Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Assembly and functional annotation of gene sequences handroanthus impetiginosus (mart. ex DC) Mattos
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESHandroanthus impetiginosus, known as ipê roxo, is a species present in several Brazilian biomes, with ecological and economic importance. The species has suffered strong exploration thanks to the quality of its wood. Despite of its ecological importance, economic value and medicinal potential, there is virtually no genomic study published with this species. This work aimed to take advantage of the large sequencing capacity of next generation platforms to generate, assemble and functional annotate the sequences of the entire transcriptome of H. impetiginosus. Seeds were collected from two trees on the Campus II of the Universidade Federal de Goiás. The seeds were germinated, their aerial tissues collected and the RNA extracted and sent to the University of Illinois to be sequenced on the HiSeq 2500 platform (Illumina). A total of 148,359,530 sequencing reads were generated. The adapters and low-quality sequences were removed. Contaminating sequences were detected and eliminated, and the remaining sequences were normalized. Sequences were then assembled, annotated and polymorphisms were detected. A total of 190,885 scaffolds were assembled from 23,002 genes. Mimulus guttatus was the species with the most Blast best hit against the sequences of H. impetiginosus. Of all the Gene Ontology (GO) annotated sequences, the majority had categories for Biological Process (50.94%), followed by Cellular Component (28.34%) and Molecular Function (20.72%). The most frequent GO categories related to Biological Process were metabolic and cellular processes, while in Cell Components the most frequent were cell and organelles. Catalytic activity and binding of ions and molecules were the most frequent annotated categories of Molecular Function. As the sequences were generated from a pool of RNA from four plants, 25,169 InDels and 278,121 SNPs were identified. As expected, InDels are depleted in coding regions (CDS) when compared to SNPs. These results will be important for future studies with an interest in gene expression of the species. Furthermore, the possible SNPs identified can facilitate genetic studies and genomic H. impetiginosus populations.Handroanthus impetiginosus, conhecida como ipê-roxo, é uma espécie presente em vários biomas brasileiros, tendo importância ecológica e econômica. O ipê-roxo vem sofrendo forte exploração graças à qualidade de sua madeira. Apesar de sua importância ecológica, seu valor econômico e de seu potencial medicinal, inexistem estudos genômicos publicados com esta espécie. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo principal aproveitar a grande capacidade de sequenciamento das plataformas de nova geração para gerar, montar e fazer anotação funcional da sequência do transcritoma de Handroanthus impetiginosus. Foram coletadas sementes de duas árvores matrizes de H. impetiginosus dispersas pelo Campus II da Universidade Federal de Goiás. As sementes foram germinadas, seus tecidos aéreos coletados e o RNA foi extraído e enviado à Universidade de Illinois para ser sequenciado na plataforma HiSeq 2500 da Illumina. Foi gerado um total de 148.359.530 sequências. Os adaptadores e as sequências de baixa qualidade foram removidos. Em seguida, possíveis sequências contaminantes foram detectadas e eliminadas, e as sequências restantes foram normalizadas. Ao final da normalização, as sequências foram montadas, anotadas e os polimorfismos detectados. Foram montados 190.885 transcritos (scaffolds), totalizando 23.002 genes. Mimulus guttatus, popularmente conhecida como flor de macaco, foi a espécie com maior número de sequências mais similares às de Handroanthus impetiginosus. De todas as sequências anotadas com categorias GO (Gene Ontology) a maioria teve anotações para Processo Biológico (50.94%), seguido de Componente Celular (28.34%) e Função Molecular (20.72%). As sequências mais frequentes relacionadas à Processo biológico estão ligadas a processos metabólicos e celulares, em Componentes Celulares as sequências mais frequentes estão ligadas a célula e a organelas. Já em Função Molecular as sequências mais frequentes estão relacionadas a atividade catalítica e ligação de íons e moléculas. Como as sequências foram geradas a partir de amostras de RNA de quatro plantas, 25.169 InDels e 278.121 SNPs foram identificados. Como esperado, os InDels são significativamente mais deplecionados em regiões codantes (CDS) que os SNPs.Estes resultados serão importantes para futuros estudos com interesse na expressão gênica da espécie. Além disso, os possíveis SNPs identificados poderão facilitar estudos de genética e genômica de populações para H. impetiginosus
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Genetic diversity in breeding population of african mahogany (Khaya ivorensis)

forests ecossystems in Brazil. Due to its wood value and predatory logging, Brazilian
mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is at risk of extinction. Currently, its trees are protected
and banned from logging by the Brazilian Institute of Environment (IBAMA).
