The development and evaluation of virtual reality-based training on performance and rehabilitation outcomes
Sports injuries are types of injuries that usually occur during sports, training, or exercise. Sports injuries often result from poor training methods, inappropriate equipment, lack of fitness, insufficient warm-up, and trauma (Salerno, 2009). Knee injuries are considered one of the most common injuries in athletes and include a large part of the cost of medical care for sports injuries (Loes et al., 2000; Sancheti et al., 2010). The ACL is the most common knee ligament injury in rugby, soccer, ski, volleyball, gymnastics, and basketball players due to quick deceleration movements such as landing, pivoting, cutting, and changing direction in these sports. Despite increased knowledge of ACL injury mechanisms, rehabilitation programmes and surgical techniques, the rates of return-to-sport (RTS) and the subsequent ACL re-injury after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) are not optimal (Buckthorpe, 2019).
Therefore, rehabilitation plays a significant role in helping athletes return to sports activities, and inappropriate rehabilitation can even devastate a satisfactory ACLR (Wright et al., 2015).
This dissertation consists of two studies, including a systematic review in Chapter 2 that explores the research conducted on the application of immersive technologies for improving the outcome of the rehabilitation phases after ACL reconstruction and examines the correlation between virtual reality, rehabilitation, exercise therapy, and sport-related ACL injuries in patients. The second study in Chapter 3 validates the Microsoft Azure Kinect camera for body tracking of dynamic movements against the gold standard Qualisys system.
The findings indicated that VR-based systems could be a considerable alternative to real-world training to improve certain aspects of athletic performance because immersive technologies effectively offer a tool to control virtual environmental features. Finally, immersive technologies and VR-based systems are still in their infancy and will need considerable improvements in the future. Therefore, further research needs to be conducted in a theoretical frame to acknowledge the profitability of VR interventions in sports performance and rehabilitation programmes. The triple Azure Kinect system provides a consistent track of the joint centres' displacements with good to excellent agreement in the vertical and AP direction during the squat exercise in all joints except the ankles, particularly in upper joints such elbow and shoulder. However, future investigations must be conducted to acknowledge the Azure Kinect's profitability in the assessment of abnormal clinical conditions and the limits of Kinect's accuracy in various movements and planes of motion.
In conclusion, the markerless triple Azure Kinect motion capture system may be a considerable alternative to a gold standard Qualisys marker-based system for specific applications such as human activities in the frontal plane. However, future investigations must be conducted to acknowledge the Azure Kinect's profitability in the assessment of abnormal clinical conditions and the limits of Kinect's accuracy in various movements and planes of motion
The Complete Muhammad Ali
Including material and photographs not included in most of the 100 other books about the champion, Ishmael Reed's The Complete Muhammad Ali is more than just a biography-it is a fascinating portrait of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. An honest, balanced portrayal of Ali, the book includes voices that have been omitted from other books. It charts Ali's evolution from Black Nationalism to a universalism, but does not discount the Nation of Islam and Black Nationalism's important influence on his intellectual development. Filipino American author Emil Guillermo speaks about how "The Thrilla' In Manila" brought the Philippines into the 20th century. Fans of Muhammad Ali, boxing fans, and those interested in modern African American history and the Nation of Islam will be fascinated by this biography by an accomplished American author.Intro -- DEDICATION -- INTRODUCTION -- The Curious History of an Icon -- CHAPTER 1 -- CHAPTER 2 -- CHAPTER 3 -- CHAPTER 4 -- CHAPTER 5 -- CHAPTER 6 -- CHAPTER 7 -- Did the Secret Government Fear a U.S. Muslim/Overseas Muslim Alliance? -- CHAPTER 8 -- CHAPTER 9 -- The Break Between the Prophet and his Disciple -- CHAPTER 10 -- CHAPTER 11 -- CHAPTER 12 -- The GOAT (Greatest Of All Time): Ali or Louis? -- CHAPTER 13 -- The Nation of Islam, the Mob, Showdowns in Canada and Sonny Liston -- CHAPTER 14 -- CHAPTER 15 -- The Taunts: Marketing or Racism? -- CHAPTER 16 -- CHAPTER 17 -- CHAPTER 18 -- CHAPTER 19 -- Boxing and the Brain -- CHAPTER 20 -- Ali's Feet -- CHAPTER 21 -- Mr. Dick -- CHAPTER 22 -- CHAPTER 23 -- The Opening Ceremonies, November 2005 -- CHAPTER 24 -- December 2005, Las Vegas -- CHAPTER 25 -- CHAPTER 26 -- June 16, 2004 -- CHAPTER 27 -- CHAPTER 28 -- CHAPTER 29 -- Aix-en-Provence -- CHAPTER 30 -- Ali as a Black Nationalist -- San Francisco, January 2004 Black Liberation Book Fair -- CHAPTER 31 -- January 31, 2004 -- CHAPTER 32 -- October 2005, Chicago -- CHAPTER 33 -- Why Ali remained with Elijah instead of following Malcolm -- CHAPTER 34 -- CHAPTER 35 -- February 4, 2006, Oakland, California -- CHAPTER 36 -- Like Zeus Descending from Mount Olympus -- CHAPTER 37 -- CHAPTER 38 -- Tuesday, February 28, 2006, New York -- CHAPTER 39 -- Bigger Than Boxing -- CHAPTER 40 -- Tribes Gallery, New York, April 2006 -- CHAPTER 41 -- June 2006, Louisville, Kentucky -- CHAPTER 42 -- CHAPTER 43 -- CHAPTER 45 -- Bad Company -- CHAPTER 46 -- Coxson, A Very Charming Rogue -- CHAPTER 47 -- Ali and the largest embezzlement scheme in Wells Fargo history -- CHAPTER 48 -- CHAPTER 49 -- "Lonnie is a stabilizing force."-Harry Belafonte -- October 29, 2006 -- CHAPTER 50 -- Abdul Rahman -- CHAPTER 51 -- CHAPTER 52 -- CHAPTER 53How Will Ali Be Remembered? Syriac-Arabic Glosses of Isho bar Ali. Volume 2
These two volumes constitute the second part (nun-taw) of the Syriac-Arabic dictionary of the 10th cent. physician Isho bar Ali (the first half of the dictionary had been published in 1874 by G. Hoffmann). Each Syriac word is defined in Arabic, often with more than one Arabic equivalent; in addition, the author deals not just with individual Syriac words, but in some cases with phrases. Gottheil used 21 manuscripts (from Oxford, London, Paris, Berlin, Leiden, and Rome) for this edition, and he has supplied a thorough critical apparatus; the manuscripts are described in the introduction. While some manuscripts give the Arabic glosses in Syriac characters (i.e. Garshuni), Gottheil has presented them here in Arabic script. These two volumes will be of great interest to Syriac lexicographers and those who study interactions between Syriac and Arabic.Contains an English introduction by Richard J.H. Gotthei

Simultaneous molecular detection of Salmonella enterica serovars typhi, enteritidis, infantis, and typhimurium
Background: Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, as causative agent of typhoid fever, is one of the most important endemic pathogens. Non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars, including Typhimurium, Infantis, and Enteritidis are amongst the most prevalent serotypes worldwide and in developing areas such as Iran. The aim of this study was to apply a uniplex PCR for rapid detection of Salmonella spp., and a multiplex PCR for the simultaneous detection of the four most common Salmonella serovars in Iran. Methods: Current research was done in 2010 at Molecular Biology Research Center, Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. For detection of Salmonella spp a pair of primers was used to replicate a chromosomal sequence. Four other sets of primers were also designed to amplify the target genes of four Salmonella species including S. typhi, and three non-typhoidal Salmonella spp (S. enteritidis, S. infantis, and S. typhimurium). The assay specificity was investigated by testing 15 different Salmonella serovars and 8 other additional non-Salmonella species. Results: The Salmonella genus-specific PCR yielded the expected DNA band of 404 bp in all Salmonella spp., strains tested. The uniplex and multiplex PCR assays produced also the expected fragments of 489 bp, 304 bp, 224 bp, and 104 bp for serovars Typhi, Enteritidis, Typhimurium, and Infantis, respectively. Each species-specific primer pair set did not show any cross-reactivity when tested on other Salmonella serovars or other non- but related- Salmonella strains. Conclusion: Both uniplex and multiplex PCR protocols had a good specificity. They can provide an important tool for the rapid and simultaneous detection and differentiation of the four most prevalent Salmonella serovars in Iran
The Transcultural Critic: Sabahattin Ali and Beyond
The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue.
