A procedure for the detection of anomalous input-output patterns

    No full text
Data preprocessing is a main step in data mining because real data can be corrupted for different causes and high performance data mining systems require high quality data. When a database is used for training a neural network, a fuzzy system or a neuro-fuzzy system, a suitable data selection and pre-processing stage can be very useful in order to obtain a reliable result. For instance, when the final aim of a system trained through a supervised learning procedure is to approximate an existing functional relationship between input and output variables, the database that is exploited in the system training phase should not contain input-output patterns for which the same input or similar input sets are associated to very different values of the output variable. In this paper a procedure is proposed for detecting non-coherent associations between input and output patterns: by comparing two distance matrices associated to the input and output patterns, the elements of the available dataset, where similar values of input variables are associated to quite different output values can be pointed out. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm when pre-processing data coming from an industrial database is presented and discussed

Effects of traditional and ultrasonic liposuction on adipose tissue: a biochemical approach.

Little is known about the interaction of ultrasonic liposculpture with fat tissue. The surgical technique is well established and its clinical effects are satisfactory. However, the in vivo effects on adipose tissue remain to be determined. Previous studies have shown that ultrasound waves break fat cells. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether ultrasound waves can cause the release of fatty acids from the molecular structure of triglycerides. A double-blind study was designed with samples obtained from traditional and ultrasonic liposuction of an equivalent area in the same patient. Samples were checked for triglycerides and for free fatty acids. Triglyceride values were always higher in the sample that had undergone ultrasonic procedure. No significant differences were observed between the free fatty acid chromatograms of the two kinds of samples analyzed. Data showed that no changes occurred in the triglyceride molecule when using ultrasound waves in the experimental condition

GA-Based Solutions Comparison for Storage Strategies Optimization for an Automated Warehouse

    No full text
The paper analyses the issues behind allocation and reordering strategies optimization for an existing automated warehouse for the steelmaking industry. Genetic Algorithms are employed to this purpose by deriving custom chromosome structures as well as ad-hoc crossover and mutation operators. A comparison between three different solutions capable to deal with multi-objective optimization are presented: the first approach is based on a common linear weighting function that combines different objectives; in the second one, a fuzzy system is used to aggregate objective functions, while in the last one the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm is applied in order to exploit a real multi-objective optimization. These three approaches are described and results are presented in order to highlight benefits and pitfalls of each technique

Compte-rendu de Mélanie MATARESE (2024): Comment la France a (encore) perdu l’Algérie, Les Presses de la Cité, Paris 240 pages

Mélanie Matarese\u27s book examines the recurrent tensions in Franco-Algerian relations. Although the colonial past is invoked each time, it is not the only factor contributing to the differences between the two countries. The author questions the persistence of fixed perceptions influenced by stereotypes. The need of French political parties to exploit relations with Algiers in a context marked by the rise of the extreme right contributes to the poisoning of relations.    El libro de Mélanie Matarese examina las tensiones recurrentes en las relaciones franco-argelinas. "Eczemas" and leptin.

    No full text
Background: Leptin belongs to the helical cytokine family and has structural similarity to interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12, IL-15, prolactin, and growth hormone. It is mainly secreted by adipocytes but (at lower levels) also by stomach, skeletal muscle, and placenta. Initially, leptin was considered an antiobesity hormone, but experimental evidence has also shown pleiotropic effects on hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, lymphoid organ homeostasis, and T-lymphocyte functions. Recent evidence indicates that leptin modifies T-cell immunity by promoting T helper 1 proinflammatory immune response and production of cytokines. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate leptin serum levels in patients with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and atopic dermatitis and to evaluate the correlation of these levels with different patterns of lymphocyte subpopulations. Methods: Serum leptin was assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Immunophenotypic analysis of peripheral blood was performed by flow cytometry. Results: We found that serum leptin levels were higher in ACD patients than in healthy controls (p = .02). In these patients, an inverse correlation between serum leptin and the percentage of CD4 +CD25 + T lymphocytes was observed (p = .002). Conclusion: These data seem to suggest that leptin might play a role in the pathogenesis of ACD and thus have implications for the therapy for AC