Monoculture of the Brazilian mahogany is proven unsuccessful due to the attack of the
Hypsipyla grandella larvae. An alternative to Brazilian mahogany plantation is the African
mahogany (Khaya ivorensis), a species with similar high valued wood properties. The
Universidade Federal de Goiás in partnership with Mudas Nobres Company started a
breeding program with Khaya ivorensis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the
genetic diversity and divergence among 53 superior trees selected and cloned as part of the
breeding strategies. Clones were selected from three different populations, planted in two
farms in Pará state and originating from Ivory Coast and Tanzania populations. Twelve
seedlings of Khaya senegalensis were also used as a control group in the analyses of
genetic divergence. The individuals were genotyped with eight microsatellite loci
developed for K. senegalensis, by capillary electrophoresis on the ABI-3100 (Applied
Biosystems) platform. The software GeneMapper (Applied Biosystems) was used to
genotype the alleles. The average number of alleles per locus was 5.875. The average
expected heterozygosity was lower (HE = 0.563) than the average observed heterozygosity
(HO = 0.738). Therefore, the average intrapopulation fixation index was negative (f = -
0.314) indicating that high inbreeding depression is decreasing the frequency of
homozygous when compared to what would be expected under Hardy-Weinberg
Equilibrium. The average fixation index between populations was estimated at θ = 0.008,
indicating that only 0.8% of the genetic variability is due to differences between
populations. The dendrogram generated from the matrix of Rogers’ genetic distance
showed two distinct groups, separating the control group with K. senegalensis from the K.
ivorensis selected trees. The group composed of K. ivorensis had nodes with weak
bootstrap consistency indicating weak genetic structure among selected trees. The lack of
genetic structure was confirmed by a Bayesian approach on the Structure (version 2.3.4)
program. The genetic diversity observed within the selected breeding population is
comparable to that of natural populations of African and Brazilian mahoganies. The
genetic distance estimated with this work will guide the selection of divergent progenitors
to be crossed.A forte demanda por madeira nobre impulsiona o corte seletivo de árvores e a degradação
das florestas brasileiras. Devido ao extrativismo predatório, o mogno brasileiro (Swietenia
macrophylla) encontra-se em risco de extinção e proibido de corte pelo IBAMA. Uma
alternativa ao extrativismo e às tentativas fracassadas de plantios do mogno brasileiro é o
mogno africano (Khaya ivorensis). A Universidade Federal Goiás em parceria com a
empresa Mudas Nobres iniciaram pesquisas para melhoramento genético do K. ivorensis.
O objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar a diversidade e a divergência genética em 53
árvores superiores selecionada no âmbito desse programa de melhoramento. Os clones
foram selecionados em três populações diferentes, plantadas em fazendas no estado do
Pará a partir de populações da Costa do Marfim e Tanzânia na Africa. Foram utilizadas 12
árvores de Khaya senegalensis como um grupo controle nas análises de divergência
genética. Os genótipos dos indivíduos foram obtidos com oito locos microssatélites,
desenvolvidos para K. senegalensis, através de eletroforese capilar na plataforma ABI-
3100 (Applied Biosystems). O programa GeneMapper (Applied Biosystems) foi utilizado
para determinar os alelos. Todos os locos foram 100% polimórficos, com número médio de
alelos por loco de 5,875. A heterozigosidade esperada média foi menor (HE = 0,563) que a
heterozigosidade observada média (HO = 0,738). Com isso, o índice de fixação médio
intrapopulacional foi estimado em f = -0,314, indicando que a depressão por endogamia
pode estar diminuindo a frequência de homozigotos quando comparado com o que seria
esperado sob Equilíbrio de Hardy-Weinberg. Já o índice de fixação médio entre as
populações foi estimado em θ = 0,008, indicando que somente 0,8% da variabilidade
genética está estruturada entre as populações. O dendograma gerado a partir da matriz de
distância genética de Rogers demonstrou dois grupos bem distintos, separando o grupo
controle com K. senegalensis do restante das árvores de K. ivorensis. O grupo composto
pelos K. ivorensis apresentou fraca consistência entre os nós, nos bootstraps, evidenciando
a pequena diferenciação genética entre as árvores selecionadas. A falta de estruturação foi
confirmada por uma abordagem Bayesiana com o programa Structure. A população de
melhoramento possui diversidade genética comparável com a de populações naturais de
mogno africano e mogno brasileiro. Os resultados de distância genética entre os clones,
estimados neste trabalho, serão utilizados para escolha de genitores divergentes em futuros
cruzamentos

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
