Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Combined adaptive power-rate control in CDMA systems

In this thesis, combined power and rate adaptations in the reverse channel of a multicell CDMA cellular system over a Nakagami-Lognormal frequency selective fading channel are considered. Imperfect power control, user traffic distribution, Intracell interference, co-channel interference, a RAKE receiver and spatial diversity are also considered. Numerical results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation show that power and rate adaptations result in an increase of the system capacity and prolong the mobile stationαs battery life.Hellenic Army authorhttp://archive.org/details/combineddaptivep10945204

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Contribution to the improvement of the road safety system through the application of new technologies of training candidate drivers

    No full text
The objective of the present doctorate dissertation is the improvement of the road safety system by the incorporation of new technologies of multimedia and simulation into the education of candidate drivers. In order to achieve this objective, the systematic approach was followed. Initially, the road safety system was examined and the fact that the subsystem of human factor plays the most important role, in relation to the subsystems of vehicle and road / environment, was documented. Afterwards, the human factor was examined and was found that in relation to other actions, i.e. awareness campaigns and police enforcement, the education plays the most important role. Of the several forms of driver training, i.e. professional drivers’ training and retraining, the training of candidate drivers plays the most important role. The reason for that are the worst accident numbers of novice drivers in relation to the rest and also the fact that candidate drivers’ training is an investment for the future, since they will be driving for more time than any other driver. In relation to candidate drivers’ training, the main trend in the relative European and worldwide research is to emphasize on the higher hierarchical levels of driving by the incorporation of new technologies, both for theoretical and practical training. The aforementioned, were documented at the relevant chapters, work that produced three databases: a) training and licensing systems followed in several European countries, b) multimedia applications for candidate drivers’ theoretical training, and c) driver training simulators for candidate drivers’ practical training, which are presented at the relevant annexes. Following, pilot applications for the evaluation of new candidate drivers’ training technologies are presented and the role they can play in relation to the road safety system is documented. The experiments that were conducted for the needs of the present doctorate dissertation follow, with the participation of 60 candidate drivers and 30 driver trainers. Specifically, a simulation of the pilot applications with results of driver trainers is presented and also an experiment for the spotting of candidate drivers’ vulnerabilities, in which the results of candidate drivers training were compared with driver trainers’ respective results and the most well known hierarchical model of driving, i.e. GDE matrix, was quantified. The results of this experiment were not those that had been predicted, since important driver trainers’ vulnerabilities were spotted. However, the relevant bibliography provides some clues about the reason why this happens. Finally, the results of the present doctorate dissertation, proposals for further research and general proposals in relation to the improvement of the road safety system are presented, which are summed up to the following: the incorporation of new technologies of multimedia and simulation into the training procedure of candidate drivers has many to offer to the improvement of the road safety system, but in parallel measures should be taken in relation to the whole provided education whereas Greek driver trainers themselves have important vulnerabilities, not as much regarding their theoretical background but mainly in relation to their driving manners, because they have not integrated the concept of defensive driving into the way they drive.Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή έχει ως στόχο τη συμβολή στη βελτίωση του συστήματος της οδικής ασφάλειας με τη χρήση νέων τεχνολογιών εκπαίδευσης υποψηφίων οδηγών.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
