Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Biology topics perceived as different by High School Pupils of Kasama and Mungwi Districts of Zambia
This study aimed at identifying which topics pupils perceived as difficult to learn in high school biology based on high schools in Kasama and Mungwi districts. It also examined the reasons for these difficulties and came up with recommendations on how to overcome the difficulties. Eleven heads of departments, 19 biology teachers and 451 high school pupils constituted the sample. The data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured
interviews. All the heads of departments, biology teachers and pupils completed the
questionnaire. The 19 biology teachers and 66 out of 451 pupils attended the follow-up oral interviews. Results of the study revealed that the most difficult topics in descending order of difficulty were; Mendelian genetics, mitosis and meiosis, genes and chromosomes, DNA synthesis, skeletal system and evolution. The identified the reasons why pupils experienced
challenges in learning the above topics as the following: the topics were characterized by complex terms; teachers were not conducting practical laboratory work but taught theoretically; lack of teaching and learning resources including suitable text books and failure by the teachers to use ICT in the classroom. The study also established that neither pupils nor teachers had access to internet facilities at the schools. Some teachers failed to handle the
difficult topics as evidenced by their poor explanation of concepts, and some of the teachers did not have the right qualification to handle senior classes. Gender differences were identified as having an impact on the pupils’ perception of learning difficulties. The teachers
of biology agreed that gender had an effect on the pupils’ perception of learning difficulties but they did not agreed on which gender had a better or a more positive perception of learning difficulties. The study established that a variety of teaching strategies would help pupils learn
the difficult topics effectively well. These strategies included: strict lesson planning by teachers, use of adequate teaching and learning resources, incorporating ICT in the classroom,promoting active learner-centred teaching strategies and employing effective communication skills characterised by clear explanations coupled with real-life practical examples. The study
also showed that the biology teachers would lessen pupils’ learning challenges through
motivating their pupils, administeringm remedial work to slow learners, revising the difficult topics with pupils, and giving to pupis some written assignments or research work followed by a feedback on such work
Chemistry topics perceived as difficult to learn by secondary school pupils of Kasama, Luwingu, Mbala and Mungwi districts of Northern Province of Zambia
Senior secondary school pupils have, for some time now, exhibited
unsatisfactory performance in some chemistry topics that are perceived
as difficult to learn in their school certificate and General Certificate of
Education (GCE) Examinations.
This study was a survey and aimed at identifying topics pupils perceived
as difficult to learn in secondary school ‘O’-Level chemistry. It was conducted
in 8 secondary schools in Kasama, Luwingu, Mbala and Mungwi districts.
The study also established reasons for pupils’ learning difficulties. Eight
heads of departments, 16 chemistry teachers and 221 secondary school
pupils constituted the sample. Data were collected through questionnaires
and semi-structured interviews. Heads of departments, chemistry teachers
and pupils completed questionnaires. Sixteen (16) chemistry teachers
and 68 pupils attended follow-up oral interviews. Qualitative data were
analysed by noting patterns, themes and categories (Cohen & Morris,
2008). Quantitative data captured in this study were analysed by making
use of software, Excel. This analysis made use of descriptive statistics
which involved: frequency tables, charts and percentages. Cohen & Morris
(2008) recommend this and state that numeric data analysis can easily be
performed using software packages such as SPSS, Minitab or Excel. Results
of the study revealed that the most difficult topics were: mole concept and
stoichiometry, electrolysis, organic chemistry and Redox.
The reasons for pupils’ challenges included: general learners’ difficulties
referring to poor pupils’ mathematical skills, complex scientific terms and
language, lack of teaching and learning resources, lack of practical work or
activities and pupils’ poor attitude towards chemistry as a subject; teacher’s
incompetence which embodies inadequate explanation, unsuitable pace of
delivery, lack of knowledge, difficult language and terminology used and
inexperience; inadequate infrastructure referring to lack of laboratories
and equipment, apparatus and other materials, and unsuitable teaching
methods used as the only teaching methods used were ‘question and answer’
sessions, group discussions, demonstrations and lectures
