Longitudinal Analysis of a Diversity Support Program in Biology: A National Call for Further Assessment

    No full text
© The Author(s) 2017. National calls to improve the performance and persistence of students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in science have led to a surge of research on inclusive, evidence-based teaching methods. Less work has revealed the effects of diversity support initiatives that improve campus climate and community cohesion. Here, we examine whether participation in the Biology Scholars Program (BSP) at Cornell University-a diversity support program at a prominent university-affects underrepresented racial minority (URM) student performance. We found that BSP participants are less academically prepared when they enter college but typically have GPAs similar to those of their non-BSP counterparts at graduation, thereby closing achievement gaps. Although the BSP appears to help URM students, we cannot assert that the BSP alone is responsible for these effects; future work should isolate effective strategies that contribute to student success. In response to these results, we lay out strategies that support programs could implement to maximize positive impacts

The dissertation documents the oeuvre of an outstanding personality of the entertainment culture in the 20th century, who was equally successful as both a composer and an author of revues and operettas, chansons and cabaret programmes. Hugo Wiener (1904 – 1993) was born as the son of a musical middle-class family in Vienna. Before the end of schooling he was additionally educated in composing and conducting. Until 1938 Hugo Wiener became an established name in Vienna’s cultural life. He became famous as an author of revues and a librettist of various operettas. When the National Socialists seized power he had to go into a ten-year-exile to South America. In 1948 he returned to Vienna for the first time, where he finally settled down with his wife Cissy in 1954. The present paper is not meant to be a biography. It rather aims at documenting the main stages of his life and analysing his comprehensive and multi-faceted work. To date, there is no scientific research paper about Hugo Wiener. Sources are to be found in a fairly wide area of locations. Fortunately, his estate, which belongs to his widow Cissy Kraner, could be accessed, even though there is a wide lack of material because of the prevailing circumstances. Moreover, the work is based on a comprehensive study of archival and literary material. The analysis of Hugo Wiener’s work at the theatres „Hölle” and „Femina” closes a gap in Austrian theatre history. In addition, some new results relating to Cissy Kraner”s engagements at the cabaret „ABC” have been found. The description of Wiener’s and Kraner’s exile in Columbia and Venezuela represents a contribution to exile research. It demonstrates a felicitous re-start in a foreign culture followed by a successful career in a foreign language. As from 1948 the married couple returned to Vienna by stages, where it finally settled in 1954. Although Wiener could reintegrate into Vienna’s cultural landscape he had to find another field of activity, because the sort of revues he wrote before 1938 no longer existed. Now the cooperation with Cissy Kraner, who could be compared in her profession as a diseuse with international stars such as Blandine Ebinger and Marlene Dietrich, came to the fore. From that time on Wiener used his talent as a writer of „light” revues and as a poet and composer of chansons for his wife Cissy Kraner

Molecule-specific diagnosis of diseased tissues via optical fiber guided Raman spectroscopy

The purpose of this research is to characterize the molecular origin of the Raman peaks associated with the diseased tissues, and to explore the feasibility in obtaining Raman spectra via different optical settings. The goal is to develop a Raman-based optical sensor for clinical and biomedical applications. Diseased tissues studied by the author were calcified human coronary artery and human gallstones. The Raman peaks associated with the calcification of human artery was identified by comparing the Raman spectrum of healthy human coronary artery with that of the calcified human coronary artery. The chemical origin of the Raman peaks characteristic to calcification was identified by comparing with the Raman spectra of model chemical compounds. The major marker for calcification is the Raman peak at 960 cm-1 which is attributed to the symmetric stretching of PO43- group of precipitation in the calcified tissue. The major chemical components of different gallstones were identified by comparing the Raman spectra of gallstones with that of selected model compounds. The major chemical components of three gallstones were cholesterol bilirubin, and fatty acid salts, respectively.Raman spectra of the aforementioned diseased tissues were taken via the macro-sampling with a standard setting of a Raman spectrometer, referred as the macro setting in this thesis. Then the Raman spectra were taken via microsampling through a microscope coupled to a Raman spectrometer, referred as the microscope setting. Finally, the Raman spectra were collected via an optical fiber coupled to a Raman spectrometer, referred as the optical fiber setting. It was demonstrated in this thesis that Raman spectroscopy can provide molecule-specific identification of calcified human coronary artery and gallstones. The feasibility in obtaining Raman spectra of the diseased tissues via the macro setting, the microscope setting and the optical fiber setting is also demonstrated. The success in obtaining Raman spectra via different optical settings is a major step towards the development of a clinically-oriented Raman-based optical sensor for the purpose of the diagnosis of diseased tissues.</p

