Adam Smith's four-stage theory provides the framework for his writings on history. The fourth stage is the commercial epoch; the culmination of history in this stage is a key component in the conventional interpretation of Adam Smith as a prophet of commercialism. In two historical case studies Smith shows the capacity of commercial society to regenerate itself. This potent capacity suggests that commercial society is inevitable. At a certain point in time it also overcomes the major obstacles to its permanence. Smith's philosophy of history anticipates the end of history views of Kant and Hegel.Political Economy,

Liesl Steinborn had a strong season. She went undefeated at a tournament; placed 4th out of 15 at Rural provincials to qualify for provincials with the top five wrestlers moving on. She then placed 6th at provincials. A strong showing for her. Andrea Harvey was very strong at all tournaments. She made all her opponents step up and compete as she had a quick start no matter how experienced her opponent was. She was a rookie who surprised a lot of wrestlers. She placed second out of 12 wrestlers at Rural Provincials winning a silver medal. Then went on to place fifth out of 15 at Provincials. Peter Waeckerlin surprised the provincial wrestling world last year by winning a bronze medal in provincials. This last season he was strong at all tournaments. He placed first out of 12 wrestlers at Rural Provincials winning a gold medal. At Provincials he placed third to win a bronze medal, narrowly missing out on a chance for a shot at the gold. He was ranked as the #1 wrestler in the province for most of the year in his weight class. He might have lost a couple matches, but was never beat. He was a strong wrestler who was very respectful of his opponents and represented his school very well. Our Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Year award was given to Peter Waeckerlin. Curling // There were two curling teams this year. The mixed team comprised of Keeley Miller, Cole Swarbrick, Karlee Martin and Thane Buckingham, won against Bow Island at Divisionals and moved on to Zones in Lethbridge. At Zones they placed third. The girls team, comprised of Sonja Mellema, Ashleigh Little, Jordyn Clarke and Jessi Young, had a bye at Divisionals and moved onto a great first appearance at Zones. 28 29 Sr. Boys Basketball// The SV Boys Basketball Team had another successful season, finishing with an overall record of 19 wins, 14 losses, and were League, Zone, and Provincial Consolation Finalists. We want to thank our Seniors Michael Johnson, Bradley Marsden, Tate Platt, Bradyn Mitchell, and Ashton Bekkering for their commitment and dedication to Rebels Basketball, and we look forward to our returning players next season; Granger Leth, Cole Layton, Denver Terry, Dylan Johnson, Denzel Gross, and Brett Andrus. 30 The SV Girls Basketball Team had another very successful season, finishing 3rd in the League before winning the Zone Banner for a 3rd consecutive year and finishing as Provincial Silver Medalists. We want to thank our Seniors Millay Johnson, Genna Wright, Jenna Nelson, Natalie Hoyt, and Rachel Jensen for their commitment and dedication to Rebels Basketball, and we look forward to our returning players next season; Lauren Steed, Langley Moser, Reagan Bailey, Kitawna Sparks, and Austen Robbins. After working with Diane Llewelyn-Jones on Annie she approached me with a solution. Do the show the way Myers had done it in 1975, have a school staff member play Tevye. In 75 Mr. Frank Sudol rose to the challenge of playing Tevye, in 2017 we were blessed to have our own very talented staff member Mr. Dale Friesen assume the mantle of Teyve. It seemed that Fiddler was destined to be produced at Myers at least one more time. This is not to say the play was not without its challenges. A significant technical hurdle had to be cleared when we were not able to recruit a pit band, and there is always the task of turning the gym into a theater for a 3 day run of the show. Thanks to an amazingly talented, and energetic production team Myers was able to provide a venue to show case the talents of sixty-two students. When we did Grease in 2007 I did not know what to expect, would students participate, would an audience come? It is as they say, “If you build it they will come.” Through the years Myers musicals have enjoyed tremendous support from the school body, and community at large, and I am very grateful for having the opportunity to play my part as a director, stage manager, lighting & technical director, and as with Fiddler, producer. Athletes had the opoortunity to attend tournaments