She has received an American Book Award and a PEN/Jerard Award and her work has appeared in publications including The New Yorker, The Paris Review, Time, and Best American Essays. She teaches at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she also directs the MFA Program in Creative Writing

Dr. Nguyen Khac Vien (78) kehrte 1963 nach 25 Jahren Aufenthalt in Frankreich nach Vietnam zurück und war bis zur Pensionierung Direktor des Fremsprachenverlags in Hanoi und Herausgeber der Studienreihe „Etudes Vietnamienne“. Er leitet heute das Zentrum für Studien in Kinder-Psychologie.(N.T.-Zentrum). Diese Nichtregierungs-Organisation ist die erste dieser Art in Vietnam und wurde 1988 von ihm und einer Gruppe von Kinderärzten und Pädagogen gegründet. Nguyen Khac Vien konnte seine politische Unabhängigkeit in allen Richtungskämpfen der KP Vietnams behaupten und genießt innerhalb und außerhalb Vietnams als Intellektueller der KP und Anwalt eines „humanen Sozialismus“ großes Ansehen. Er setzt sich seit langer Zeit mit der bürokratischen Entwicklung und Entfremdung der Partei auseinander und richtete bereits 1981 einen offenen Brief an die Nationalversammlung mit der Forderung nach Trennung von Partei und Staat. Er gehört zu den Kräften, die das Reformprogramm des VI. Parteitages von 1986 eingeleitet haben und seitdem für eine konkrete Umsetzung plädieren. In diesem Brief an die Vaterländische Front verabschiedet er sich von der „führenden Rolle“ der KP Vietnams und wirft eine Menge Fragen über den gegenwärtigen „Siegeszug der freien Marktwirtschaft“ auf

Coupled Flight Dynamic and Unsteady Aeroservoelastic Modeling and Control of a Flexible Wing Aircraft
Recent developments in airframe design include the increasing application of modern lightweight materials. Airframe designs based on composite materials are able to provide sufficient structural strength at lower mass, but often have decreased structural rigidity. Flight vehicles with relatively flexible structures exhibit more prominent coupling of aeroelasticity and flight dynamics, and may suffer from degraded aerodynamic efficiency and decrease of control surface effectiveness. In order to address this issue, a multi-disciplinary approach to control effectiveness and aerodynamic efficiency of flexible aircraft is required. The purpose is not only to neutralize negative aeroelastic effects, but also to employ deliberate reshaping of the elastic wing to improve efficiency and handling of the aircraft. To this end, NASA is researching a novel type of control effector, the Variable Camber Continuous Trailing Edge Flap (VCCTEF). Using the multi-segment flaps of the VCCTEF, it is possible to adapt the camber of the wing in order to achieve an optimum lift distribution. In the context of aircraft with flexible airframes, a representation of flight characteristics based on a rigid-body 6DOF flight dynamic model is inadequate. The prominent coupling of flight dynamics, structural dynamics, and high-bandwidth control surfaces calls for coupled flight dynamic and aeroservoelastic modeling of flexible vehicles. The purpose of this thesis project was to develop such a coupled model for application during the conceptual design phase of adaptive aeroelastic wing technologies. A comprehensive flight dynamic and aeroservoelastic modeling approach for a flexible wing aircraft with VCCTEF in turbulent air was developed. Unsteady aerodynamics of the flexible wing and flap system were found using modified aerodynamic strip theory based on steady-flow vortex-lattice results and 2D unsteady aerodynamics models. Compressibility effects on the unsteady aerodynamics, based on the work by Beddoes and Leishman et al., were taken into account throughout the modeling effort and a comparison was made with unsteady aerodynamics for incompressible flow. In order to demonstrate the model and the effectiveness of the VCCTEF, a multi-objective flight controller for flight dynamic maneuvering, flutter suppression, and drag reduction was designed. Antimicrobial resistant phenotypes of ETEC isolates from piglets with diarrhea in North Vietnam
Both disk diffusion and broth micro-dilution assays were employed to determine the level of resistance in Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) isolates (n = 170) obtained from preweaning piglet colibacillosis from the two different pig production systems (commercial piggeries and small holder farmers) in Vietnam. Overall, tetracycline, streptomycin, amoxicillin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and chloramphenicol showed markedly higher rates of resistance. Both apramycin and ceftiofur are active against all ETEC isolates. These antimicrobials could be recommended as the drugs of choice for the treatment of E. coli infections in young pigs in North Vietnam. Resistance to third-generation cephalosporin (ceftiofur, ceftazidime, and cefoxitin) was not observed in Vietnamese ETEC isolates. Suggestions for improvement in Vietnam employment laws in the context of gender equality
5 p.Improving gender equality in the workplace is an urgent task for Vietnam Communist Party and the Government. Despite the ratification of international conventions on labour, women rights, as well as amendment to relevant domestic laws, it appears that the provisions have not satisfied the requirements set forth to combat discrimination at work against women. Through this article, the author intends to propose some ideas to improve the laws on the protection of the current female workers’ rights based on the 2012 Labour Code (amended and supplemented in 2019), related laws and sub–law documents
Environmental impact assessment of the pangasius sector in the Mekong Delta
In the past seven years the export of white pangasius fillets grew fast. The culture method shifted to intensive production of striped catfish (Ca Tra) in deep ponds because this is more efficient than the pen and cage culture of Ca Basa. Today, striped catfish comprises more than 90 % of the culture. The increased production was achieved by producers investing in large ponds. The market chain is gearing towards vertical integration. Most farms keep fish at relatively high densities of 15 to 25 fish/m3 in ponds having a depth of up to 4m, and are advised to exchange daily 20 to 40% of the water. The sustainability of the sector is threatened due to the increased environmental pressure, and hampered by the growing cost of inputs and reduced farm-gate prices of the fish. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) intends to identify measures for preventing or mitigating the environmental impacts of catfish culture in the Mekong Delta. The EIA was a seven-step process during which we interacted twice with part of the main stakeholders.
