Godwin shared Burke’s abhorrence of The Terror but wholly rejected his glowing defence of aristocracy. At first enthusiastic about the Revolution, Godwin made two lasting interventions into revolutionary debates, the theoretical treatise Political Justice and the novel Caleb Williams.....

Full text linkMary Shelley's Life of William Godwin is an incomplete biography of a major author of the Enlightenment by his daughter, a major Romantic author. The working title 'Life of William Godwin' was affixed some time ago by the Bodleian to a sheaf of papers dated 1835 to 1839, the majority in the handwriting of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, forming an 'unfinished' and 'abortive' biographical memoir of her late father. In July 1836, Godwin's widow Mary Jane signed a contract with publisher Henry Colburn [Bodleian, MS. Eng. lett. c. 461, fol. 153] for a two-volume 'Memoirs and Correspondence of the late William Godwin', to be written by Mary Shelley, who referred to it while it was in preparation as 'my Father's Life'. At this period, she was 'Mrs Shelley', widow of the poet Shelley, mother of the heir to a baronetcy and daughter of a famous but questionable marriage - that of Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, to William Godwin, author of An Enquiry concerning Political Justice. Emergent trends in the reported incidence of prostate cancer in Nigeria

We examined and integrated diverse trends in the age-specific incidence of prostate cancer into a comprehensive trend for Nigeria, and examined how best the existing data could generate a countrywide age-standardized incidence rate for the disease.Methods: Data were obtained from studies undertaken between 1970 and 2007 in referral hospital-based cancer registries. Records from at least one tertiary hospital in each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria were examined retrospectively. Data were also reported for the rural population in cross-sectional prospective studies. Age-standardized incidence rates and the annual incidence of disease were calculated.Results: Higher incidence rates for prostate cancer during this period were recorded for patients aged 60–69 years and 70–79 years, with a lower incidence rate for patients aged younger than 50 years. An exponential annual incidence rate of disease was observed in the 50–79 year age group and peaked at 70–79 years before dropping again at age 80 years. The results showed metastasis in more than half of these hospital-based prostate tumors.Conclusion: Our results suggest that prostate cancer occurs at a relatively young age in Nigerians and that hospital-based registry reports may not appropriately reflect the incidence of the disease in Nigeria. A countrywide screening program is urgently needed. Finally, the difference in reported stages of disease found in Nigerians and African-Americans versus Caucasians suggests biological differences in the prognosis. Nigeria may thus typify one of the ancestral populations that harbor inherited genes predisposing African-Americans to high-risk prostate cancer.Keywords: prostate cancer, annual age-standardized incidence rate, Nigeria cancer registr

According to the author, it is necessary to act in every circumstance for the good of all men, but also and above all, to open up to the closer union with the "human family". The whole point, then, is for Godwin to imagine a political form that allows the individual and local exercise of justice to have universal effects
William Godwin as a literary worker, 1756-1800
No full textThis paper focuses on the life of William Godwin as a literary worker in the latter part of the eighteenth century. With the publication of An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice in 1793, this author gained immediate fame. His prestige was increased with the publication of Caleb Williams one year later. Yet, within six short years, his reputation all but disappeared and his publications came to be regarded as literary waste. It is the purpose of the paper to show: 1) that William Godwin was unable to continue works of high quality after 1800 because of environmental pressure; 2) the influence of the market place upon many of his publications; 3) that his publishers controlled his future; 4) that this author desired neither the help of the publisher or patron, but strove for independence from both. In researching the paper, the writer studied original publications written by William Godwin prior to 1800. Although most of his original books are scarce, this writer benefited from works found at Memorial Library in Madison, Wisconsin; Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois; and through the inter-library loan system at Northern Illinois University. This latter service provided the most important material, the Abinger Collection of William Godwin\u27s Diary (MSS on Microfilm). This collection was graciously lent to Northern Illinois University by Duke University Library. This compilation of unpublished material allowed this writer to follow Godwin\u27s daily account of his life in these years. It provided the factual data showing William Godwin\u27s attempt to gain financial independence and his hatred for the control exerted by publishers
Clarification on the name-bearing type designation of several cyclophorid species (Mollusca, Gastropoda) by H. H. Godwin-Austen (1915)
Full text linkThe type series boundary and the name-bearing type designation of each cyclophorid taxon originally described by Godwin-Austen are clarified based on an interpretation that complies with the ICZN. Previous statuses of type specimens designated by previous authors are reconsidered. Lectotypes of Spiraculum oakesi Godwin-Austen, 1915, Spiraculum kempi Godwin-Austen, 1915, Pterocyclos aborensis Godwin-Austen, 1915, Pterocyclos miriensis Godwin-Austen, 1915, Pterocyclos brahmakundensis Godwin-Austen, 1915, Spiraculum luyorensis Godwin-Austen, 1915, Spiraculum putaoensis Godwin-Austen, 1915, and Theobaldius oakesi Godwin-Austen, 1915 are here designated to stabilize the existing nomenclature.
