Hydrological processes at Inle Lake (Southern Shan State, Myanmar) inferred from hydrochemical, mineralogical and isotopic data<sup>†</sup>
A one-year hydrochemical and isotopic monitoring was conducted at the Inle Lake, the second largest lake in Myanmar, also considering sediment samples. Lake waters are characterised by low electrical conductivities (236–489 μS/cm), neutral to alkaline pH (7.36–9.26), oxidising Eh (329–457 mV) and Ca–Mg–HCO3 facies. Stable isotopes indicate that lake waters are only slightly affected by evaporation, are fully flushed yearly and are not stratified. Carbonate equilibria dominate the lake water hydrochemistry. In summer, photosynthetic activity and temperature increase induce calcite precipitation, as testified by its high content in the sediments, up to 97 %, and by its isotopic composition. The short residence time and endogenic calcite precipitation likely prevent the accumulation of contaminants and nutrients in lake waters. This study suggests a high resilience of the system to anthropogenic disturbances and demonstrates the sediment potential for the reconstruction of the environmental evolution in time and for the anthropogenic impact assessment.</p
CCD polarimetry as a probe of regions of recent star-formation
Chapter 1 of this thesis details the incorporation of a Charged Coupled Device (CCD) detector system with the Durham Imaging Polarimeter. The details include the physical characteristics of the device and the electronics and software associated with the device control and data storage. The introduction of the CCD detector system haa made necessary the inclusion of a super-achromatic half-wave plate in the polarimeter which has an inherent variability in its optic axis. Chapter 2of this work describes fully how suitable corrections for this effect can be made, and derives "first order" results. The CCD performance is examined in comparison with the detector used previously and hence the veracity of the new results is established. Chapter 3 is a relevant summary of the status of the astronomy of the immediate regions of recent star-formation. Chapter 4 describes multicolour polarimetry of NGC2261/R Mon covering the period 1979 to 1986. The data conclusively proves that the polarisation of R Mon must be due to effects close to R Mon (~ 14 astronomical units). This is evident because of the dynamic timescale of the variations of the polarisation of R Mon and the anomalous band of polarisations seen across the head of the nebula. The interpretation presented is an extension of the Elsasser and Staude (1978) method of polarising objects embedded within the confines of a nearly edge-on disk. Detailed polarisations within the main nebula body provide evidence for this extended interpretation and also for an extensive helical magnetic field which may extend into the disk. Also it is seen that R Mon must still be "shrouded" in material preventing light from directly reflecting in the main nebula body. It is not thought that the variations in the region close to R Mon are due to planetary bodies but to accretion from the disk. The results of this re-interpretation of the polarising mechanism are tentatively applied to other similar objects
Mineralogical and geochemical characterisation of alkaline lake sediments to trace origin, depositional processes, and anthropogenic impacts: Inle Lake (Southern Shan State, Myanmar)
Southeast Asia contains a major portion of wetland areas of international significance, but only 14% of these wetlands are under protection. Inle Lake is the second largest freshwater body in Myanmar and the most important for its environmental, economic, and agricultural values. However, the lake is seriously threatened by anthropic activities as they are dramatically decreasing its open water surface. While water-quality studies have assessed the presence of nutrients and contaminants, little is known about the sediment quality. Therefore, the overall objective of the present study was to analyse the natural sedimentation patterns and the anthropogenic disturbances in this lake. To this end, both grab and core sediments were investigated by combining mineralogical, morphological, and geochemical analyses, and their composition was compared to the composition of rocks and soil from the watershed. Mineralogical data indicate that sediment samples collected at or near the main inflow, and at the outflow show a lower abundance (about 43%) of calcite, which generally increases with depth in sediment cores, reaching more than 90% in the centre of the lake. Lower calcite contents correspond to higher percentages of other minerals. These findings allow us to clearly distinguish the allogenic (quartz, mica/illite, kaolinite, and detrital calcite) from the endogenic (mostly calcite) minerals, as confirmed by the soil and rock mineralogy. The origin of the mineral contents at the different sites is further supported by the observation of the grain morphology and composition. The most abundant metal in the lake sediments is Ca, in agreement with the high calcite content. Following in order of abundance are Al, Fe, and K, which are connected to the detrital input to the lake. In the rock and soil samples, the most abundant trace element is Mn, which is significantly correlated with many other trace elements (e.g., Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, Zn, and As), suggesting their common lithogenic origin. Similarly, in the lake sediments, the trace elements Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, and As display fairly homogenous concentration ranges, in the order of tens of ppm, and are strongly correlated with the detrital minerals (mica, kaolinite, and quartz) and negatively correlated with the calcite content. The mineralogical and elemental distribution in the lakebed area and with depth in the sediment cores allowed us to identify the increased soil and bedrock erosion as a major anthropogenic impact to the lake. The sedimentation disturbance is especially evident at the main inflow, the Nanlit stream, which has caused the development of a large alluvial fan, visible in satellite images. This large sediment
