Alternative Bayesian analysis of capture recapture data with behavioral effect modelling

    No full text
n the context of capture-recapture experiments we consider a generalized version of a model framework recently proposed in Chao and Yang (2005) to better understand behavioural pattern in response to trapping experience. A general order Markov structure allows to incorporate in the analysis flexible behavioural effects on the capture probabilities. We point out that the conditional likelihood approach used in the original work to carry out inference yields unbounded estimates with positive probability. We derive conditions under which pathological inference occurs and connect it to a similar problem highlighted within a different restricted removal sampling framework. To overcome the likelihood failure we investigate alternative Bayesian estimators under different non-informative prior distributions and verify with a simulation study their comparative merits in terms of efficiency and interval estimate coverage

Metal Ion Catalysis in the b-Elimination Reactions of N-[2-(2-Pyridyl)ethyl]quinuclidinium and N-[2-(2-Pyridyl)ethyl]quinuclidinium in Aqueous Solution

Catalysis of the â-elimination reaction of N-[2-(4-pyridyl)ethyl]quinuclidinium (1) and N-[2-(2- pyridyl)ethyl]quinuclidinium (2) by Zn2+ and Cd2+ in OH-/H2O (pH ) 5.20-6.35, 50 °C, and í ) 1 M KCl) has been studied. In the presence of Zn2+, the elimination reactions of both isomers occur from the Zn2+-complexed substrates (C). The equilibrium constants for the dissociation of the Zn2+- complexes are as follows: Kd ) 0.012 ( 0.003 M (isomer 1) and Kd ) 0.065 ( 0.020 M (isomer 2). The value of kH2O C for isomer 1 is 4.81 10-6 s-1. For isomer 2 both the rate constants for the “water” and OH--induced reaction of the Zn2+-complexed substrate could be measured, despite the low concentration of OH- in the investigated reaction mixture [kH2O C ) 1.97 10-6 s-1 and kOHC ) 21.9 M-1 s-1, respectively]. The measured metal activating factor (MetAF), i.e., the reactivity ratio between the complexed and the uncomplexed substrate, is 8.1 104 for the OH--induced elimination of 2. This high MetAF can be compared with the corresponding proton activating factor (Alunni, S.; Conti, A.; Palmizio Errico, R. J. Chem. Soc., Perkin Trans. 2 2000, 453), PAF ) 1.5 106 and is in agreement with an E1cb irreversible mechanism (AxhDE* + DN) (Guthrie, R. D.; Jencks, W. P. Acc. Chem. Res. 1989, 22, 343). A value of kH2O C g 23 10-7 s-1 is estimated for the Cd2+-complexed isomer 2, while catalysis by Cd2+ has not been observed for isomer 1

The authors present a 5-year clinical experience in audiological screening performed at the neonatal center of the Policlinico of Perugia, Italy. The study was performed using an IL088 Otodynamics unit produced by Bray & Kemp. A total of 1328 newborns (2656 ears) were tested on the 4th day of life and during spontaneous sleep. None of the children had any audiological risk factors. The test was repeated one month later for all subjects who lacked Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions and in many cases ABR testing was performed by 3 months of age. The authors present the undoubted advantages of the present method which include the fact that it is a) easy to perform, b) non invasive, c) sensitive and d) effective. They then discuss the main problems which arose during the course of the screening and advance some solutions. For the most part these problems involved the high number of false positives (13.1%) and the high percentage of subjects who were lost to subsequent controls (approximately 6% of the total population). The number of false positives could be reduced by using a linear acoustic stimulation (rather than the non-linear stimulation which is the default parameter for the machine). Such a linear stimulation can improve the signal-to-noise ratio, thus making it possible to adopt a reproducibility index lower than the 70% presently used (however, this brings with it the risk of including a certain number of false negatives). Finally, they discuss the possibility of only retesting those subjects with bilateral lack of TEOAEs, thus reducing the number of check-ups to be performed a month later

Les otoemissions acoustiques evoquees pendant les 60 premieres heures de vie.

In order to verify how age influences in the first days of life the presence of Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (EOAE), the authors tested 52 newborns. They conclude that EOAE is a reliable technique as an early detection test of hearing loss in children. However, a high percentage of false positive cases during the very first days of life advises against its too early utilization
