Adverse events during antidepressant treatment : prescription event monitoring studies with mirtazapine and paroxetine in general medical practice in England
No full textThe research described within this thesis aimed to evaluate the profile of adverse events during treatment with the antidepressant mirtazapine in general medical practice in England. The method employed was Prescription Event Monitoring (PEM), which is non-interventional, and provides ‘real world’ clinical data: patients included within this method are considered more representative of the wider population exposed to the drug, than patient samples included within clinical trial databases. Using the Drug Safety Research Unit PEM database, events reported during treatment with mirtazapine were analysed and compared with events reported with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paroxetine. Incidence densities (IDs) for reported events were calculated, during the first month of treatment (ID1) and during months two to six (ID2) for mirtazapine and paroxetine, The profile of reported adverse events was compared to the description within the Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) for mirtazapine and previously unrecognised events are described. The most frequently reported suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were ‘unspecified’ side effects (n=177), drowsiness/sedation (116) and malaise/lassitude (71). Events with highest incidence density in the first month (ID1 per 1000 patient-months treatment) were: drowsiness/sedation (58.1), malaise/lassitude (27.8) and dizziness (15.6). The most frequently reported events for stopping mirtazapine were: not effective (2432), drowsiness/sedation (800) and weight gain (362). Adverse events possibly due to mirtazapine but not included within the SPC were agitation (73), aggression (70), dizziness (122), rash (20), hallucinations (13), abnormal dreams (31), oedema (30), palpitations (10) and tremor (14).</p
Implicancia del selenio, órganico e inorgánico, en la composición de los ácidos grasos y en la resistencia a la oxidación del músculo longissimus dorsi del cerdo Pampa Rocha
No full textEl cerdo Pampa Rocha (PR) es un recurso criollo, adaptado al biotopo de nuestro país. En la búsqueda de la obtención de un producto diferencial por su sistema de origen y a la vez funcional por sus aportes nutricionales, se estudió el efecto de la suplementación con selenio (Se) en dietas de cerdos PR criados al aire libre y alimentados con base en granos y pasturas durante los 90 a 180 días, sobre la composición de ácidos grasos (AG) y la resistencia a la oxidación. La suplementación se realizó con Se orgánico e inorgánico (3 ppm). Se estudió el efecto en el músculo longissimus dorsi (LD) fresco y conservado. La carne de cerdo PR fue enriquecida con Se inorgánico (SI). En la fracción de AG totales, el SI favoreció el contenido de C14:0 y C16:0 (AG aterogénicos) en el músculo conservado y aumentó la proporción de C16:1 en el músculo fresco y conservado. El proceso (fresco-conservado) afectó al contenido de algunos AG: el contenido de C14:0, C16:0 y C18:2n-6 aumentó y el de C18:2n-6 disminuyó en el músculo conservado. Se encontró una mayor proporción de C14:0, C18:1 y C22:4n-6 en la fracción polar en el músculo conservado y una mayor proporción de C18:2n-6 en el fresco. El índice aterogénico en las muestras conservadas de los animales suplementados con SI fue mayor con respecto al resto de las dietas y la relación n6/n3 fue mayor en el LD conservado. La oxidación lipídica fue mayor en las muestras conservadas (p < 0,0001) para todas las dietas, aun así estos valores fueron muy bajos. Las pasturas aportan cierta cantidad de Se, lo que podría estar enmascarando el efecto observado en otros estudios de este mineral sobre la composición de AG de la carne, así como el efecto antioxidante, para poder afirmarlo se necesita continuar con la investigación. La suplementación con Se inorgánico en estos animales bajo estas condiciones alimenticias enriquece la carne de cerdo PR con Se y aumenta el contenido de AG C16:1 (AG vinculado con la prevención de la obesidad), por lo que esta intervención alimenticia podría ser el camino para la obtención de un producto diferenciado y funcional que atienda posibles mercados emergentes

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
