Experimental dynamic testing and numerical modeling of historical belfry
The experimental characterization of historical bell towers and wall belfries can provide important information for the calibration of numerical models as well as to implement proper restoration strategies. Within this framework, the presented study is concerned with the experimental dynamic assessment of an ancient belfry dating back to 1537. The structure is part of the “SantaMaria in Aracoeli Church” (Rome, Italy), an important heritage construction placed on the summit of the Capitoline Hill, close to the building that hosts the Major’s office. Several field tests have been conducted using accelerometers, and records obtained under different dynamic loading scenarios have been examined.
Moreover, experimental accelerations have been elaborated to estimate the most important modal features of the structure and to validate a finite element model. Field tests have confirmed that severe vibrations are induced when the bells swing, and thus a slight reduction of the swing angle has been suggested in order to provide an immediate and inexpensive benefit to the structure. A new set of field
tests demonstrates that the new swing angle is sufficient to reduce the induced vibrations while preserving the original sound
Determination of temperature maps of EUV coronal hole jets
Coronal hole jets are fast ejections of plasma occurring within coronal holes, observed at Extreme-UltraViolet (EUV) and X-ray wavelengths. Recent observations of jets by the STEREO and Hinode missions show that they are transient phenomena which occur at much higher rates than large-scale impulsive phenomena like flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). In this paper we describe some typical characteristics of coronal jets observed by the SECCHI instruments of STEREO spacecraft. We show an example of 3D reconstruction of the helical structure for a south pole jet, and present how the angular distribution of the jet position angles changes from the Extreme-UltraViolet-Imager (EUVI) field of view to the CORonagraph1 (COR1) (height similar to 2.0 R(circle dot) heliocentric distance) field of view. Then we discuss a preliminary temperature determination for the jet plasma by using the filter ratio method at 171 and 195 angstrom and applying a technique for subtracting the EUV background radiation. The results show that jets are characterized by electron temperatures ranging between 0.8 and 1.3 MK. We present the thermal structure of the jet as temperature maps and we describe its thermal evolution. (C) 2011 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Trust in authorities monitoring the distribution of genetically modified foods: dimensionality, measurement issues, and determinants
Based on a combined internet and mail survey in Germany the independence of indica-tors of trust in public authorities from indicators of attitudes toward genetically modified food is tested. Despite evidence of a link between trust indicators on the one hand and evaluation of benefits and perceived likelihoods of risks, correlation with other factors is found to be moderate on average. But the trust indicators exhibit only a moderate relation with the re-spondents’ preference for either sole public control or a cooperation of public and private bodies in the monitoring of GM food distribution. Instead, age and location in either the New or the Old Lander are found to be significantly related with such preferences
Escherichia-coli lipopolysaccharide enhances the release of a no-like factor from astrocytoma-cells in culture
An 18 h coincubation of a human astrocytoma cell line (GO-G-UVW) with E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) significantly increased nitrite concentrations in cell culture medium and potentiated the inhibition of human washed thrombin-induced platelet aggregation produced solely by astrocytoma cells. This was due to the increased release from astrocytoma cells of nitric oxide (NO) or a NO-like substance, since it was prevented by oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb), a trapping agent for NO, and potentiated by superoxide dismutase (SOD), which enhances the biological effects of NO through the removal of superoxide anions. In addition, the NO-like factor released by astrocytoma cells seems to originate from L-arginine, since its anti-aggregatory properties, as well as nitrite generation in astrocytoma cells culture medium, were blocked by incubating cells with N(G)-monomethyl-L-arginine, a selective inhibitor of NO synthase. These effects were restored by L-arginine, the precursor of NO, but not by D-arginine. In conclusion, the present experiments show that LPS is able to increase the release of NO or a NO-like substance from glial cells and suggest that, under conditions in which high levels of endotoxin are present (septic shock, severe infections), or under some pathological conditions accompanied by an abnormal permeability of the blood brain barrier, NO released from glial cells may affect neuronal activity in the brain

A critical account of the relationship between institutional trust, risk perception, and technology acceptance with an application to genetically modified foods
This article critically reflects on the widely held view of a causal chain with trust in public authorities impacting technology acceptance via perceived risk. It first puts forward conceptual reason against this view, as the presence of risk is a precondition for trust playing a role in decision making. Second, results from consumer surveys in Italy and Germany are presented that support the associationist model as counter hypothesis. In that view, trust and risk judgments are driven by and thus simply indicators of higher order attitudes toward a certain technology which determine acceptance instead. The implications of these findings are discussed
PER UNA EDIZIONE CRITICA DELLE RIME DI BARTOLOMEO CAVASSICO
This PhD thesis consists of:
- An introductory part presenting the figure of the author, a description of the ms. bearing the Rime, an analysis of the form and content of the texts and the social, political and cultural context where they were produced;
- The critical edition of fifty-four poems in italian and fifteen in Bellunese dialect. An introductory cap presents the formal characteristics of the work and provides the context, if necessary; this is followed by the text, reproduced according to generally conservative criteria; at the bottom there is a first band of apparatus, aimed at containing corrections of servile errors; a second band, containing the actual genetic apparatus, bearing any variants or previous redactions of the text; and finally the commentary, aimed at clarifying critical places and pointing out parallels with other authors. For the Bellunese texts, a full translation was also provided.
- A caption index;
- Two lexical indexes, for italian and Bellunese texts, bearing the notable forms;
- Four appendices. Appendix I is a table containing all the poems, classified according to the following criteria: location in the ms., title, genre of the poem, language, possible addressee and brief summary, focusing, in particular, on the (recurring) themes present in the text. Appendix II houses vernacular texts not included in the edition, and Appendix III italian texts that the author has taken from other printings. Appendix IV contains the digital reproduction of six papers from ms. 396 of the Biblioteca Civica of Belluno.Questa tesi di dottorato si compone di:
- Una parte introduttiva che presenta la figura dell'autore, la descrizione del ms. recante le Rime, l'analisi della forma e dei contenuti dei testi e il contesto sociale, politico e culturale in cui sono stati prodotti;
- Un indice dei capoversi;
- Due indici lessicali, per i testi in volgare e per i testi in bellunese, recanti le forme notevoli;
- Quattro appendici.
Reply to the reply of the authors of the review article entitled "Management of status epilepticus in adults. Position paper of the Italian League against Epilepsy"
Reply to the article "Management of status epilepticus in adults. Position paper of the Italian League against Epilepsy"
We would like to comment on the review article entitled “Manage- ment of status epilepticus in adults. Position paper of the Italian League against Epilepsy” [1]. This article updates the previous article published by the same Italian League against Epilepsy in 2006. In particular, the updating regards some drugs (levetiracetam, lacosamide, midazolam, etc.) that were not available at that time, even if some of these have not yet obtained the specific indication to treat status epilepticus (SE) and their use is considered off-label

Do consumers want public or private bodies to monitor animal friendly production and marketing schemes? And does trust matter?
Producing according to enhanced farm animal welfare (FAW) standards increases costs along the livestock value chain, especially for monitoring certified animal friendly products. In the choice between public or private bodies for carrying out and monitoring certification, consumer preferences and trust play a role. We explore this issue by applying logit analysis involving socio-economic and psychometric variables to survey data from Italy. Results
identify marked consumer preferences for public bodies and trust in stakeholders a key determinant
