No News is Good News!

Global Challenges on the Welfare States: An Institutional Analysis

The objective of this study is to determine how the global crisis has affected welfare states. I inquired about how state intervention altered in Nordic welfare states in reaction to the global financial crisis of 2008, as well as the function of welfare components. To respond to the research topic, I used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. I utilized the data for developed economies of the OECD, beginning with cluster analysis to confirm and compare results; thereafter, I created two regression models reporting Pooled OLS and Fixed Effects models to expand the investigation. A welfare state is a multifaceted phenomenon, and it necessitates a range of techniques and methodologies. My study is based on the institutional analysis paradigm because it is a powerful tool for connecting disparate features to comprehend multifaceted, complicated concepts such as welfare states. To conduct this research, it is necessary to understand the challenges that welfare states faced and how they dealt with them, as well as how welfare states might respond if the global economy faces a similar situation in the future and how lessons learned in the past can be applied and more efficient policies implemented to reduce risks. A detailed and theoretically grounded investigation can also help to close a gap in the literature

Bc. Narmin Ismiyeva Diplomová práce Forking the Path: A Study of Hypertext/Rozvětvené cestičky: Studie hypertextu Vedoucí práce: Louis Armand, Ph.D. Narmin Ismiyeva Diplomová práce Forking the Path: A Study of Hypertext/Rozvětvené cestičky: Studie hypertextu Vedoucí práce: Louis Armand, Ph.D. Praha 2022 Abstract The aim of the present thesis is to critically engage with the concept of hypertext and to outline various approaches to it. Hypertext will first be interpreted theoretically and will engage with the philosophical notions of logocentrism. It will be viewed as a process of non-sequential writing that is characteristic not only for electronic literatures but for writing in general. Second, hypertext will be approached as a system that allows one to create, read, perceive, store, and utilize information in a particular way. This system makes the patterns of non-sequentiality inherent in writing visible. Third, hypertext will be viewed as a technique, the implementation of which will be analyzed in relation to the concepts of the performativity of art and language. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Female crickets reared in silence exhibit risk-sensitive behavior in response to the preferred song

University of Minnesota M.S. thesis. December 2018. Major: Ecology, Evolution and Behavior. Advisor: Marlene Zuk. 1 computer file (PDF); vi, 26 pages.Female choice is influenced by many environmental cues that get experienced during different stages of female development. Cues experienced in juvenile stage may have larger impact on female mate choice than mating decisions in response to cues experienced during adult mate choice. To examine how juvenile acoustic rearing interacts with immediate perception of risk in shaping female mate preference, we used the system of Pacific field cricket (Teleogryllus oceanicus). Females raised in silence were predicted to be more responsive under conditions associated with low risk without discriminating across song models. Females raised in the presence of song were expected to exhibit preference for a song model under conditions associated with low risk. Our results showed no interaction for females raised in the presence of song; females raised in silence exhibited preference for a song model under conditions associated with risk.Ghalichi, Narmin.
