    Fake News, Disinformation, Propaganda, and Media Bias

    The rise of Internet and social media changed not only how we consume information, but it also democratized the process of content creation and dissemination, thus making it easily available to anybody. Despite the hugely positive impact, this situation has the downside that the public was left unprotected against biased, deceptive, and disinformative content, which could now travel online at breaking-news speed and allegedly influence major events such as political elections, or disturb the efforts of governments and health officials to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The research community responded to the issue, proposing a number of inter-connected research directions such as fact-checking, disinformation, misinformation, fake news, propaganda, and media bias detection. Below, we cover the mainstream research, and we also pay attention to less popular, but emerging research directions, such as propaganda detection, check-worthiness estimation, detecting previously fact-checked claims, and multimodality, which are of interest to human fact-checkers and journalists. We further cover relevant topics such as stance detection, source reliability estimation, detection of persuasion techniques in text and memes, and detecting malicious users in social media. Moreover, we discuss large-scale pre-trained language models, and the challenges and opportunities they offer for generating and for defending against neural fake news. Finally, we explore some recent efforts aiming at flattening the curve of the COVID-19 infodemic

    Social media have democratized content creation and have made it easy for anybody to spread information online. However, stripping traditional media from their gate-keeping role has left the public unprotected against biased, deceptive and disinformative content, which could now travel online at breaking-news speed and influence major public events. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new blending of medical and political disinformation has given rise to the first global infodemic. We offer an overview of the emerging and inter-connected research areas of fact-checking, disinformation, "fake news'', propaganda, and media bias detection. We explore the general fact-checking pipeline and important elements thereof such as check-worthiness estimation, spotting previously fact-checked claims, stance detection, source reliability estimation, detection of persuasion techniques, and detecting malicious users in social media. We also cover large-scale pre-trained language models, and the challenges and opportunities they offer for generating and for defending against neural fake news.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Proppy: Organizing the news based on their propagandistic content

    Propaganda is a mechanism to influence public opinion, which is inherently present in extremely biased and fake news. Here, we propose a model to automatically assess the level of propagandistic content in an article based on different representations, from writing style and readability level to the presence of certain keywords. We experiment thoroughly with different variations of such a model on a new publicly available corpus, and we show that character n-grams and other style features outperform existing alternatives to identify propaganda based on word n-grams. Unlike previous work, we make sure that the test data comes from news sources that were unseen on training, thus penalizing learning algorithms that model the news sources used at training time as opposed to solving the actual task. We integrate our supervised model in a public website, which organizes recent articles covering the same event on the basis of their propagandistic contents. This allows users to quickly explore different perspectives of the same story, and it also enables investigative journalists to dig further into how different media use stories and propaganda to pursue their agenda

    Dense vs. Sparse representations for news stream clustering

    The abundance of news being generated on a daily basis has made it hard, if not impossible, to monitor all news developments. Thus, there is an increasing need for accurate tools that can organize the news for easier exploration. Typically, this means clustering the news stream, and then connecting the clusters into story lines. Here, we focus on the clustering step, using a local topic graph and a community detection algorithm. Traditionally, news clustering was done using sparse vector representations with TF–IDF weighting, but more recently dense representations have emerged as a popular alternative. Here, we compare these two representations, as well as combinations thereof. The evaluation results on a standard dataset show a sizeable improvement over the state of the art both for the standard F1 as well as for a BCubed version thereof, which we argue is more suitable for the task