in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. The Grade 9 athletes were very successful bringing home multiple 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes. Our two mixed doubles senior teams won the gold medal at zones in Medicine Hat. Shantelle Bennett, Dakota Huddlestun, Christian Manahan and Sophie Simek all attended provincials in Red Deer. st® TRAVEL CLUB This year the Travel Club used the Easter Holidays to travel to Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Italy, and The Vatican! travel club// We were gone a total of 11 days, and with the help of our tour guide Paolo, we walked over 83 kilometers! We went shopping in Prague, took a tour of the city, and tried some delicious food! After that, we drove to Munich and went to Dachau concentration camp for a sobering reminder of what not to let ever happen again. Afterwards, we visited the Palace in downtown After Munich, we travelled on to Austria and the Swiss Alps. There was a lot of snow and it reminded us of home! We drove up the mountain to see Neuschwanstein castle. It was like looking at something out of a story book! After a long, windy up hill climb on foot we were taken on a tour. It was breathtaking! Munich as well as having pretzels and schnitzel! We watched the Glockenspiel clock chime and walked around MarienPlatz. Our group made some lifelong friends with others that were on our bus-from Calgary, Quebec and Massachusetts! It truly was a trip of a lifetime! A tour of the city helped us understand where the Nazi regime started from and how the city dealt with Hitler during The Second World War. 44 TRAVEL CLUB BAND// The Concert and Stage Bands had a busy year. They performed at the Tri-School BBQ, Remembrance Day, Christmas Concert, Music of the Night Concert with Museaus (string quartet), Graduation, for Taber Day Care and the Year End Concert. The Concert Band also hosted the Dr. Hamman Grade l'sto show them all of the different instruments.. The Bands travelled to Calgary on April 27-29, 2017. They performed at two schools, participated in a music clinic, went to see Roger and Hammersteins' Cinderella and also saw the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra perform music from Elton John, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Paul McCartney and ended the trip by playing laser tag. BAND// 52 STUDENT LIFE 53 sllliisiii^^^ The SV team won the Tier 3 banner and also provincials for a 2nd year in a row! 'fil^M S.V. Girls Rugby// W.R. Myers rugby SV program was once again another successful season. We hosted our own inaugural SV pre-season tournament, bringing teams from Alberta and a Touring Side from Ontario. We went 4-0 in that festival. We also took the team to our first COUGAR CLASSIC tournament in Red Deer, where we took second place with a 3-1 record losing in the final. 54 South zone HERin girls' RUGBY " The JV season was successful once again. This rugby program that aims to develop fundamental rugby skills and to learn the complicated game of rugby was well received by the girls. The team's record was as even as it gets - winning exactly half of the games in both tournaments as well as league play. The team was young this year, but that was not at all shown in their courage, work ethic, and willingness to succeed. Well done on the season ladies! .V. Girls Rugby// 55 Our track and field team was small but very competitive. Unfortunately the weather was not very cooperative for our divisional and zone meets. Our athletes put in their best effort and were very successful. Cody Stange was the aggregate champion for Grade 9 Males and placed 4th in the 100 and 200m races at Zones. Dylan Johnson defended his zone title in the 3000m race which qualified him for provincials in Edmonton. li^W Abbey Allred Ty Anderson Favorite Class: Propably art because of the independence, but I loved all my teachers. How Might Adam Smith Pay Professors Today?

    No full text
Adam Smith’s proposal for paying professors was intended to induce increased faculty knowledge. If students have imperfect information about what they learn, and universities can only imperfectly measure the input of faculty time in student learning, publications may be used to measure faculty knowledge. If professors’ ability to publish is positively related to their ability to produce student learning, which universities can imperfectly measure, publications may be necessary to attract more able professors. Since research signals faculty knowledge, schools that do not value publications per se could require higher publication standards and pay higher wages than schools that value only publications.

