The relationship of serum angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) level with the severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS)
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep disorder characterized by repetitive upper airway obstructions, hypoxia, reoxygenation, and arousals, in which there is no airflow in the mouth and nose despite respiratory effort during sleep. Free oxygen radicals formed in this repetitive process lead to an increase in cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity due to vascular endothelial dysfunction. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE); It is a zinc dependent dicarboxypeptidase. This enzyme is produced mainly in the lung and is found in the luminal portion of the endothelial cells of the pulmonary vessels. While catalyzing the conversion of Angiotensin 1 to Angiotensin 2, it plays a role in inactivating bradykinin and substance P, which are bronchoconstrictors and inflammatory mediators. ACE enzyme activity may change in pulmonary diseases accompanied by vascular endothelial damage. There is very little data from the Turkish population showing the relationship between the severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), apnea time, and serum Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). The aim of our study is to determine the relationship between Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and serum Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) with the data we obtained from the appropriate patient group using scientific methods. It is a prospective and cross-sectional study. A total of 90 people participated voluntarily. According to the volunteer PSG results, the patient group with OSAS was divided into the control group without OSAS. Volunteers consisted of patients who applied to Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Medical Faculty Hospital Chest Diseases Polyclinic with the suspicion of OSAS or who were suspected of OSAS from an external center for polysomnography (PSG) examination. PSG test was performed by inpatient overnight in the Sleep Disorder Unit. Before the test, gender, height, weight, BMI, smoking habit, history of chronic disease, contact information, and identity information were noted. The next morning after PSG, blood was taken from the patients for serum ACE, hemogram and biochemistry from venous blood. The mean serum ACE value of men in the OSAS group was 33.56±16.62 IU/L, the mean serum ACE value of women was 32.27±17.61 IU/L, the mean serum ACE value of the whole group was 32.92±16.98 IU/L calculated. The mean serum ACE value of men in the control group was 35.69±20.33 IU/L, the serum ACE value of women was 9.14±10.37 IU/L, and the serum ACE value of the whole group was 32.42±16.21 IU/L. In the group with OSAS, according to PSG results, it was severe in 34 (56.6%), moderate in 23 (38.3%), and 3 (5.1%) individuals. According to the severity of OSAS, mean serum ACE values were calculated as 35.14±18.93 IU/L for severe OSAS, 30.24±13.72 IU/L for moderate OSAS, 28.3±18 IU/L for mild OSAS. As the severity of OSAS increased, an increase in serum ACE value was observed, and there was no statistically significant difference. Serum ACE values in OSAS and control groups and serum ACE values between genders were compared and no statistically significant difference was observed. When the correlation between AHI and serum ACE values was made, no statistically significant difference was observed
Quantitative evaluation of computed tomography findings in patients with pulmonary embolism: the link between D-Dimer level and thrombus volume
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation of D-dimer levels and computed tomography properties of pulmonary embolism. METHODS: A total of 58 treated patients with diagnosis of properties of pulmonary embolism were retrospectively studied. All patients underwent a D-dimer blood test. In computed tomography images, septal angle, interventricular septal thickness, and the diameters of all cardiac chambers and pulmonary arteries were measured. The thrombus volume (load) and density at all pulmonary arteries (main, right, left pulmonary arteries, and segmental arteries) were calculated. RESULTS: A significant correlation was found between D-dimer and total thrombus volume (p=0.009, r=0.342). Total thrombus volume and total thrombus density were calculated with mean value of 23.40±60.63 ml and 66.16±38.48 hounsfield unit (HU), respectively. Right ventricle/left ventricle ratio showed positive correlation with the D-dimer level (p=0.02). CONCLUSION: Increased D-dimer levels with RV/LV ratio and their correlation with total thrombus volume suggest that it may be a prognostic factor. © 2021 Associacao Medica Brasileira. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
