Background Pneumonia accounts for 10% of deaths in children under five in Uganda, with at least 25 children dying from it every day. Since 2012, the Government of Uganda has been scaling up strategies to prevent and treat pneumonia among young children. However, national targets remain unmet. This study, therefore, aimed at determining the factors contributing to pneumonia among children under 5 years old at Naguru Hospital in Kampala district. Methodology A descriptive cross-sectional design involving the Questionnaire method of data collection was employed. A stratified random sampling method was used to select 100 respondents. The data was analyzed using SPSS and presented in tables, pie charts, and graphs using Microsoft Excel 2016. Results Most caregivers, 40 (40%), only attained primary education, while 13 (13%) had attained tertiary education. It was observed that 64 (64%) of the caregivers did not have a proper method of fecal disposal, and 48 (48%) were surrounded by smokers and other pollutants, passively affecting their under-five children. Socio-economic factors like poor ventilation, 70 (70%), and living in extended populations, 68 (68%) contributed to community-acquired pneumonia among the under-five children. Additionally, 50 (50%) of the respondents obtained income from casual labor, indicating low socio-economic status. 48 (48%) of the respondents had poor health-seeking behavior, a probable reason as to why 31% did not have access to health education. Conclusion The study concluded that environmental factors like poor waste disposal. There was poor health-seeking behavior among the caregivers concerning their under-five children. Poor ventilation and low income indicated a low socio-economic status among the caregivers, posing a great risk of pneumonia. Recommendation Ensure mass sensitization and health education of the community on hygiene and sanitary measures like proper toilet facilities to minimize the incidences of Pneumonia

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

IMPROVING STERILE COMPOUNDING OF PARENTERAL PREPARATIONS BY PHARMACY TECHNICIANS IN MBINGO BAPTIST HOSPITAL PHARMACY.

Abstract Breaching the required standards for sterile compounding results in patient harm and death. Three deaths have been recorded in Mbingo Baptist Hospital resulting from contaminated sterile preparations compounded by the pharmacy. This is due to a lack of training, policy and procedures, a proper compounding facility and equipment, and poor aseptic techniques. To address these problems, a project was initiated and is ongoing. The goal of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of compounded sterile parenteral preparations and ensure they are free from contamination and safe for inpatients in Mbingo Baptist Hospital from May 10th, 2023, to November 12th, 2024. The objectives are to improve the facility and equipment for sterile compounding by the 12th of November 2023, enhance personnel knowledge and skills by the 30th of December 2023, and institute a policy and standard operating procedures for sterile compounding by the 15th of April 2024. The project implementation strategy is through training, construction, and equipment purchase. The expected outcome of this project is six pharmacy technicians trained in sterile compounding, a separate facility and laminar air flow hood for sterile compounding, and a policy and standard operating procedures for sterile compounding. The acquired knowledge and skills will be sustained by assessing the aseptic technique skills of trained personnel every 6 months through media field and glove finger tests

Background Oxygen therapy has been an important aspect in clinical practice for more than 20 years. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of mothers towards oxygen administration to their children at Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital, Wakiso district. Methods. A cross-sectional study design was employed, utilizing quantitative approach to data collection through a semi-structured questionnaire. The information was manually tallied, and scientific measures were used to analyze the recorded information. Thereafter, Microsoft Word and Excel programs were employed, followed by presentation in the form of frequency tables, graphs, and figures like pie charts and bar graphs. Results The majority of the participants were aged 20-29 years, 80% had attained Primary level education and 52% were either unemployed or were housewives, and 38% had between 2-3 children. 70% had no knowledge about Oxygen therapy for children with breathing problems, and 38% felt uncomfortable when their children were receiving oxygen therapy; 70% were concerned about risks when their children were administered oxygen therapy. Conclusion. The survey revealed that overall, all knowledge and attitudes of mothers towards oxygen administration were inadequate; however, the domains of attitudes towards oxygen administration need to be improved. Recommendations. MoH and partners should strive to increase the knowledge of mothers about the importance of oxygen therapy

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
