Photography At Edinburgh Napier University : A Retrospective 2012.

    No full text
Edinburgh Napier University is delighted to host a reunion of alumni, to celebrate more than 35 years of its Photography and Film programmes.Photography has a long history at Edinburgh Napier that parallels the development and progress of the institution. From the City & Guilds qualifications offered in 1964 when it was simply Napier Technical College, to the Napier College of Science and Technology years, from 1974 to 1988, when it offered ONC and HND qualifications. We first offered degrees in 1984 and the college became a Polytechnic in 1988. A further Honours year was added in 1992 when Edinburgh Napier became a University, and our first cohort graduated in 1994.Like the institution itself, Photography and Film has gone from strength to strength. Since the late 80’s it has benefitted from a truly international reputation, welcoming students from all over the world.Inevitably the last 35 years have seen several developments in the teaching of Photography and Film at Edinburgh Napier. Higher education in the Arts and Creative Industries cannot remain static; it must move with the demands and expectations of contemporary practice. The next stage of development for our programme is its division into two distinct, specialist programmes – BA (Hons) Film and BA (Hons) Photography

Effect of cutting management and nitrogen supply on yield and quality of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum)

    No full text
In a series of cutting experiments, average apparent nitrogen recovery of applied fertilizer N by Napier grass was approximately 50%. Incorporation of cattle manure improved nitrogen utilization. Mixtures with Desmodium intortum substantially improved yield and protein content. There was a fair to good relation between morphology and crude protein content and in vitro organic matter digestibility of Napier grass

Small and Medium Sized Business and Disadvantaged Parents: Overcoming Training, Recruitment and Retention Barriers

    No full text
The objective of this project was to investigate how employer demand side issues affect the recruitment of lone parents. Specifically it considered how recruitment and retention activities within small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) in Scotland affected the supply of labour from such disadvantaged groups. The research is consistent with current policy efforts to improve labour supply for SMEs and to increase employment rates amongst lone parents and reduce child poverty. The research was carried out by the Employment Research Institute, Napier University, Edinburgh. The project was part funded by the European Social Fund Objective 3 Programme, as part of Priority 4 - A competitive economy, Measure 4a.1 - Positive actions for workforce training and learning. This reports sets out the detailed findings of the project, and a shorter summary document is also available

    The Dissertation Maze - A Dissertation e-toolkit

    No full text
The Dissertation Maze is an e-toolkit written and developed by researchers at Edinburgh Napier Business School. It seeks to support the transition of articulating home and international students arriving at Edinburgh Napier University for their final year of study. The development of the e-toolkit was in response to our research into the barriers and enablers of direct entry students embarking on the Undergraduate dissertation in the Business School. Direct entry students often find embarking on a dissertation a daunting prospect since they can lack the required knowledge and academic writing skills to formulate a viable dissertation proposal and have not given sufficient thought to deciding on a topic for their dissertation study. Through our initial research we identified that one way to support students’ transition into Higher Education, and ease ‘chronic uncertainty’, was to provide opportunities for ‘scaffolding’. In response to this, an innovative online e-toolkit was developed with the aim of supporting students’ preparation for undertaking the Dissertation in the Business School

    Vector Padé Approximants

    No full text
Napier Report CAM 95-3 (1995)We consider the construction of rational approximations to given power series whose coefficients are vectors. The approximants are in the form of vector-valued continued fractions which may be used to obtain vector Pade approximants using recurrence relations. Algorithms for the determination of these fractions have been established using Clifford algebras. We devise new algorithms based on these which involve only vectors and scalars — a desirable characteristic for computations involving vectors of large dimension. Finally, we present a novel use of Clifford algebras by suggesting a definition of approximant which reflects more faithfully the singularities of the given functio

This interview was conducted as part of Cleveland State University\u27s 50th Anniversary Commemoration effort. Bill Napier is currently the Secretary to the Board of Trustees at CSU. Napier is a native of Cleveland, Tennessee. Napier came to Ohio initially as a graduate student at Ohio State University and was hired on as President Harold Enarson\u27s Executive Assistant while pursuing his degree. Bill worked for the Board of Regents for a number of years before he was approached by CSU president, Micheal Schwartz, about coming to Cleveland to work in government relations for the university. Of particular interest are Napier\u27s accounts of Governor James Rhodes and CSU\u27s first president, Harold Enarson. Also of note is Napier\u27s description of his role at CSU since his relationship with Micheal Schwartz
