The time of the short Twentieth Century. Growth of values and decay of matter,

    No full text
The article deals with some cultural reflections and new methodologies developed within a European research project focused on the enhancement of the architectural heritage built in the first half of Twentieth Century. On such a heritage, still not historicized, the community as a whole does not express unanimous judgements of value. In the meantimethis particular heritage it is extremely fragile with respect to the passage of time. The time of the «short century» acts in a different way, increasing the value of the architectures (in terms of critical fortune and authorship) but, also, highlighting its fragility and, at times, its ideation and constructive defects. The research aims at defining criteria to identify the most significant architectures and some methodologies of social inclusion for their future valorisation

Researches and projects between conservation and renovation for the future of the cities

    No full text
The paper proposes the synthesis of some recent research experiences carried out by the authors in Genoa and Liguria Region. These researches, committed by public authorities (Ministry of Cultural Goods and Heritage, Regional Department of Culture) and public owners (as the University of Genoa) are both theoretical and applied to single buildings or complexes. Objects of the researches are, in some case, ancient monuments (in need of re-use, renovation and restoration) located in the consolidated tissue of the contemporary city. In other cases we worked on Architectures of Modern Movement, spread off in or whole region, that need to be known and appreciated by the community, as first, and conserved and reused keeping attention to architectural, social, historical and constructive values. All the researches show a high interdisciplinary level among experts in architectural restoration and conservation, consolidation of traditional buildings, history and archival research, chemistry, ICT and digitalization, energy efficiency and thermal enhancements, technical equipment. These works has led to important repercussions in terms of safeguarding, restoration, renovation and re-use, social engagement with significant impacts on the future of the contemporary city. To quote some examples, we worked on the monumental complex of the Albergo dei Poveri in Genova (almost 60.000 square meters of total covered surface, built from XVII to XIX C.), preparing a general masterplan for its complete reuse and restoration (for crowdfunding). Another real case has been the historic palace Belimbau (one of the most important of Rolli Palaces in XVII C.) and thanks to our research and activities the University obtained funds to restore the monumental rooms and open them to the city. We also worked on the ancient former church of the Jesuits’ college (XVII C.) now abandoned and in need of a future destination and on the Prince Andrea Doria's Palace, one of the major Renaissance Villas in Genoa and, recently, on the Doge's Palace in the heart of the cit

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Franco Albini et le Musée du Trésor de la Cathédral San Lorenzo à Gênes. Problèmes de conception, construction et conservation

    No full text

A facile method to oxidize carbon nanotubes in controlled flow of oxygen at 350 °C

The functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a very important step in many applications but it is still a very complex and variable task. This work shows an efficient, easily reproducible and optimal method to introduce oxygenated functional groups to CNTs by treating them for 60′ at 350 °C with a mixture of 2% oxygen in argon. The oxidized nanotubes were characterized through FT-IR, Raman and TGA to verify the quality of the oxidation and the lattice integrity of the treated CNTs. The results demonstrate that the treated nanotubes are not damaged even after introducing a significant number of new groups. This methodology could be easily tuned to functionalize other types of graphitic materials

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Reconstruct to Reinhabit: New Life for an Abandoned and Ruined Medieval Village in Italy

    No full text
The applied research presented here covers the topic of the reconstruction of architectural Cultural Heritage ruined after a catastrophic event and subsequently abandoned. This is a recurring problem in many Italian territories, inland and coastal, which have seen a progressive depopulation not only as a result of changed economic and social conditions but also—in the more distant past—of earthquake damage. The reconstruction of physical structures thus becomes the ‘picklock’ for tackling a wider problem, such as that of the revitalization and repopulation of minor villages of potential historical and cultural value but currently outside even the local tourism circuits. Taking into account the theoretical and methodological debate within protection and preservation of heritage, on the concepts of identity and authenticity, the research provided an operational contribution to the municipality of a small village on the Ligurian coast, Andora Borgo Castello, to draw up guidelines for the reconstruction of the medieval settlement, as part of a revitalization project financed by the Recovery Plan

Simulation of new policies for the baggage check in the security gates of the airports: the Logiscan case study

In recent years, the trend to mix in the same airports legacy and low-cost companies is heavily affecting the airport operations, stressing the security checks in particular. In fact, low-cost companies force the airports to add additional and strict rules for the hand baggage allowance, with additional checks in the security gates, introducing delays for all the passengers, including the legacy ones. Moreover, recent changes to the rules for hand luggage allowance introduced by legacy airlines are forcing the airport operations management to think of new strategies to automate the entire security check process. One of the most advanced systems presently available to speed up the security operations is Logiscan, developed by Datalogic e Logital in collaboration with the "Aeroporto Guglielmo Marconi di Bologna S.p.A.", the company managing the Bologna Airport. The system automates the operations of size and weight measures and allowance checks and, in conjunction with a redesign of the queuing system, aims to improve the overall system efficiency in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In order to check the new overall system, the entire process has been modeled and analyzed by means of AirSIM, a simulation tool for airport operations based on the well-known OMNeT++ Discrete Event Simulator. AirSIM is an object-oriented simulator able to describe the behavior of different passenger types, as well as to incorporate the logic of different flow management policies. In this paper we will show both how AirSIM can be used to analyze and choose the different parameters of the new security system of an airport, and how the overall system performances can be enhance