Indonesia is ranked third in animal ownership in Asia, with almost 50% of the Indonesian population owning pets. However, with many levels of pet ownership, there are still several problems, including animal owners who do not know how to care for animals properly, the adoption process is still manual, which makes it challenging to find pets for adoption or release pets in finding trusted animal owners. The emergence of empathy for animal lovers but have limited distance in helping abandoned animals, and need convenience in purchasing animal needs. Based on the above problems, the author created an innovative solution to helping animal and pet owners entitled “Innovation of an Animal Lovers Platform with a Mission to Enhance Animal Welfare Through the Eidos Website” by developing a platform so that the community, especially animal lovers, can adopt, donate, discuss, find the nearest animal service location, read information about pets, as well as buying pet necessities. The development of this website is carried out using the waterfall method. After the product development, implementation is carried out directly through socialization with animal lovers. The results of socialization showed a positive response, were able to meet their needs, and, per Eidos's expectations, animal lovers can help other pets and care for them easily, quickly, and safely

Angiotensin II induces soluble fms-Like tyrosine kinase-1 release via calcineurin signaling pathway in pregnancy

    No full text
Maternal endothelial dysfunction in preeclampsia is associated with increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), a circulating antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor. Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a potent vasoconstrictor that increases concomitant with sFlt-1 during pregnancy. Therefore, we speculated that Ang II may promote the expression of sFlt-1 in pregnancy. Here we report that infusion of Ang II significantly increases circulating levels of sFlt-1 in pregnant mice, thereby demonstrating that Ang II is a regulator of sFlt-1 secretion in vivo. Furthermore, Ang II stimulated sFlt-1 production in a dose- and time-dependent manner from human villous explants and cultured trophoblasts but not from endothelial cells, suggesting that trophoblasts are the primary source of sFlt-1 during pregnancy. As expected, Ang II-induced sFlt-1 secretion resulted in the inhibition of endothelial cell migration and in vitro tube formation. In vitro and in vivo studies with losartan, small interfering RNA specific for calcineurin and FK506 demonstrated that Ang II-mediated sFlt-1 release was via Ang II type 1 receptor activation and calcineurin signaling, respectively. These findings reveal a previously unrecognized regulatory role for Ang II on sFlt-1 expression in murine and human pregnancy and suggest that elevated sFlt-1 levels in preeclampsia may be caused by a dysregulation of the local renin/angiotensin system

Voices of inheritance : aspects of British film and television in the 1980s and 1990s

    No full text
During the 1990s the notion of the heritage film has become a taken for granted category of British cinema. Rather than dispute the merits of particular films that lie within this genre I question the construction of the relation between the idea of heritage and contemporary British film and television. Using the critical literature established by the contending cultural histories that address the rise of heritage in British culture, I highlight other, frequently personal and national engagements with inherited pasts. The concentration upon inheritance lends a greater emphasis to what is passed on from the past and endures in the present. The modes of articulating these inherited pasts are formally distinctive and constructed out of the vocabulary of documentary and fiction. The corpus of texts begins with the apparently radical avant garde film-making of Derek Jannan and moves through the work of the Black Audio Film Collective to the apparently conservative television documentaries of Alan Bennett. These key voices are then situated in relation to the hegemonic definition of heritage and current debates concerning British film and television. The persisting opposition which defined British cinema during the 1980s posits an unofficial cinema characterized by dissent and urban decay against an official cinema represented by the heritage film. My corpus of texts challenges this opposition. The different engagements with inherited pasts take place from different speaking positions and represent a diminishing publicly funded tradition of film and television production. The range of positions from margins to centre reveal that there was a contestation of the cultural sources which are aggregated into the construction of heritage during the 1980s and 1990s
