A novel approach to measure brain-to-brain spatial and temporal alignment during positive empathy
Toppi J, Siniatchkin M, Vogel P, Freitag CM, Astolfi L, Ciaramidaro A. A novel approach to measure brain-to-brain spatial and temporal alignment during positive empathy. Scientific reports. 2022;12(1): 17282.Empathy is defined as the ability to vicariously experience others' suffering (vicarious pain) or feeling their joy (vicarious reward). While most neuroimaging studies have focused on vicarious pain and describe similar neural responses during the observed and the personal negative affective involvement, only initial evidence has been reported for the neural responses to others' rewards and positive empathy. Here, we propose a novel approach, based on the simultaneous recording of multi-subject EEG signals and exploiting the wavelet coherence decomposition to measure the temporal alignment between ERPs in a dyad of interacting subjects. We used the Third-Party Punishment (TPP) paradigm to elicit the personal and vicarious experiences. During a positive experience, we observed the simultaneous presence in both agents of the Late Positive Potential (LPP), an ERP component related to emotion processing, as well as the existence of an inter-subject ERPs synchronization in the related time window. Moreover, the amplitude of the LPP synchronization was modulated by the presence of a human-agent. Finally, the localized brain circuits subtending the ERP-synchronization correspond to key-regions of personal and vicarious reward. Our findings suggest that the temporal and spatial ERPs alignment might be a novel and direct proxy measure of empathy. © 2022. The Author(s)

Weber,
Adorno, Horkheiner, Foucault, Derrida, Lyotard, Marx, Lenin, Stalin e
tantos outros. A Teoria da Modernidade quer aprender das
falácias, aporias e impasses destes clássicos do

soluções para vencer as patologias dos tempos
modernos.
Habermas and the Theory
of Modernity
Barbara Freitag
The present article tries to separate from the vast work of
Jürgen
Habermas his Theory of Modernity, immersed within a mass of
publications but never developed explicitly by the author himself in a
synthetic text. It is through the critical analysis of sociological,
philosophical, aesthetic and Marxist discourses on modernity that
Habermas suggests a Theory which surpasses the theoretical and
practical impasses to which the works of Weber, Adorno, Horkheimer,
Foucault, Derrida, Lyotard, Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and many others lead
us. The Theory of Modernity intends to learn from the fallaciousness,
aporia, and impasses of these classic works of thought, proposing,
thanks to this, new solutions to overcome the pathologies of the modern
age.

Galectins in angiogenesis: Consequences for gestation
Members of the galectin family have been shown to exert several roles in the context of reproduction. They contribute to placentation, maternal immune regulation and facilitate angiogenesis encompassing decidualisation and placenta formation during pregnancy. In the context of neo-vascularisation, galectins have been shown to augment signalling pathways that lead to endothelial cell activation, cell proliferation, migration and tube formation in vitro in addition to angiogenesis in vivo. Angiogenesis during gestation ensures not only proper foetal growth and development, but also maternal health. Consequently, restriction of placental blood flow has major consequences for both foetus and mother, leading to pregnancy diseases. In this review we summarise both the established and the emerging roles of galectin in angiogenesis and discuss the possible implications during healthy and pathological gestation.Fil: Blois, Sandra M.. Cucurbit[7]uril host-vologen guest complexes: electrochromic and photochemical properties
In this thesis, we demonstrated that a molecular host, cucurbit[7]uril, provides an
alternative method of adsorbing molecules on semiconductors and shields the guest from
the hetereogenous interface. These novel hybrid systems exhibited photophysical and
electrochemical properties that differ from the properties of layers obtained by directly
attaching the chromophore to the semiconductor through binding groups. This thesis describes the host-guest chemistry between cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and
various series of viologen guests. Methylviologen (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride, MV2+), 1-methyl-1'-p-tolyl-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride (MTV2+), and 1,1'-dip-tolyl-(4,4'-bipyridine)-1,1'-diium dichloride (DTV2+) were encapsulated in the macrocyclic host cucurbit[7]uril, CB[7]. The complexes MV2+@CB[7] and MTV2+@CB[7] were physisorbed to the surface of
TiO2 nanoparticle films. The complexation into CB[7] was monitored by 1H NMR. TiO2 films functionalized with the complexes were studied by FT-IR-ATR and UV-Vis absorption. The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of MV2+@CB[7]
and MTV2+@CB[7] were studied in solution and in electrochromic windows (ECDs),
where the complexes were bound to TiO2 films cast on FTO. The ECDs prepared from MV2+@CB[7]/TiO2/FTO and MTV2+@CB[7]/TiO2/FTO electrodes showed reversible, sharp and fast color switching upon application of -0.8 V. Viologen derivative DTV2+ exhibited enhanced fluorescence upon encapsulation.
Aqueous solutions of DTV2+ were weakly fluorescent (Φ = 0.02, τ < 20 ps), whereas the
emission of the DTV2+@2CB[7] complex was enhanced by one order of magnitude (Φ =
0.29, τ = 0.7 ns) and was blue-shifted by 35 nm. DTV2+ in polymethylmethacrylate
(PMMA) matrix was fluorescent with a spectrum similar to that observed for the complex
in solution. DFT and CIS calculations suggested that the increased planarity of the
aromatic rings and a quinonoid structure of the S1 state, induced by encapsulation in the
host, can explain the observed emission enhancement. The absorption and emission
spectra of DTV2+@2CB[7] in water exhibited a large Stokes shift (ΔSt ~ 10,000 cm-1) and no fine structure. 1H NMR and UV-Vis titration indicated that the DTV2+@2CB[7] complex is formed in aqueous solutions with a complexation constant of K1W = 1.2×104 M-1, K2W = 1.0×104 M-1 in water, and K1NaCl = 1.1×104 M-1, K2NaCl = 0.8×104 M-1in 0.05 M

