A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams

    No full text
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Topic alignment between two texts is found to increase author verification precision, and an authors writing style is found to change over time, but not more significantly after 3 years than after 1 year.Information ArchitectureWISElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

    No full text
Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

Factors that motivate band members toward band competitions / Mohd. Zahrein Mustaffa

Marching band is a school's co-curriculum activity that involves playing music using different types and sizes of musical instruments. It involves marching drills and formations, which include military disciplines and techniques with synchronized steps. Annually, marching bands are involved in many events, for example participating and entertaining crowds during schools' sports day, National Day parade, cultural and floral parade and the most intense is band competitions. Currently, most secondary schools in Malaysia have their own marching band that represents the school's pride and joy. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that motivate secondary school band members in the Klang Valley toward marching band competitions using Walker's seven factors of motivation. This study was narrowed down to only one school in Klang Valley due to difficult procedure to obtain approval from other schools, the school studied is an all-boys school and The subjects for this study are students ranging from form 3 (aged 15) to form 5 (aged 17). A total of forty-eight (N= 48) secondary school band members participated in this study. Subjects were selected from one high school in the Klang Valley. Band members were in form 3, 4 and 5. There were fifteen (n = 15) form 3 students, nineteen (n = 19) form 4 students and fourteen (n= 14) form 5 students. All of the students are male, since the school that was studied was an all-boys school. A questionnaire was prepared for this study which consists 13 items that allow the band members to express the factors that motivate them toward marching band competitions. A 5-point Likert scale was used to record subject's response

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    No full text
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

This Web-based SSB Evaluation System is a web-based human resource evaluation or remuneration system, which has been developed to replace the current paperwork used in Human Resource Department (HRD) in UM. By providing a computerized SSB Evaluation form, the HRD can gather all the data entered by users using a user-friendly interface of SSB form instead of paper form. This will help to increase the quality and accuracy in data keeping, yet providing an up-to-date and economical way of information management. Moreover, this proposed system will provide safeguards to ensure reliability, accuracy and confidentiality of the information. It will also reduce the data storage cost and increase the efficiency of data storage. The Web-based SSB Evaluation System consists of a number of modules or sections. The modules are: Staff Section which enable staffs to fill in the SSB Evaluation forms; Supervisor Section which enables supervisor to view the record of the particular staff supervised by him/her, evaluate staff's performance and fill up the assessment part in SSB Evaluation forms; HRD Section which enables authorize staff to view the reports of evaluations and finally, the administrator's section which enables the administrator to keep track staffs who have submitted the SSB evaluation form on the selected date. The proposed system was developed by using Waterfall with Prototyping Model as the methodology for system development, JSP as web programming language, MySQL database and Tomcat as the web server

Project management Reference Framework (RF) for the Malaysian public projects / Mohd Firdaus Mustaffa Kamal

    No full text
The inconsistent performance of the public project delivery has spawned the needs to research and identify the underlying issues that affect the public project management capability. One essential finding contributing to this issue was the absence of a commonly recognized Reference Framework (RF) for the public project management. It has been conceived that the absence of such RF has resulted in the inadequate provision of the public project management standard of procedure (SOP) that has in part contributed to the poor performance of the public projects as been highlighted in series of the Auditors1 General Annual Report for the year 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. This research aims to propose a commonly recognized project management RF that can be used to assist in designing and identifying the provisional needs for the public project SOP. Mixed method approach has been selected as the main method for this research which adopted the sequential exploratory approach. Interviews and questionnaires survey are the main tools used for the data collection. The respondents are mainly professional practitioners within the construction industry who is actively involved in the management of projects. Collected data has been analyzed with the assist of data analysis software namely N-Vivo, Winstep (RASCH) and Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). From the result of the analysis, a working framework has been produced and the framework is further validated and tested through two focus groups discussion and through training module adequacy assessment. The findings conceived that the framework is appropriate and can be proposed to be used by the public project management to assist in designing new SOP, and also it has been accepted that this RF can also be applied for the general practice of project management

The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between physical activity, body mass index (BMI), socioeconomic status and academic achievement. The data were collected from the full population of form four student of Klang High School in District Of Klang Selangor, Malaysia in 201 l.(n=274)Specifically physical activity, BMI and socioeconomic status were compared to mathematics scores on the form four students of Klang High School students. Physical Education teachers annually receive training in anthropometry and data entry measurement prior to data collection. For the purpose of this study, school record data that include matemahtical scores from System Analysis for Examination in Malaysia and BMI information for students were used. This study examined the physical activity level measured by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form and the data for socioeconomic status was gathered from Student Information System (SMM) of Klang High School. Multiple regression and multiple correlations was used to analyzed the data. Physical activity had a negative relationship with academic achievement. The multiple regression and multiple correlation for physical activity, indicate that physical activity levels (0.075) was not significant predictor of academic achievement (p <0.001). BMI and socioeconomic status had a positive relationship with academic achievement. The multiple regression and multiple correlation for academic achievement, indicate, the scores are positively correlated with both 'body mass index, 0.006 (p< 0.01) and socioeconomic status, 0.002(p <0.01). The study suggests that the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement is weak

The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of athlete towards parental support and pressure. A total of eighty-one athlete (N=81) was involved via random sampling in this study. The method of this study were descriptive and using intrumentations of demographic questionnaire and the athlete questionnaire (support and pressure). Based on the discriptive statistics showed that the parental support scale are from 1.40 - 2.23 for the average of mother's total support which is 'never' and 'rarely' support. For father's mean in average support is from 1.69 - 2.38. The result also shown the relationship between parent involvement in athletes' sport and their support for mother, (p = 0.05, r = 0.22) and (p = 0.000, r = 0.58) for father. The result also show the relation between parental pressure and parental involvement in athletes' sport participation which is it shown a significant (p = 0.002, r = 0.34) for mother and (p = 0.000, r = 0.42) for father which is both has positive relation

Dissipative Range Scaling of Higher Order Structure Functions for Velocity and Passive Scalars

    No full text
Differently to Kolmogorov's second similarity hypothesis, we find that the 2n-th order velocity and scalar structure functions scale with n-th order moment of the energy dissipation and the scalar dissipation, respectively. The origins of this scaling are analyzed by the transport equations of the fourth order velocity and scalar increment moments and by direct numerical simulations