input is likely to have accelerated the decrease in open water surface and in depth of this shallow lake. Additionally, when the measured concentrations of Potentially Toxic Elements were compared to consensus-based Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), it was shown that As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn often exceeded the threshold effect concentration (TEC), and that Cr, Ni, and Pb sometimes exceeded the probable effect concentration (PEC). On the other hand, Enrichment Factors (EFs), calculated with respect to soils of the watershed, showed minimal enrichment and indicated that the potential toxicity effect was primarily a result of detrital sedimentation outpacing carbonate sedimentation. Sediment characterisation allowed us to obtain a better understanding of lake dynamics and environmental impacts, which is fundamental in achieving effective management and maintenance of the ecological character of Inle Lake, in line with the objective set by the Ramsar Convention.

Geochemical, mineralogical and isotopic investigation of Inle Lake (Southern Shan State, Myanmar): preliminary results.
This paper reports some preliminary results obtained on waters and sediments from the Inle Lake. Carbonate equilibria dominate the lake water hydrochemistry. During the summer season, strong evaporation affects the water body, coupled to intense photosynthetic activity. These processes favour authigenic carbonate precipitation, as indicated by the high calcite content detected in the lake sediments. Isotopes of the water molecule indicate a residence time shorter than one year. The short residence time and calcite precipitation likely prevent the accumulation of anthropogenic contaminants and nutrients within the lake
Hydrochemical and isotopic features of the Khaung Daing hot spring (Inle lake, Southern Shan State, Myanmar)
The Inle lake watershed develops along a right-lateral strike-slip fault running parallel to the Sangaing fault, a major continental transform fault between the India and Sunda Plates. Located on the northwestern border of the Inle lake basin, the Khaung Daing hot spring outflows at a temperature of about 70̊C. This contribution represents a reconnaissance study of the spring and describes its main hydrochemical and isotopic features, compared to surface and ground waters in the watershed. The water pH is slightly acidic, and, compared to the other water samples from the watershed, shows an EC in the high range (57-1284μS/cm), the lowest pH and Eh values, and is Na-HCO3, whereas surface and ground waters are Ca(Mg)-HCO3 type. The hot spring isotopic composition falls close to the Yangon Meteoric Water Line, indicating that, despite its temperature, it is not strongly modified by water-rock interaction processes. Preliminary results suggest that this hydrothermal water is likely related to deep meteoric and ground water circulation within a fault zone, in a region characterized by an elevated geothermal gradient
Innovation and Performance in Myanmar Plastics Manufacturing Fims (Pan Hsu Myat Mon, 2022)
The purposes of this study are to examine the effect of personal and organizational factors on creativity, the effect of creativity on innovation, and the influence of innovation on performance of Myanmar plastics manufacturing firms. The study applies both descriptive and analytical methods to achieve study objectives. The survey results indicate that both personal and organizational factors have effect on creativity. Personal factors of creative self-efficacy and risk-taking are the most influencing on creativity. Also, organizational factors of structure and atmosphere are most effecting on creativity. The results of the study indicated that creativity has positive effect on innovation. Finally, innovation has positive effect on performance of the Myanmar plastics manufacturing firms. The study suggests that in order to foster performance, Myanmar plastics manufacturing firms should focus on innovation. Moreover, in order to increase innovation, creativity is the baseline
Challenges and Opportunities of using Role-players in Medical Education: Medical Educator’s Perspective