Monitoramento e identidade linguística : um estudo de palavrões em duas versões de uma obra literária itabaianense
Swear words are linguistic marks that are subject to strong social stigma. We know that the
same speaker monitors his linguistic uses depending on his interlocutor (BELL, 1984), and in
our study, we sought to understand how this linguistic monitoring takes place, by an author, in
relation to the use of profanity to build personas in his work. In “Feijão de Cego”, by Vladimir
Souza Carvalho, from Sergipe, born in Itabaiana, judge, historian, poet, folklorist and writer,
profanity is a frequent linguistic feature. In this way, we seek to observe the linguistic
monitoring in a literary work, and how the author manipulates linguistic marks that are the
target of strong social stigma, in order to answer the following question: What are the effects
of linguistic monitoring in the use of profanity for the construction of identities and social
personas in “Feijão de Cego”? For this research, in addition to the published and single-edition
version, we had access to the handwritten version, granted by the author, which allowed us to
observe the linguistic monitoring based on the comparison of the profanity present in the two
versions of the work, following the criterion of frequency , and the correlation of such linguistic
marks to the social aspects evidenced by the literary text. This study is of a qualitative and
quantitative nature and is in line with the perspective of sociolinguistic analysis, more
specifically in studies that observe style as a social construction, and focuses on the concepts
of Eckert (1992, 2008, 2012), who proposes the style of the persona as the most expressive
factor to understand the meaning of variation and communities of practice as a starting point
for the analysis of stylistic variation. Since the personas in “Feijão de Cego” are built through
the perspective of an author from Itabaiana and there are eleven stories whose narrative space
is located in the city of Itabaiana-SE, in addition to having access to studies that deal with
typical profanity associated with the repertoire of this community (FREITAG, SANTOS,
SANTOS, 2009; SOARES, 2011) and socially constructed images of Itabaiana and its residents
(MENEZES, W.O., 2010; SANTANA, MARIANO, 2013; MENESES, 2015; CUNHA,
MARIANO, 2017; MENEZES, 2018), we took Itabaiana as a starting point and sought to
identify whether there are specific lexicon and social images that characterize the Itabaiana
personas of the work to the detriment of the other tales, located in other Sergipe cities. The
results point to the construction of a sergipe identity, mainly from the countryside, in the studied
work, with no specific social or linguistic aspects that differentiate the tales from itabaiana from
the others. In the published version of the work, compared to the handwritten version, there is
an attenuation of this local identity through a significant decrease in the frequency of more
regional profanity, such as “peste” and “cabrunco”. In addition, the reduction and/or removal
of heavier swear words, such as “puta”, replacing them with less stigmatized terms (“safada”,
“cachorra”), demonstrates the effects of linguistic monitoring that act not only in speech, but
also in literary writing.
2010; SANTANA, MARIANO, 2013; MENESES, 2015; CUNHA, MARIANO, 2017;
