Comparative analysis of studies investigating the influence of extremely-low frequency electromagnetic fields on human EEG patterns
In addition to dominant radio-frequency content, extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic field (EMF) components are also produced from the devices for global mobile communication. Being in the same range as human EEG frequencies there is a potential for mutual interference. However, they were rarely subject of scientific investigation. In this paper, we conducted a comparative analysis of published studies on similar topics in order to evaluate the need for further exploration. We analyzed published studies from several sources, that ranged a time period of 13 years and 3 continents, and we only found out five related studies. They deal mainly with people belonging to the same age group (around 27 year of age) and in quite similar physiological (e.g. healthy individuals) and mental conditions (e.g. awake). Most of the studies use artificial means of EMF production, but the experimental protocol and the EEG montage differ considerably in each of them. Obtained results in all of the studies show considerable changes in EEG power spectrum under the ELF EMF. However, evidenced changes differ from each other in each of the studies. Positive and inconsistent results indicate that there is need for further, more specific and standardized investigation
Computer-assisted evaluation and treatment of depression in cystic fibrosis patients
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a widespread chronic multisystem disease that profoundly impairs physical and mental health, with anxiety and depression being on the forefront of CF-associated problems. This study intends to explore alpha EEG patterns as main indicators of relaxation/anxiety, and to investigate prospective of neurofeedback treatment for depression in CF patients.
The EEG data were obtained from 13 CF and 10 healthy subjects, in two sessions using BOSLAB equipment and additionally analyzed with WINEEG software. Between measurements, an alpha increasing neurofeedback session was applied. Values of Alpha Peak Frequency (APF) were compared with the standard personality assessment. Final statistical evaluation was performed with Statistica 5. Significant difference (t = -3,154, p< 0.05) for APF between experimental (mean 9.07 Hz) and control group (mean 10.33 Hz) was found in the initial EEG assessment. In addition, APF increased after just one alpha neurofeedback session in both groups (in CF patients, t = -5,226, p< 0.05). The psychological assessment in patients with cystic fibrosis revealed neurotic profile, while the score for depression was below the cutoff for its manifestation.
These findings indicate that computer-assisted evaluation can support the process of successful estimation and treatment of depression in CF patients. However, being a pioneering study in this field, further investigations are recommended
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The objective of this study was to comp are the data from Amsterdam Neuropsychological Test (ANT) and Emotional Continuous Performance Test (ECPT) between ADHD and normal adults. 57 ADHD (mean age = 37.4; SD = 9.29) and 46 healthy
(mean age = 25.6; SD = 7.90) subjects were included in the study. ANT was recorded during 10 tasks, whereby only two tasks we re analyzed: Face Recognition (FR) and Identification of Facial Emotions (IFE). The first task consisted of three parts (frontal,
profile and upside-down faces) recognizing the unfamiliar faces with varied mapping condition. The second task comprised the re
cognition of facial expressions: happy, sad, angry and feared faces. ECPT in troduced by Meier, Müller & Kropotov, was
given as a part of stimuli presentation protocol for evoked potentials and was recorded simultaneously with the 19 channel EEG. The ADHD group made more errors, showed a greater response time and larger variability of reaction time than the control group. Accordingly, this group showed more difficulties of dealing with complexity of face and facial expression

Characteristics of electroencephalographic alpha rhythm parameters in cystic fibrosis patients: Perspectives of neurofeedback
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha parameters that are specific for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and to focus on the perspectives of neurofeedback training in CF individuals. Between the sessions, an alpha increasing neurofeedback session was applied. Individual Alpha Peak Frequency (IAPF) and Individual Alpha Bandwidth (IABW) were investigated. Standard personality assessment and statistical tests (Statistica 5) were used for final evaluation. Results: Significant difference (t = 3,154, p < 0.05) for IAPF between experimental (mean 9.07 Hz) and control group (mean 10.33 Hz) was measured in the initial EEG assessment. In addition, IAPF increased after one alpha neurofeedback session in both groups (in CF patients, t = 5,226, p < 0.05). The psychological assessment in adolescents with cystic fibrosis revealed neurotic profile, while the score for depression was below cut-off for manifested depression. Conclusion: These findings indicate the negative psycho-emotional impact of CF. Neurofeedback can be successfully used to support CF patient’s capacity for self-management. Further investigations are needed for confirmation of these results
The role of QEEG in comprehensive classification of ADHD children. Proceedings of 2nd Neuromath Workshop
Quantitative computerized analysis of the EEG data (qEEG) is based on statistical analysis as a mean to compare one’s EEG features with normative EEG database. It is helpful additional diagnostic tool with significant clinical utility in many mental illnesses, especially in establishing EEG differences between ADHD and non-ADHD children. In our study we back-up this notion by confirming existence of five qEEG subtypes in ADHD children that were recently introduced by members of our team. Namely, we present 20 Macedonian children with ADHD, mean age 10.5±2.35 years, both genders. For each child qEEG data (in eyes open and closed conditions) were recorded, together with the continuous performance tests (CPT). Analysis showed that 45 % of the children belong to the fifth subtype (slow alpha excess), 30% to the first subtype (increased theta amplitude in the frontocentral cortex) and 25 % to the fourth subtype (over activated beta in frontal, central or parietal cortex)
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
