Qualities" from philosophical sources. It is a novel that has produced so many overriding metaphors through which we can better understand the crises of the social identity on the horizont of the last modernity in Europe. Much of the key-concepts that helped in creating the so called "Leyend of Modernity" start to vanish in an irremediable way: not only did
Musil trace the disappearance of the support for national aspirations and
social cohesion, he also showed us how culture is a mad carrousel of collapsed expectations, and how the prevailing idea of "subjectivity" lacks today any solid or essential nucleus. In the middle of this disenchanted landscape of Europe, where all the modern and clasical illusions became
nothing, appears however "a new human being", since the man "without qualities" is the man with endless possibilities too.[ES] El presente ensayo es una interpretación de la novela de Robert Musil “El hombre sin atributos” a partir de fuentes filosóficas. Se trata de una obra que ha producido algunas metáforas decisivas para comprender las crisis de la identidad social en el horizonte de la última modernidad europea. Digital Scholarship in the Humanities. 2019;34(3):582-605.During World War I (WWI), between 1916 and 1917, Robert Musil was the chief editor of the Tiroler Soldaten-Zeitung in Bozen. This activity probably also involved authorship of articles and has posed a philological problem to scholars, who have not been able to attribute with certainty a range of relatively short texts to Musil. With this article, we present a new approach that combines philological research with stylometric methods. Exploration of WWI archives and digitization of historical documents were paired with application of authorship attribution techniques, following extensive evaluation. To build the training set, we adapted the ‘impostors method’ by grouping three ‘distractor authors’ (similar to Musil in terms of style) and three actual candidates for authorship. In the test set, we developed two designs for tackling the issue of text length: a combinatory design, where longer chunks were composed by the juxtaposition of short texts; a simplified design, where the texts for attribution were merged with already attributed texts. Results of our experiment suggest that Musil attribution may be disproved with a high level of confidence for ten texts that were more probably written by a less well-known author, Albert Ritter. We carried out a keyness analysis on the specific words preferred or avoided by the two authors, which not only corroborated the results of the quantitative analysis but also findings from Musil philology. No full textThis article builds on a paper for a conference that set out to assess the importance of Robert Musil (a central figure in the evolution of twentieth-century culture and author of the encyclopedic novel, The Man without Qualities) with respect to the areas of science and technology in which, as qualified engineer and experimental psychologist, he had wide experience. The article focuses in particular on the challenges that I met when rendering into English some of the entries in Musil's diaries that were concerned with science and related matters. This task threw up several categories of problems for the translator including lexis (particularly on the way that a given word sends ripples of reference across different semantic fields), etymology (to which Musil was highly sensitive) and syntax (which he approached with an engineer's sense of the stresses in a sentence exerted by factors such as emphasis). In the present article I analyse a number of sample texts from different parts of Musil's ouevre that bear on such problems; the samples include extracts from the diaries dealing with the impact of science and technology on education, from one of his essays, and from a prose sketch. On the basis of these analyses, I explore representative difficulties that are faced by the translator and offer some suggestions about how the task of translation might be approached
