Synthesis and flame behaviour of allylic phosphonated (co)polymers or telomers
Since July 2008, a wide rnage of halogenated flame retardants was withdrawed from the market for environmental problems by the European Union. Their flame retardant behavior was also evaluated. Allyl cyclic phosphonated monomers are synthesized by transesterification between a glycol with a double bond and hydrogenophosphonate. An NMR study of the obtained diastereoisomers allowed us to fully understand the structure of these compounds. Radical homopolymerization of hydrogenated dioxaphosphorinane, in the presence of AIBN as initiator, allowed us to obtain polymers with two molar mass distributions: one for oligomers and one for polymers of higher molar mass. This second species is due to a hyperbranched structure showing poor solubility in common solvents, which damage the future applications. The telomerization of the same monomer was carried out using dimethyl hydrogenophosphonate as chain transfer agent leading only one population of oligomers. Furtehrmore, the replacement of the hydrogen linked to phosphorus by an alkyl or aryl group simplify the mechanism of polymerization since only linear oligomers are obtained. Acceptor-donor copolymerization of maleic anhydride and phosphonated allyl ethers, allowed producing alternated copolymers with the opportunity to introduce different reactive groups such as carboxylic acids. Then, oligomers were produced by radical polymerization of phosphonated allyl amine in order to potentially use the nitrogen-phosphorus synergy. An overview of all the phosphonated polymers previously synthesized, was done with the aim of testing their flame retardant performances. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a good thermal behavior of the telomers and the copolymers, similar heat release rate was observed by microcalorimeter compare to commercial product. High efficiency of these phosphorus-containing flame retardants polymers was finally evidenced by using the cone calorimeter on textile

Conception of self-healing polymer coating based on hemiacetal ester chemistry
This thesis work aim to demonstrate a polymer self-healing concept using hemiacetal ester functions. These functions are known to thermally dissociate into carboxylic acids and vinyl ethers between 100 and 250 °C depending of structures. This property is commonly use to react carboxylic acids “on demand”. This “on demand” reactivity is exploited here for self-healing, by introducing hemiacetal esters into a bio-based epoxidized polymer matrix. An investigation of the hemiacetal ester functions properties made possible the selection a “repairing agent”, based on its dissociation temperature, and demonstrate its capacity to react with epoxy functions. Furthermore, this investigation granted the identification of restrictions dues to this function reactivity, which influenced the polymer matrix choice.A polymer matrix was establish from epoxidized linseed oil by grafting of acrylate functions. This oil was mixed with an adhesion promotor and a reactive diluent before being deposited as a coating on 3003 aluminum alloy and cross-linked under UV. Electrochemical impedance measurements demonstrate interesting barrier properties and a positive impact of the repairing agent under thermal treatment. However, the established matrix do not present enough mobility to repair defects of several microns wide.To solve this difficulty, a polymer network whose flow capacity is based on a hemiacetal ester exchange reaction, highlighted in this manuscript, was established and a rheological study demonstrated its flow ability under thermal treatment
synthesis of biobased polymers for the development of new alkyd waterborne paints with high performance and low environmental impact
Brought back into the spotlight thanks to the recent awareness of environmental issues and the decrease in petroleum resources, alkyd resins have experienced a boom in recent years. Indeed, the development of products that are more respectful of nature and humans has become a priority in today's world. Resulting from the polycondensation of renewable raw materials, they are part of a more sustainable chemistry. However, alkyd paints rely on slow oxidative drying, unlike acrylic paints which dry only physically. Thus toxic metal catalysts are necessary to obtain reasonable drying times of less than 6 hours. These catalysts are potentially carcinogenic and subject to the REACH regulation, so they should be replaced. The objective of this thesis is to overcome the need for oxidative drying by increasing the molar masses of resins.First, a state of the art on alkyds is presented. This is followed by an in-depth study of Secoia® 1400 resin, Ecoat’s more than 85% bio-based commercial resin which is used as a support for the following studies. Then, model study of the Secoia® 1400 resin was carried out in order to determine the role of each of the constituents present in its complex formulation. Various phenomena brought into play during the rise in mass of resins have been investigated. Following these observations, modifications to the synthesis process as well as new formulations are implemented in order to respond to the problem of the thesis. Finally, a state of the art of hybrid alkyd technology is presented

All-polymer Layer by Layer coating as efficient solution to polyurethane foam flame retardancy
This paper deals with the Layer by Layer assembly of an all-polymer chitosan/poly(allylamine diphosphonate) coating characterized by high efficiency in reducing the flammability of open cell polyurethane foams. The Layer by Layer assembly of the two components yields a supralinear growing coating that can be easily deposited on the complex 3D structure of polyurethane foams while preserving the open cell nature of the substrate. 2 bi-layers (BL) are enough to guarantee the deposition of a continuous thin coating capable of preventing the dangerous melt dripping phenomenon during flammability tests. The very same coating can dramatically reduce the heat release rate under a 35 kW/m2 heat flux as it can efficiently hinder the foam structural collapsing during combustion. 2 BL coatings achieve a reduction of 48% while 4 BL reaches the maximum reduction of 55%, thus confirming the great efficiency of the coating in reducing the PU flammability at such low deposition steps and coating thicknesses
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
