acknowledged. The CBO is ready to expand its services as acknowledged by demand of loans and readiness of members to access the loans. Borrowers are organized into groups and have showed their satisfaction with the current leadership. They have income generating activities, which reduce the risk of default. There are also effective mechanisms through which to disseminate valuable information on ways to improve relevant concerns of the members. Above all, the CBO has targeted one of the most vulnerable groups in society - women. By providing opportunities for self-employment, the micro credit programmes will significantly increase micro entrepreneurs' security, autonomy, self-confidence and status within the households. Challenges and Opportunities for Women’s Land Rights in Post- Conflict Northern Uganda

    No full text
Since the late 1980s to 2006, the northern region of Uganda underwent an armed conflict between the government of Uganda and the rebel group led by Joseph Kony. The conflict displaced virtually the entire population in the region, and by 1990 people were living in Internally Displaced peoples’ camps. As the war winds up, many people have left the camps returning to their former villages. The journey back home has not been easy, however. For women in particular, many are facing a lot of challenges especially related to access, ownership and use of land. Using data that was qualitatively gathered in two IDP camps in Gulu district, northern Uganda, the paper examines these challenges. It argues however that despite the challenges, opportunities do exist that can be exploited, if there is commitment by various stakeholders, to ensure that women access, own and use land in the return process.armed conflict, women, land rights, IDPs, reconstruction