If you were to ask any one of our students, past or present, they would all answer W.R. Myers is the art of fun. Myers school spirit and loyalty always shines through on our annual Fun Day at the park. The grades compete against one another in a medley of fast-paced events ranging from the “Ghetto Van Cram” to the true test of inferiority, “War Games”, and even included a giant water fight to end the annual episode. The day was dedicated to our bold football team, but that didn’t mean they were the only ones having a blast. The Grade 12’s swept the days’ events and won the school flag which is a most prestigious event. Participation was great from all ends. The Grade 9’s were naturally a bit shy but soon got into the swing of things just in time to give the higher grades a run for their money in the final events. All-in-all, everyone, staff and students alike, will leave Myer’s knowing that the true “Art of Fun” is not a picture, object or skill, but a feeling of common bonding and pride like the school spirit that thrives at Myers. 8 These pages are dedicated to the students of W.R. Myers for without them there would be no student life. Student life means different things to different people. To some, it is sneeking down to the cafeteria to grab a quick snack, while to others it’s sleeping on the student couch during spare time. Whatever it is, it’s become an important part of every school day. It gives W.R. Myers character so as we look back at our years here we will have more to remember than tests and essays. We will also remember that this was the year we made student life into “A Work of Art”. It was a great success and was the first dance at Myers to include Grade 9 and the new “no shoes” policy. This regulation was installed because the gym floor was recently refinished. Therefore, it was nick-named the Barefoot Bash. The Hallowe’en dance was also a lot of fun for the students and many of them dressed up. Our music and D.J. for the dances at Myers are supplied by Evan How. He brings in his own system and helps make our dances the big successes they are. Clockwise from Top Left: Coralee Kunz and Gina Belcastro; the Phantom of the Opera and sidekick teddy; Melanie, is that you under all that green? Besides Myers, Grassy Lake, Vauxhall, Hays, and Enchant were invited. Coats were checked in at the door and we even got to keep our shoes on. A live band, The Peace Dogs, was hired from Calgary. The music was loud and heavy. Some appreciated that more than others. While we were in our silks and tuxes, they wore ripped jeans and spandex. Clockwise from Top Left: The only Santa that showed up at the dance? Are you having fun yet, Kami? Mike, what are you hiding under the table? Shirley, Rachelle, and Pam at their best. Dawn, what are you drinking? 14 * November 23 and 24, 1990 heralded a momentous occasion for the students and staff of W.R. Myers High School. For only the second time ever, we hosted the 3A PROVINCIAL boys volleyball championships. Any time a school hosts a provincial championship of any kind, it provides the school with a tremendous opportunity to showcase its student spirit, staff involvement and school team expertise. We had that opportunity at this event and exhibited, in all areas, a school that we can be proud of. Our tournament chairman is a former staff member and a dynamic individual, Ms. Debbie Sargeant. Debbie is an organizer extraordinaire, and the success of the tournament was due in large part to her super effort. Our staff got involved in the logistics of such a major undertaking right down to the last person. They were enthusiastic, supportive, and showed a pride in our school that only good staffs can demonstrate. They were also a significant reason why this event was such a success. Our student body supported the tournament and our team for the week leading up to and the days of the Provincial. They came in numbers, made more noise than I’ve heard at a volleyball match in this school in a long time, and were a major reason why I felt so satisfied along with my players at the end of the tournament. Our team came to play this weekend. They played their best ball in 3 years, of what was for all of them, their graduation year. They played in the best matches of the tournament, and provided every team they played with their toughest competition. The final results were as follows: Round Robin: First: Second: Semi-Finals: Pool A Myers High School Drumheller Pool B Fort McMurray Wetaskiwin Wetaskiwin 2, Myers 1 Drumheller 2, Fort McMurray 0 Bronze Medal Match: Myers 2, Fort McMurray 0 Gold Medal Match: Wetaskiwin 2, Drumheller 0 I have coached volleyball at Myers for 16 years, and this Provincial ranks as one of the best, if not THE best of them all, due in no small part to the great support from everyone from fans to committee members. Provincials is a prestigious event, and we pulled it off with flying colours. From Top to Bottom: Our Myers Provincial Volleyball team. Wetaskiwin, the 1st place team. Back Row, Left