Interpretazione e ricerca sociologica.
Scritti di M. Cardano, G. ‘The Swerve’: A Modest Hint for Appreciating Tradition and Escaping Self-referentiality
The essay suggests ‘the swerve’ as an analytical metaphor useful for researchers and theorists engaged in building the future of STS studies.
What is suggested is to shape one's own “swerving methodology”, presented as a “reflective practice” adopted in the comparison with objects, with
research questions and STS epistemologies
Starting off on the wrong foot: the public perceptions of nanotechnologies and the deficit model
There are still relatively few empirical or theoretical studies on the public perception of nanotechnologies. Those that exist evince a recurrent concern which can be summed up as follows: the emerging sector of nanotechnologies must take care not to repeat the mistakes committed by biotechnologies.
Biotechnologies are cited here as a paradigmatic example because of their failure from the outset to take their ‘social impact’ seriously. Many commentators maintain that the opposition to biotechnologies is due to the combined action of three factors: widespread ignorance about the subject, an increasingly entrenched anti-scientific culture, and disinformation by the media. However, there are good reasons and sufficient empirical evidence to doubt the accuracy of this interpretation. Consequently, more than increasing the commitment in communication as a one-way process, it instead seems necessary to invest in participation, reconfiguring communication between scientists and citizens as a dialogue between peers rather than as a strategy of top-down persuasion
Dentro e fuori dal laboratorio. Trasformazioni della tecnoscienza e analisi sociologica
Even if in the perspective of the Science and Technology Studies (STS) approach the distinction between science and society has to be abandoned, scientific laboratories still remain an interesting point of observation in order to understand what is going on in science and in society. Using some paradisgmatic cases, this paper tries to show both how science is shaping the social environment as a laboratory and hoe social processes are continuosly implied in the construction of scientific knowledge. Special attention is devoted to the role played in these processes by scientific instruments and in general by machines. The "ubiquitous machines" make science possible, society organized and both of them mutually compatible
Concezioni di scienza. La dimensione cognitiva dell'impresa scientifica
The article analyses assumptions relating to features, tasks and meanings of scientific activity which influence the scientist's work. It is first suggested a tridimensional model as a possible mean for the analysis of the social construction of scientific knowledge; secondly, it is emphasized the role of scientist's ideas about science in this process of construction. Results of research recently carried out give the possibility of studying the content and the inner structure of the Italian physicists', biologists' and economists' ideas about science
Scienza, democrazia e partecipazione
