An integrated approach to energy use: the case study of the ACEA site
Currently, ACEA utilises biogas obtained from the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste for thermal and electric energy recovery through endothermic engines (3 MW, in total). By 2020, the biogas produced at the site will no longer be used as a fuel for the combined heat and power units, but it is expected to feed a purification system in order to obtain a flow of biomethane to be injected into the natural gas network. This is part of the Italian strategy to achieve the Horizon 2020 European targets aimed at promoting the renewable production of transport fuels. In order to encourage sustainability and innovative prototype technologies, ACEA has also been involved in some European research projects, in particular for the conversion of biogas into other energy carriers. furthermore, ACEA ha recently built a flexible experimental platform that can used for the validation step of prototypes in an industrial field
The Potential Role of Ammonia for Hydrogen Storage and Transport: A Critical Review of Challenges and Opportunities
Hydrogen is being included in several decarbonization strategies as a potential contributor in some hard-to-abate applications. Among other challenges, hydrogen storage represents a critical aspect to be addressed, either for stationary storage or for transporting hydrogen over long distances. Ammonia is being proposed as a potential solution for hydrogen storage, as it allows storing hydrogen as a liquid chemical component at mild conditions. Nevertheless, the use of ammonia instead of pure hydrogen faces some challenges, including the health and environmental issues of handling ammonia and the competition with other markets, such as the fertilizer market. In addition, the technical and economic efficiency of single steps, such as ammonia production by means of the Haber–Bosch process, ammonia distribution and storage, and possibly the ammonia cracking process to hydrogen, affects the overall supply chain. The main purpose of this review paper is to shed light on the main aspects related to the use of ammonia as a hydrogen energy carrier, discussing technical, economic and environmental perspectives, with the aim of supporting the international debate on the potential role of ammonia in supporting the development of hydrogen pathways. The analysis also compares ammonia with alternative solutions for the long-distance transport of hydrogen, including liquefied hydrogen and other liquid organic carriers such as methanol
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. The potential role of biomethane for the decarbonization of transport: An analysis of 2030 scenarios in Italy
This paper aims at evaluating the best allocation of potential biomethane generation for the decarbonization of the transport system, presenting a case study in Italy. The country has some peculiar features, such as several operating biogas plants, additional potential feedstock for biogas/biomethane generation, a well-developed natural gas network and established relevant natural gas uses in different final sectors, including transport. Based on current estimates for sustainable biomethane potential by 2030, ranging from 2.3 to 7.6 billion cubic meters depending on the scenario, the analysis compares technologies for the generation, distribution and final use of biomethane. The results of the analysis confirm the potential interesting contribution of biomethane in decarbonizing the Italian transport system: a billion cubic meters of biomethane can lead to 2.33–4.37 MtCO2e savings, depending on the feedstock mix and the application. On a national basis, annual climate emission savings in 2030 range from 10.0 to 26.7 MtCO2e, depending on the scenario. Additional 3.1–8.1 MtCO2e of emissions can be avoided if the CO2 captured during the biomethane upgrading can be stored or reused. The proposed methodology could be used to extend the analysis to other countries, and to the European context
Hourly electricity CO2 intensity profiles based on the real operation of large-scale natural gas combined cycle cogeneration plants
The decarbonization of energy systems is a major challenge that requires complex cross-sectoral strategies that need to be supported by energy modeling. As many technologies rely on electricity, an accurate estimation of its CO2 intensity is of utmost importance for the reliability of modeling results. When electricity is generated from fossil sources, its CO2 intensity depends on several parameters. This research paper presents an hourly calculation of the CO2 intensity of power generation from natural gas combined cycles, based on real data from several years of operation of three plants. As these plants are also operated in combined heat and power mode, two alternative allocation methods are compared. The results confirm the variability of CO2 intensity based on the different operation strategies of the plants and the share of heat and electricity generated. The hourly analysis shows average values in the range of 230–250 gCO2/kWh in winter, rising to around 330–370 gCO2/kWh in summer. The real CO2 intensity profiles presented in this paper can be integrated into energy planning models to improve their ability to estimate the potential benefits of different decarbonization solutions by including the effect of the operational profiles over the day and the year
