Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Formalising and animating multiple instances in BPMN collaborations
The increasing adoption of modelling methods contributes to a better understanding of the flow of processes, from the internal behaviour of a single organisation to a wider perspective where several organisations exchange messages. In this regard, BPMN collaborations provide a suitable modelling abstraction. Even if this is a widely accepted notation, only a limited effort has been expended in formalising its semantics, especially for what it concerns the interplay among control features, data handling and exchange of messages in scenarios requiring multiple instances of interacting participants. In this paper, we face the problem of providing a formal semantics for BPMN collaborations including elements dealing with multiple instances, i.e., multi-instance pools and sequential/parallel multi-instance tasks. For an accurate account of these features, it is necessary to consider the data perspective of collaboration models, thus supporting data objects, data collections and data stores, and different execution modalities of tasks concerning atomicity and concurrency. Beyond defining a novel formalisation, we also provide a BPMN collaboration animator tool, named MIDA, faithfully implementing the formal semantics. MIDA can also support designers in debugging multi-instance collaboration models
BPMN 2.0 OR-Join Semantics: Global and local characterisation
Nowadays, the BPMN 2.0 notation is widely used both for modelling and implementing business processes. Even if it is largely adopted, the BPMN standard lacks a formal specification of models’ behaviour, leading to misinterpretations of the execution semantics of some tricky modelling elements. This may result in processes that do not fit with designers’ expectations and behave differently from one enactment tool to another. One of the most prominent BPMN elements with an ambiguous treatment in the BPMN standard is the OR-Join gateway. Although various attempts of OR-Join formalisation have been proposed in the literature, they either do not fully comply with the prescriptions of the current version of the BPMN standard or do not provide an efficient characterisation. To fill this gap, we propose a formalisation of the BPMN semantics including the OR-Join behaviour as reported in version 2.0 of the standard. Besides, to make it suitable for driving an efficient implementation, we provide an alternative characterisation of the formal semantics that determine the OR-Join gateway activation only based on information local to the considered OR-Join element, without the need of knowing the global tokens distribution. The soundness of the approach is given by demonstrating the correspondence of the local semantics to the global one. Through validation experiments conducted on the implementations of the local and global semantics of the OR-Join, we have shown that the local semantics more efficiently determines the gateway activation. Finally, we support designers in precisely understanding the OR-Join behaviour via a model animator tool
Well-structuredness, safeness and soundness: A formal classification of BPMN collaborations
The BPMN standard has a huge uptake in modelling business processes within the same organisation or collaborations involving multiple interacting participants. It is widely accepted by the Business Process Management community that a solid formal framework for the notation can help designers to properly understand their BPMN models as well as to state and verify model properties. With this aim in mind, we provide a formal characterisation of BPMN collaborations and some of the most significant correctness properties in the business process domain; namely, well-structuredness, safeness and soundness. We exploit this formalisation to classify BPMN models according to the properties they satisfy and their compositionality, resulting in a systematic study that gives evidence of expected results, closes conjectures and provides novel results. An experimentation to assess the impact of the considered properties on the practice of modelling is carried out on the BPMN models available in a public and populated repository
Salt Tolerance-Related Protein: a new protein involved in response to cold stress in Arabidopsis thaliana.
Salt tolerant-related protein (STRP), is a poorly characterized protein identified in a proteomic screen in Arabidopsis, resulted to be strongly increased after cold stress (Rocco et al., 2013). Protein structure and function are unknown, and just few information are available. It is involved in plant response to salt stress and knockout mutants are hypersensitive to this stress (Du et al., 2008). Recently has been highlighted that DEK3, a member of a protein family involved in chromatin remodeling, could interact with STRP (Waidmann et al., 2014).
In order to to clarify the physiological function of STRP and its role in the response to cold stress we performed genetic and biochemical studies, including reverse genetic, gene expression studies, and protein function analysis.
We generated Arabidopsis STRP-overexpressing plants by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, and we obtained Strp knockout mutants by the Nottingham Arabidopsis Stock Center.
Phenotypical analysis of overexpressing plants and strp knockout has been be carried out, and plant responses to cold stress (oxidative damage, membrane lipid modification, production of osmoprotectant solutes, cold-related gene expression) has been evaluated.
For biochemical studies, the STRP recombinant protein has been produced in Escherichia coli. This protein has been purified and used to obtain an anti-STRP polyclonal antibody By using anti-STRP antibody, we analyzed STRP protein in different cell compartments and we investigated the effect of cold stress on protein localization. Moreover, we evaluated the possible transcriptional (Real Time PCR), post-transcriptional (protein-synthesis inhibitors) or post-translational (proteasome inhibitors) regulation of STRP in stress conditions
Salt Tolerance-Related Protein: a new protein involved in plant adaptation to low temperatures.
Plants are constantly exposed to different environmental stresses such as extreme temperatures, high salinity, excess or lack of water, light and nutrients that strongly limit plant growth and significantly reduce crop yield. Plants exposed to environmental stress exhibit various phenotypic symptoms as poor germination, stunted seedlings, chlorosis, reduced leaf expansion and wilting. Plants respond with changes in their pattern of gene expression and protein products when exposed to these stresses. Thus, the ability to adapt has an impact on the distribution of the plant and crop yield.
Understanding the mechanism of stress tolerance and genes involved in the stress signaling network is important for crop improvement.
In a proteomic analysis of temperature stress-responsive proteins of Arabidopsis thaliana rosette leaves, an uncharacterized protein, known as salt-tolerant related protein (STRP), resulted to be strongly increased by cold treatment.
The aim of this work was to clarify the role of this protein in Arabidopsis response to cold stress.
By using polyclonal antibodies obtained against recombinant STRP protein, it was demonstrated that STRP is expressed in the cytosol but is also associated to the plasma membrane. Low temperature treatment greatly increased STRP levels in the cytosol and this effect was due to an enhanced protein stability rather than to activation of gene transcription.
Moreover, STRP knock out mutant showed increased susceptibility to oxidative damage induced by cold stress, as demonstrated by the higher levels of lipid peroxidation and ion leakage.
These results suggest that STRP may play a protective role in the plant response to cold stress
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