to Right: Wendy Harris, Jennifer Burgess, Michelle Fournier, Melissa Fraser, Sandra Reti, Chad Gough Front: Gordie Schneider, Denise Mikalson, Ryan Hendricks Missing: Dave Larson, Lisa McNamara This year we did not pick the theme “A Work of Art” solely to give credit to Myers talented artists, but also because art can reflect the 1991 school year at Myers. Any work of art is a skilled composition filled with color, brilliance, vitality, and a splash of the unexpected. At Myers you’ll find that everyday and each activity is filled with all sorts of flare and energy. We as editors hope you appreciate these elements and reflect upon them. We would like to extend our appreciation to Jim Saunders, Brandon Bly, Dave Shritt, and all members of the Journalism class for making this year “A Work of Art.” A^^U^^ 16 CLU0S organisationsI found it a great pleasure to be president of the Students’ Council. We found it to be a big responsibility to fulfill our commitment to the students. We had good times and some heated arguments. This year was our thirty-seventh anniversary; and, thanks to the great support from members and advisors, we made it a success. 19 MYERS MUSIC The 1990-1991 year was an exciting year for the W.R. Myers Music Program. The Myers Music Association purchased 45,000 in new equipment. This new equipment replaced old and damaged equipment that was used by the program. This year also saw the band tour California during the Easter break. The band performed at Disneyland and the Disneyland Hotel as guests of the Disney Corporation. It was decided that this year’s celebration would encompass two days: a senior dinner and dance on May 24 and a cap and gown ceremony on June 26, after the last exam. These events both required the committee to meet once a week to make decisions on a variety of things such theme, music, invitations, decorations, etc. All of this takes time, patience and commitment. We would like to thank the graduating class for their support in the new format and wish next year’s committee good luck. We went to Medicine Hat to a three-school conference to get our ideas. We then had our meetings. We had many ideas proposed for the year; however, only a few were carried out. We had a starve-a-thon on January 18-19 to raise money. We gave certificates to Checkstop to give to people who were caught not drinking and driving. We also entered a float in the parade. There were many displays present including those of various groups and individuals. An industrial arts class had a display and a Book Fair was present in which anyone could adopt a book and donate it to the W.R. Myers Library. Some of the students from Art classes 10, 20, and 30 had art for sale. No matter what your taste in art, you were bound to find it among the many different pieces of work done by these students. A talent show ranged from a “Salute to the Troops” dance (Sharia Nishida, Lisa Smith, Larissa Collett and Kim Hart) to vocal selections (Becki Gough and Angela Jensen) to an acting solo from Thornton Wilder (Darcea Murphy). Also displaying their talents were Cara Garrett with an oral interpretation, Joseph Anderson on the piano, and Kent Pryor with a clarinet solo. As incentive to attend the art show, a $100 door prize was offered to students who attended. Patricia Wright was the lucky winner of the evening. This season the team finished in second place in the Tier IH division of the Southern Alberta High School Football League. The team’s season was highlighted by victories over St. Mary’s, Kate Andrews, and High River, as well as a close loss to Winston Churchill. In playoff’s, the Rebels soundly defeated St. Mary’s again before losing a hard fought game to Raymond in the league’s Tier III final. Raymond, as well as Cardston, and L.C.I., went on from the league to win provincial championships in their respective tiers. Another highlight for the team was the selection of Jeff Thurston as a league all-star at the defensive tackle position. Jeff also won an honorable mention on offensive line along with Jared Bly (defensive back), Ryan Buck (running back and linebacker), and Randy Oliver (receiver). Throughout the season, the Rebels continued to improve and to mature with experience. Many key roles were played by returning players and it appears the Rebels will be back in contention next year. This year’s team also sees the graduation of many players whose leadership and examples will be missed. Joining the coaching staff this year was Wayne Pallett. Despite the downs, the girls continued to improve their skills and maintain their enthusiasm. Because of their consistent efforts, they had more victories at the end of the season. Several of the Grade 9 and 10 players also played on the senior team. The seniors had a very busy schedule. Like the juniors, the seniors practiced every day from the end of August to the beginning of November. Besides playing in league games every Tuesday, the team competed in tournaments every weekend throughout the season. Although