HARMONIZING SOUND AND SCRIPT: INTEGRATING PHONETIC SYMBOLS WITHIN THE LEXICAL APPROACH TO IMPROVE EFL LISTENING SKILL
Phonetic symbols play a crucial role in linguistics by providing a systematic means to represent the phonological attributes of words, encompassing both pronunciation and orthographic manifestations. Their primary function is to enhance the identification and comprehension of words in spoken and written language contexts. In the realm of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), this study explores the utilization of phonetic symbols to enhance students’ clarity and understanding when engaging with the English lexicon. This application is integrated into the framework of the lexical approach, a pedagogical paradigm that underscores the significance of mastering vocabulary and language components such as collocations, phrases, and idiomatic expressions. The participants were 46 students enrolled in phonetics and phonology courses at the English Language Education Department, Bandar Lampung University, Indonesia. The research design follows a classroom action research model, aiming to enhance students’ listening skills through the strategic incorporation of phonetic symbols within the lexical approach framework. Based on observations and assessments, the study reveals that proficiency in recognizing and differentiating phonetic symbols contributes to students’ comprehension of words embedded in spoken texts. Furthermore, the results from the testing phase indicate that 36 out of 46 students achieved a passing score of 75 or higher, reflecting a success rate of 78%. This achievement aligns with the predetermined research success criteria, highlighting the positive impact of incorporating phonetic symbols within the lexical approach for improving students’ language skills. The implications suggest that incorporating phonetic symbols within the lexical approach framework can serve as a valuable pedagogical strategy for educators aiming to enhance students listening skills and overall language proficiency in an EFL context
Predicting the classification of high vowel sound by using artificial neural network: a study in forensic linguistics
One of the tasks in forensic linguistics, especially forensic phonetics, is evaluating the speech sounds in the recordings. The speech evaluation aims at identifying and verifying speakers to predict if the sound were spoken by the suspect or not. The common problem in the task is determining which acoustic features of the speech sounds are reliable for the speaker identification and verification. The purpose of this research is studying formant frequencies to predict high vowel sounds /i/, and /u/ by using artificial neural network (ANN). Using three various normalization methods (i.e., softmax, z-score and sigmoid), we utilized multilayer perceptron on backpropagation ANN with the architectural models of 4-5-2, 4-10-2 and 4-20-2. The results show that the z-score normalization method provides higher accuracy than the other two in all formations and the 4-10-2 formation has shown the highest accuracy (92.26%)
Investigating Vocabulary Proficiency in Argumentative Text Comprehension Among Senior High School Students
This study aims to investigate the level of students' vocabulary mastery in comprehending argumentative texts at SMA Persada, Bandar Lampung. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed, involving 41 students as the sample. Data were collected using student worksheets as the primary research instrument. The collected data were analyzed using a one-sample t-test to determine the students' vocabulary proficiency. The findings revealed that students demonstrated good vocabulary mastery in understanding argumentative texts, with a mean score of 80.72. Furthermore, the statistical analysis indicated a highly significant result, with both the one-tailed and two-tailed p-values being less than .001. These findings imply that while students possess an adequate vocabulary foundation for engaging with argumentative texts, continued emphasis on vocabulary development remains essential for deeper critical reading and writing skills. Educators should consider integrating context-based vocabulary instruction within argumentative reading
Teaching and Learning English for Visually Impaired Students: An Ethnographic Case Study
In this article we report an ethnographic case study of observing the teaching and learning of English at a school for visually impaired students in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Data collection included student and teacher interviews. It also covered class observation and used a social constructivist framework of disability. The study revealed that the students received inadequate
modifications of instruction in foreign language learning. However, the students used a variety of resources with the screen reader technology such as Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) and Job Access with Speech (JAWS). These findings suggest that visually impaired students actually can have unique ways of learning foreign language supported by the assistive technology. These
abilities should be acknowledged to obtain the perspectives of students who receive disability specific education. Moreover, the study might provide a further facet to the research especially on the importance of learning strategies in special education

THE EMERGENCE OF CYBER LITERATURE: A CHALLENGE TO TEACH LITERATURE FROM TEXT TO HYPERTEXT
In a digital era, people live in a cyberspace that they become part of modern society. The information that they have acquired is from the World Wide Web (WWW). This WWW has become an important medium for people in the world to disseminate information. Because of the technology of Web, cyber literature emerges. This study talks about the emergence of cyber literature which changes the way of reading and teaching in various institutions. It becomes a challenge for people who teach literature because they should leave the printed text and move to the digital text as called hypertext. The existence of cyber literature also drives them change their style to analyze and criticize the work of literature. So, it becomes a challenge for them to teach literature from text to hypertext
Analyzing the Student’s Phonological Awareness and its Relation to the Reading Skill in EFL Classroom
Phonological awareness has been claimed as one of the significant factors in learning to read. This paper reported our research on students\u27 phonological awareness in EFL classrooms. We wanted to examine whether the phonological awareness tasks correlate with reading accuracy. Firstly, we analyzed their phonological awareness in the tasks of identification, substitution, addition, and deletion in English phonemes and syllables. Then, we discussed the relationship between phonological awareness and reading skills. We observed the students (N=143) of the even semesters (II, IV, VI, and VIII) at the English Education Department (Academic Year 2021/2022), Universitas Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. From the complete task of knowing students\u27 phonological awareness that has been carried out, there was an increase in the average score from Semester II to Semester VIII students. The highest mean score was found in the student\u27s test scores of Semester VIII (91.2; SD 6.3) and the lowest for Semester II students (62.5; SD 11.4). To test whether the phonological awareness tasks correlated with reading accuracy, the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r) was calculated, and the results showed that the reading accuracy had a positive correlation either for the phoneme (r = 0.472) and syllable (r = 0.534) tasks and the correlation was significant (p < .01)
Enhancing English Vocabulary Learning for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder through the Learn English for Kids Application
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior, often making language learning more challenging. As a result, language teaching programs for students with autism must be designed differently from those created for typically developing learners. Most autistic learners are visual thinkers who acquire knowledge more effectively through images and visual aids. To support this need, an application called Learn English for Kids was developed to help children with autism learn English vocabulary. This study examines the use of the Learn English for Kids application as a tool for teaching English vocabulary to students with ASD. A qualitative descriptive method was employed at SLB Yamet School Cendana Lampung, involving five male students diagnosed with autism. The findings indicate that integrating visual and auditory features within the application creates a stimulating and supportive learning environment that aligns with the learning characteristics of children with autism. The use of reinforcement enhances engagement and comprehension, although challenges such as limited attention span and mood fluctuations persist. Combining digital media with behavioral strategies offers an effective framework for inclusive language instruction
