A Discourse Analysis on Character's Utterances in the Ice Age 4 Movie by Using Austin's Speech Act Theory
In the study of language use, what the people do in saying something is called speech act. The purpose of this research was to reveal meaning of Manny’s utterances by using Austin’s speech act theory in the Ice Age 4 Movie. The research design was descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data of this research were chosen by using elicitation technique. The data were analysed by both using Austin's speech act theory to reveal the meaning and felicity conditions to know whether or not the utterance achieved its goal. The results showed that by using Austin's speech act theory could reveal the meaning of the characters' utterance. From those 11 utterances, they had certain meanings in certain context. There were seven utterances that categorized as felicity conditions and four utterances as the infelicity conditions. It indicated that when people say something, they do something
Improving the Seventh Grade Students' Vocabulary Achievement by Using English Songs at SMPN 2 Kencong Jember
The research design used in this research was a Classroom Action Research. The objectives of this research were to improve the seventh grade students' participation and vocabulary achievement in the vocabulary teaching and learning process by using English Songs at SMPN 2 Kencong Jember. The research area and the subjects of the research were determined by using purposive method. The students of class VII-C were chosen as the research subjects in this research. The data collection methods of the research were vocabulary achievement test, observation, interview, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed by using percentage formula. This research was conducted in two Cycles to meet the criteria of success. The result of this research showed improvement at the students’ participation and vocabulary achievement. At the second cycle there were 86% students were active and 79% students achieved the standard score minimum. Based on these results, it was known that the use of English Songs could improve the VII-C students' participation and their vocabulary achievement
THE EFFECT OF USING JAZZ CHANTS ON THE ELEVENTH GRADE
The design used in this research was experimental research. The purpose
of conducting this research was to know whether or not there is a significant effect
of using Jazz Chants on the eleventh grade students’ pronunciation achievement at
SMA Plus Darul Hikmah Jember in the 2016/2017 academic year. The researcher
used Jazz Chants because the researcher believed that it could give effect to XI
IPS 1 students’ pronunciation achievement during the teaching and learning
process.
In this research, the researcher used Jazz Chants as media for teaching
pronunciation. Jazz Chants is a kind of songs that provide stress, rhythm, and
intonation of a natural spoken language. Besides, the researcher believe that Jazz
Chants could help the students to pronounce and to memorize vowel sounds (ɪ, iː,
uː, ə, æ), consonant sounds (s, ʃ, θ, tʃ, dʒ), and diphthong sounds (eɪ, ɛə, aɪ, ʊə, ɔɪ.
aʊ, ɪə, əʊ) in the English words.
This research was conducted on 5 August up to 20 august 2016. The result
of homogeneity test showed that the respondents were homogenous. That is why,
the researcher used lottery to decide the experimental group (XI IPS 1) and the
control group (XI IPS 2). The researcher gave the treatment, that was, using Jazz
Chants in teaching pronunciation to the experimental group. On the other hand,
there was no media used for the control group. The researcher taught those groups
in two meetings.
After the teaching and learning process, the researcher conducted a try-out
test to the other class that was not the experimental and the control. The researcher
gave 55 items in the form of isolated words for each student. The result of the tryout
test
showed
that
there
were
50 items
considered
as
sufficient
and
5
as
difficult.
Therefore,
the researcher omitted the 5 items and used the 50 items to be the
materials for the posttest for both the experimental and the control groups. The result of the posttest showed that the significant value on the t-test
was 0.000 and it was less then 0.05. It indicated that the result of t-test analysis
was significant. So it proved that there was a significant mean difference between
the experimental group and control group. In general, the result of the research
showed that the students in the experimental group got better scores in
pronunciation achievement than those in the control group. It happened because
the students in the experimental group were taught by using Jazz Chants. Thus, it
could be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Jazz Chants on the
eleventh grade students’ pronunciation achievement at SMA Plus Darul Hikmah

The Effect Of Giving Non-Verbal Reinforcement On Tense Ability Of The Seventh Grade Students At SMPN 10 JEMBER In The 2006/2007 Academic Year
Tense as a part of english grammar is very important in learning english. Mastering tense can help students to learn the language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing in general, the students of junior high school still find difficulty in applying tense
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