the girls competed well in tournaments, they never placed first. With regard to the zone playoffs in Cardston, the team came close to defeating McCoy High School from Medicine Hat in the semi-finals; McCoy ended up going to provincials. The senior team will be losing five players since they will be graduating. We coaches and the remaining players wish these people all the best. Those who will be coming back should form a strong base for next year’s team. FROM THE TOP . . MYERS VOLLEYBALL B STRAIGHT Back Row: Coach Del Cleland. Brad (Bodsy) Bodnar, Kevin (Cliffy) Easthope, Darren (Vegas) Fawns, Donel Platt. Front Row: Chad (Einstein) Bryant, Sam Anderson (J. V.), Chris (Beela) Abela, Troy (Pem) Cleland, Jordie Beagler (J.V.) The 1990 Myers Saints volleyball season concluded a four year effort to re-establish boys’ volleyball. The seven players that constituted this year’s team were what remained of the 12 players that started in Grade 9. Making this team competitive has not been easy; they are an odd combination of talent and mental attitude, but the team all stuck it out. Our team became consistent, focused, and it all paid off in a provincial bronze medal. I remember walking in with the team at the opening ceremonies in front of our own school; the frustration of our first game; beating Drumheller in a two-hour match; the tightest game the team played during the semis against Wetaskiwin; re-grouping to easily win against Fort McMurray for the bronze; and hearing about all the fun the team had at the post-season party. Competitive athletics teaches you a lot about yourself, whether you know it or not. Each and every one of the players will go down on my list as individuals who learned from me and taught me at the same time. As a coach, I thank you for your dedication to my ideals and your commitment to finish what you started. This year brings a renewal to the Junior Varsity program for Boys’ Volleyball under first-year coach Shaun Boyle. The team consisted of players ranging from Grades 9 to 11 who were playing high school ball for the first time. The team finished first in

ADAM SMITH'S VIEW OF HISTORY: CONSISTENT OR PARADOXICAL?

The conventional interpretation of Adam Smith is that he is a prophet of commercialism. The liberal capitalist reading of Smith is consistent with the view that history culminates in commercial society. The first part of the article develops this optimistic interpretation of Smith's view of history. Smith implies that commercial society is the end of history because 1) it supplies the ends of nature that he identifies; 2) it is inevitable; and 3) it is permanent. The second part of the article shows that Smith has some dark moments in his writings where he seems to reject completely such teleological notions. In this more civic humanist mood he confesses that commercial society does not supply the ends of nature, nor is it inevitable, nor is it permanent. Both views exist in Smith and the commentator is forced to choose between passages in Smith's work in order to support a particular interpretation of the former's view of history.Political Economy,

Later, two old barrack buildings were moved on to the school grounds. One was used as an industrial arts building and the other as a gymnasium. Eventually, the gymnasium became the Cranford Community Hall while the other building is now used as the school division maintenance shop. In the 1950’s two gymnasiums were built, along with the junior high portion of the complex. Students moved into the new building during the 1960-61 school year and the name For more information on football look to page 64 changed to W.R. Myers High School. Mr. Myers had served for many years as a trustee on the board of the Taber School Division. As the numbers in high school increased two more wings were added: the industrial wing in 1963, and the home economics/business education wing in 1967. In 1981 it was decided that W.R. Myers should be split into separate junior and senior high schools. The junior high was called Taber Junior High until it was renamed in honor of Don A. Ferguson. In 1990, Grade 9 students became part of the high school. For a better look at pep rallies see page 4 Opinions Page 2 --------- F Students Speak Out! If you won the lottery, what would you do with all that money? “Depending on the amount, probably give some to family and friends, then buy a nice car, new clothes and save the rest.” Laura Odland - Gr. 11 (Left). “I’d buy myself a car, two new wardrobes and save the rest for an early retirement so I could travel the world and stay extra long in Jamaica, find myself a handsome companion and live happily ever after.” Trina Meadows Gr. 11 (Right). What's your ideal vehicle? “1993 Ford 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 5-speed 460 motor, cab and a half, short box with tinted windows and a wicked black paint job." Michael Kemick - Gr. 11 (Left). “1968 Malibu, because it's an original muscle car.” Chad Clarke - Gr. 11 (Right). What was