Finding Josep Solanes: mobilizing the legacies of Republican exile in Spanish cultural studies
No full textUsing the example of Republican exile Josep Solanes, this article argues how the category of exile and the reality of the Republican exile of 1939 can be mobilized for a political questioning of the meanings of “Spanish” in twentieth-century Spanish culture as defining and framing disciplinary areas. Still a very little known author, the article reconstructs the disciplinary fields, historical conflicts, personal encounters, border and language crossings necessary to assess Solanes’ work, the conditions of his radical intervention in the field of psychiatry, first in Catalonia and later in France and Venezuela, and how they framed his conceptualization of the experience of exile. The last part of the article, through a consideration of Solanes’ explorations of the exilic as a post-national condition, reflects on what could be the political and ethical conditions to recuperate a legacy that resists being inscribed in, or identified with, the nation. In an important way, this article should be read as an introduction to the very little known Josep Solanes that lays out the importance of his work and signals its potential for further research on new directions in the study of exile
Spectral differences between galaxies in low- and high-density environments

With this aim, we have implemented a stacking technique for the calculation of average spectra of galaxies with high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) and resolution, as
well as an extinction-corrected local density estimator. We use the huge dataset of ~ 1; 500; 000 homogeneous optical spectra reduced and published in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 inside the limits of the Legacy Survey. Our methodology is tested against the class of galaxies with measured Hα emission, finding important differences in the continuum and in the heights of the principal emission lines

Automated classification of stellar spectra
No full textTreballs Finals de Grau de Física, Facultat de Física, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2020, Tutor: Josep Maria Solanes MajúaWe have analyzed the performance of a PCA-based automated classifier of stellar spectra into the MK system, using as benchmark the dataset of optical spectra listed in the SDSS-DR15. We have found that it is possible to account for 99% of the total variance arising from good-quality A, F, G, K, and M stellar spectra with only three principal components, though we have ended up using four to further increase the discriminant power of our methodology. The projections of a subset of 50; 000 good-quality spectra on this 4D space have been used to determine the most probable spectral type of test stars in samples of spectra of increasing quality, with which we have evaluated the goodness of our classification procedure. Within a general scenario of excellent results, we found that a Gaussian Kernel performs somewhat better than a Top-Hat Kernel when calculating membership probabilities, that the efficiency of our classification method improves with the S=N of the spectra, and that the classification of G-type stars is the less reliable and that of
F-type stars the most incomplete

No full textLa información de esta miniguía se basa en los trabajos de los proyectos dirigidos por los arquitectos Miguel Messmacher e Ignacio Marquina.Los primeros habitantes de Cholula se asentaron alrededor de una laguna, hoy desaparecida, al este de la ciudad actual. Ese primer poblado, tal vez sólo una pequeña aldea, se desarrolló entre los años 800-200 a.C.(Preclásico Medio). El centro ceremonial más antiguo surgiría, probablemente, hacia los años 200-100 a.C. Cholula fue un importante centro ceremonial y urbano, de gran extensión, durante el Clásico (100-700 d.C.). Para entonces, suponemos existió un gobierno capaz de organizar y dirigir aquellas actividades que requerían de una amplia participación social, esto se refleja en la magnitud de sus principales monumentos. Sobre la historia del periodo Clásico existen diversas interpretaciones. Para algunos investigadores, el desarrollo de la ciudad fue paralelo al de Teotihuacan -en ese entonces el centro hegemónico el Altiplano-, y su auge, decadencia y abandono habrían sido simultáneos. Para otros, Cholula permaneció, tiempo después de la caída de Teotihuacan y, aprovechó el vacío ocasionado por ese evento, como un importante centro urbano y comercial. Por motivos aún inciertos, la Gran Pirámide fue abandonada hacia los años 700-800 d.C. y la ciudad perdió gran parte de su población. Tras este periodo de decadencia, resurge y es el principal centro religioso y de mercado del Posclásico (1200-1 521).</p