Role-players are trained to act specific roles in clinical situations and interact with medical students in the simulation of real-clinical scenarios. Educators used Role-players wisely especially in restricted situation of Covid Era. There are many opportunities in using Role-players such as creating clinical situation, practicing communication skill, cost-effectiveness, saving the time, comfortable learning environment for learners, encouraging studentsto learn. Aim:Current study aims to explore challenges and opportunities in roleplaying in medical education. Method:This is a reflective writing about the role-play in medical education. The authors reflect on their collective experiences with the review of literatures and describe their educational encounters in various aspects of challenges and opportunities of usingrole-players in medical education vividly. All authors have been involved in medical education for at least five years and have used role play to teach undergraduate students. The authors reflect on their role-playing experiences in various phases and modules, such as pre-clinical teaching, clinical case discussion, creative online clinical consultation, and clinical assessment studies. Several identified subject headings were used to group the common experiences, with an emphasis on addressing the challenges and opportunities in advancing the use of role-playing in medical education. The study search engine mage use of key points for its search such as, need for training of role-players, uncertain availability of role-players for certain teaching class and exams, need for specific age of role-players in definite clinical scenarios, some difficulties in recruitment of new role-players, preparation of clinical scenarios, student engagement, further collected information and data are descriptively stated. Conclusion:Modern educators are trying to improve the roleplaying education. By enhancing opportunities to useRole-players in medical education, the soft skills of medical students such as cooperation in teamwork, negotiation and persuasion can be upgraded. These skills are essential skill for medical students to contribute as a health care provider in community.The study summarises the numerous ways to overcome the challenges and highlighted that educators has significance role to make sure student receive all information of their task. This study brings out the value attached to clinical scenarios that are well prepared as a real-world event and suggests that reflection taken from role-players and students to improve future roleplaying class. This study contributes to enhancing emergency preparedness and response working as a part of role-playing education. The Study on the Foreign Direct Investment in Thilawa Special Economics Zone ( Aye Myat Mon, 2025)
The objective of this study is to examine the perceptions of foreign investors operating in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (TSEZ), Myanmar, with a focus on factors influencing their investment experience. A quantitative research method was employed using a structured questionnaire to collect data from participating investors. The study analyzed key dimensions such as economic conditions, infrastructure, institutional support, human capital, and location-related factors. Findings reveal that low costs and tax incentives are primary motivations for investment, while traditional media remains a dominant source of information. Investors report high satisfaction with the zone’s infrastructure, including transportation, communication, and energy supply. Economic conditions are perceived favorably, particularly in relation to cost of doing business. Institutional and human capital factors also receive positive feedback, notably regarding legal protections and workforce competencies. However, limited specialized training opportunities present a notable gap. Location-related elements, such as environmental sustainability and utilities, are well-regarded, although potential improvements in geographic advantage exist. The study suggests strengthening specialized workforce training and enhancing locational competitiveness to further boost investor satisfaction. These insights offer valuable implications for policymakers aiming to attract and retain foreign investment for sustainable economic development in TSEZ
An Analysis on Work Life Balance of NGO Workers in Myanmar (Myat Su Mon, 2021)
Work-life balance is the important factor now’s a day where people are facing
difficulties to find time to relax and to enjoy life. A descriptive method was applied to
determine the work-life balance of NGO workers in Myanmar. The objective of this
study was to identify the level of work-life balance, work and family conflict, job
satisfaction and work at stress among the NGOs’ employee and to find out the
relationship between socio demographic characteristics and the four factors. A total of
600 respondents were selected in study area via the web-based survey method. The
questionnaire included the availability of work-life balancing, work-life conflict, job
satisfaction, and stress of work. It was found that over half of the respondents satisfied
with the flexibility of working hours, and getting support from family. However,
some of the respondents were not satisfied with the training and workloads. There was
a positive significant correlation between work-life balance and job satisfaction, and
work-life conflict and stress at work. Moreover, there was the relationship between
marital status and stress at work and designation level and their job satisfaction.
Therefore, effective training programs and a healthy work environment should be
provided for capacity building and enjoy a more loyal and productive workforce in
order to create a better work-life balance