your first impression of Myers High School and how has it changed? “I thought it would be all play and no work, also a time to get to know more people. I soon found out that it’s a lot of work without a lot of free time.” Danna Madison - Gr. 9 (Left). “Before, I thought this school was big! I was also nervous to be the youngest in the school now I realize Myers is small and it’s not so bad being the youngest. I also thought it would be easy — what a joke!” Kristi Engleson Gr. 9. What was your first impression of Myers High School and how has it changed? “I thought it would be easy going and not such hard work, but now I know I have to work hard to get anywhere and it’s teaching me a good lesson on my first report card." Brad Jensen - Gr. 9. “Before school started I thought it would be hard to find my way around, also I thought the classes would be way harder than they are. Now I could probably walk around the school blindfolded.” Tracy Burns - Gr. 9. Opinions Page 3 If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose? Why? “In a house along the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach golf course, because I love golf!” Chris Madsen - Gr. 10 (Left). “On a mountain, in a cabin by a big clean lake, where I own a lot of land. I love to live where I can go outdoors and do anything outside. I like to fish and hunt so all I have to do is to walk outside and there it is. I love being outdoors!” Brent Stuckart - Gr. 10 (Right). What’s your ideal vehicle? “1993 GMC Z71 off road 4x4 with a 10 disc CD player under the seat and the best tape player for the dash. Also loaded with AC and all other luxuries.” Eric Zilinski - Gr. 10 (Left) What’s your best excuse for not having your homework done or for not goint to class? “I don’t need an excuse, I’m bigger than you!” John Tschrit-ter - Gr. 10 (Right). What advice would you give to future high school students? “Play sports, have fun, and do your homework. In sports you’ll make lots of friends, and have fun or you’ll be bored for 3 years. Do your homework so you will graduate in 3 years, not 4.” Rhonda Lent - Gr. 12. “Start high school by getting good grades in Grade 10 and keep on getting them throughout high school so you don't end up like me and have to come back for another year of Grade 12.” Jonathan Bennett - Gr. 12. What do you like about our school? “I like the stairs in the school and the fact that there is absolutely no heat in the 1949 building. I guess it is supposed to keep us awake.” Mark Appleton - Gr. 12 (Left). “My dad is the principal!” Michael Johnson - Gr. 12 (Right). Journalism Page 16 This year the yearbook has been a challenge for me, but a good challenge. This yearbook is a book of memories for you to look back on. Working on the yearbook is very rewarding, but it requires a lot of work. Meeting deadlines, finding the right pictures, writing copy, etc. is not all that easy at times, but we made it. I would like to thank Mrs. Klemen for all the help she gave us and Dave Schritt from the Taber Times, who lent us his negatives. Also, thanks to my fellow students in journalism class. It is a year full of anticipation of what the future holds for us all. We are busy deciding which university or college we want to go to, meeting application and scholarship deadlines as well as studying for all the hard exams that are creeping up in June. Some of us may decide to take a break from school and try working and living on our own, away from our parents. As we look back, we see many friendships and memories obtained throughout our years in school. Our senior year entails many hard hours of school and homework, but rest assured we still find time to go out and have fun. We are making this our best year yet! Not so often seen during class, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Angie’s smile during noon. Jennifer Martin, Krissy Shewchuk, and Tracey Chapple caught wandering the halls during class. Prom Grads Page 18 Top to Bottom: Beckie, how'd you get so lucky as to get Derek to be your walking partner? You look good together! Aren’t you glad that it’s finally over, Rhonda? This year's graduation theme is "A Whole New World”: and, when you think about it, it really is. In a very real sense, we are leaving one phase of our life and entering into an entirely new one. No matter what path we take from here, we will be faced with many important decisions and a lot more responsibility to accompany them. Just because things are going to change, though, it doesnoi'necessarily mean that life will get easier. And it is not meant to be. It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin' Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much. On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to the profession I love and shaped who I have become. At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality! Take care, Ken Pon Principal Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient. Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient: Have the courage to be imperfect Take time for yourself Sign up for that course, join that club Be active every day in as many ways as you can Spend time with people who make you feel good Laugh out loud each day Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat) Do one thing now that you've been putting off Focus more on things you can control Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/) Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on this decision (love it/dislike it etc). A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor, Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook. Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases, does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. But very thankfully, and in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport. The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football, volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of dedication to High School Sport! Myers Concert and Stage Bands were unable to perform this year due to COVID, but we were lucky enough to still be able to play our instruments. Vince Gassi, a composer from Toronto, was commissioned by the W.R. Myers Band Parent Association to write a piece for the Concert Band. The band students met with Mr. Gassi via Zoom in October to talk to him about the piece and the writing process. He completed the piece for us in January and we began working on it. Again the band students met with Mr. Gassi on Zoom for him to listen to us play and give feedback. But unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions, we were unable to premier the piece. I am grateful for all of the students and staff who actively participated in the numerous events and activities throughout the year. We have come together to support one another and as a group, accomplished more than any of us could have achieved on our own. The beginning of the 2021-2022 school year was full of excitement. We returned to school mask-free! Seeing everyone's smiling faces (almost everyone...) was super exciting to see! To start the year off strong, we had Mr. Bowes share some 'words of wisdom' and Mr. Scott Petronech introduce himself as our new Principal in our school-wide assembly. In December, W.R Myers sent two teams of grade 9 students to the cardboard boat races at the University! Lethbridge. This was the first competition since 201 9. Student participation in our Halloween dress-up event this year was phenomenal! It was SO FUN to see all of the amazing costumes! Characters from Scooby Doo to Sally (from the Nightmare Before Christmas) to Hippy Twins....we had it all!! Did you know? Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2 000 years ago, in the areas that are now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. Happy Celtic New Year! W.R. Myers has been incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing into our classrooms and lives as we work towards Truth and Reconciliation's calls to action. September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. As a school community (along with DA Ferguson) we were fortunate to have Elder Charlie Fox, of the Kainai First Nation (which is part of the Blackfoot Confederacy) share with us some history of his tribe's culture and tradition. The dancers then showed us some different selections of Hoop dancing, drumming and singing. It was an incredible experience for everyone! 18 BUILDING CONNECTIONS T ill Another amazing speaker was Chief Cadmus Delorme. He is from the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan and is one of the youngest Chiefs in Canada. We learned about the importance of connection to one another (family members and friends). He also shared how Elders would teach the younger generation (through the use of oral traditions and storytelling), many important life lessons. Many of these light-hearted stories taught different wisdoms through humor and would weave wild animals into the tale. He also touched on the atrocities of residential schools, and how familial bonds were broken when Indigenous peoples were forced to attend the schools. A highlight was his 3 year old boy who made the trip with him! What a cutie! Chief Delorme made this trip to Taber to help form connections with the Taber Police Force and Indigenous Allies in our community. 19 MOW* Awards HQI^GFfHr. rebels REBELS The W.R. Boulet's organ donation prompted the largest amount of Canadians to register as organ donors in history. 1 50,000 individuals registered in the days and weeks following the crash, beginning the Logan Boulet Effect. Green shirt day is a reminder of how important it is to Stand Together in times of tragedy and discuss the importance of organ donation. FOR MENTAL HEALTH WRM Staff and Students - YOU ROCK! Your participation is just one small way that you can show someone you care! AM On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, students and staff at W.R. Myers were invited to take part in Hats On! For Mental Health. Hats On! Is a provincial initiative that encourages students and staff in all schools to wear a hat to help raise awareness of the importance of positive mental health. Students and staff participated by wearing hats and engaging in conversations that focused on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illness. ®OTG Headstrong is a student led initiative that aims to end the stigma around mental health. Headstrong is Canada's only National 'evidenced based' mental health youth leadership program. I The Headstrong team met every Tuesday at lunch from November to May to discuss mental health stigma and how to implement many® the awesome ideas throughout the school. < They initiated the Christmas locker decorating contest to "spread happiness when it's not always happy." They were involved in pink floa- ay, a way to treat students and staff while promoting their anti bullying message. The largest project they took on was during mental ealth week. Everyone looks forward to our annual ski trip, so if you have never gone, next year is your year, don't miss out! Did you know? Castle Mountain has been in operation for 55 years! Castle Mountain offers much more than just snow-skiing. Check out www.skicastle.com for more information about what Castle Mountain has to offer year-round! aS HIKING IN.... Mr Bowes and Mrs Ressler got to take 1 8 students to Waterton in June. They hiked to Crandell Lake where they enjoyed a nice lunch and a view of the mountains. Afterwards the group went exploring in town where they enjoyed some ice cream and shopping. To top off the trip they finished off at Cameron Falls. It was a memorable trip for many! 3010ML. Tim Luchanski joined WRM in the fall of 1 993. Luch taught Science 10, Biology 20 and 30 and various options throughout his tenure here. 28.5 years later Luch has traded in his fetal pigs for a life of leisure! When one thinks of Luch, everyone would agree he has left a legacy! Whether it was his skeleton donning a housecoat or a thong, or the mountain of gum (which has since found a new home) - his sense of humor couldn't be beat! But most important was his incredible ability to always teach the curriculum with a fierce intensity that truly captivated his student audience! He had an amazing ability to instill the desire to learn in each and every one of his students. Not only learn, but do their very best! He loved his curriculum and he loved teaching it to the student of WR Myers. Did you know? Luch also had a fierce love of baseball. He coached for many years, but he was also a phenomenal player in his younger years - he competed in the "Little League Baseball World Championships" on more than one occasion! Noel Kehler started at WR Myers in the Fall of 1 998, but began teaching years a few earlier in Warner. For the most part, during her 24 years at Myers Noel taught English and Textiles. Did yo/j know? She also taught Art as well. Noel had a love of English literature that she passed on to many students. Her commitment to growing the Textiles program was second to none! Her skill and passion for anything textiles related showed in the vast array of projects students worked on (quilts, crocheting, hoodies, stuffed animals, pin cushions (Voodoo dolls)-you name it, she could teach it! Did you know? She even helped a student make her own Graduation dress! Mrs. Kehler also held a Sewing Club after school for many years where anyone of any age to could come and learn the basics of sewing. Anyone of any age meant even elementary students joined in the fun! Our many high school musicals over the years would be be lost without her devotion to being lead Costume Designer - take a look after our most recent cast from Fiddler on the Roof - it is important to note that almost everyone had more than 1 costume change, maybe even 3 or 4 in some cases! She put her heart and soul into ensuring the costuming in each and every musical was spot on for the time period! Rebel of the Decade - Greg Bowes is not retiring, but has sought greener pastures in his new role of Vice-Principal at DA Ferguson. Mr. Bowes joined the team here at WR Myers in 2010. During his time here he has taught all levels of Phys Ed classes. Science 14-24, CALM, Math 1 0-3 and various options. He has also been our Athletic Director for over 8 years and VP for the last 3 years. He has always been a favorite among the students because of his passion in the Gym. More often than not, Bowes was the go-to person to drive the bus to many different sporting events (regular season games. Zones, Provincials) - you name it, he was right there - either coaching or cheering everyone on to do their very best! His passion often times went beyond sport. He even tried his hand at high school musicals, where he picked up small roles when needed. His love of music also meant he chaperoned band trips as well! Did you know? Mr. Bowes is an accomplished violin player and also plays the piano as well! Mr. Bowes you will be missed, the staff and students at DAF are gaining a huge as
