The Art of De-Bordering. How the Theater of Cantieri Meticci Challenges the Lines Between Citizens and Non-Citizens
No full textExploring both the ambivalence of the theatrical metaphor of cosmopolitan solidarity and how this metaphoric dimension risks collapsing with the physical proximity of the ‘other’, this chapter investigates the role of participatory theater in challenging the mainstream narrative of migration governmentality while also promoting social coexistence between citizens and newcomers. It focuses on the artistic and social work of Cantieri Meticci – a theater company based and active in Bologna (Italy) involving asylum seekers, refugees, migrants, and Italian citizens – to highlight how they transform the theatrical metaphor of cosmopolitan solidarity into a physical space where citizens and non-citizens can interact and perform both commonality and diversity, perceiving themselves as part of the same symbolic universe. Bringing refugees into being as political agents rather than framing them as political ‘abjects’ requiring discipline or aid, Cantieri Meticci courageously exploits the performative power of theater to intervene in political debates concerning who counts as a citizen of modern Europe. As such, it provides an insight into other methods of being political subjects ‘before and beyond the law’
Le virtù della contraddizione. Quando la sociologia si fa etica
No full textMercato etico, consumo produttivo, beni pubblici che diventano
privati, dono che produce profitti, guerra umanitaria, benessere
che genera malessere, crescita che chiama in causa la decrescita:
sono solo alcuni dei “fenomeni emergenti” che oggi determinano
la contraddizione e sfidano le tradizionali spiegazioni che la
teoria sociologica ci ha offerto.
Il volume affronta la natura paradossale di un’etica che si rivela necessaria e problematica, proponendosi di andare contro l’opinione comune, esplicitando che i paradossi e le contraddizioni sono dappertutto.
Dalla tragedia greca al cristianesimo romano, dall’avvento della
modernità all’attuale società del rischio, questo percorso a metà tra
storia delle idee e teoria della società focalizza i processi secondo
cui vengono “giustificati” alcuni valori e negati altri, accettate alcune
pratiche e condannate altre: che si tratti della maniera di percepire il corpo o la morte, di relazionarsi con il sacro o con la scienza, di credere o meno nell’universalità dei diritti umani.
Mai prescindendo dal contesto storico sociale nel quale la riflessione
sull’etica si è dipanata, il libro presenta una riflessione sulla
necessità di rinvenire un sostegno alla convivenza sociale, che salvaguardi al contempo la libertà e la responsabilità dell’essere umano.
Ne scaturisce un libro che non propone soluzioni partendo da giudizi
di valore, ma indica percorsi di riflessione, legittima aperture, fa
intravedere ipotesi di speranza. Costruendo così una mappa che riconosce e dà cittadinanza alla contraddizione

Humanitarian Tarzanism: the tension between inequality and solidarity
No full textSince the early 1990s, the relative stability that had characterized
Europe’s post-war asylum regime has given way to radical and widespread
restrictive policy change, provoking one of the worst contemporary
“migration crisis”. Migration has been high on Europe’s agenda and a
main cause of concern for European citizens, alarmed by the levels of
“illegal” migration as well as by the humanitarian duty of safeguarding
the rights of people who are attempting to cross the borders. Focusing on
«humanitarian narratives» as a communicative structure that disseminates
the moral imperative to act on vulnerable others through a wide repertoire of
popular genres, this paper examines the mediated representations of distant
human suffering as it is constructed in public communication within two
institutional contexts of humanitarian aid organizations and border control
agencies. Highlighting how the discourses typically associated with the
humanitarian aid organizations are today gaining importance in the context
of border control, the paper sheds light on how this discursive dislocation
of humanitarian narratives takes place and what types of political and
epistemological implications it has

Full text linkIn line with the European self-description of its borders as a space of
“humanitarian securitization,” this article approaches the border as a
network of mediations around migrants and refugees, where emotions
of fear and empathy co-exist through digital connectivities—what we
call the “mediatized border.” Drawing on media, security, and gender
studies, we demonstrate how such techno-affective networks are
constitutive of (rather than simply complementary to) the border as a
hybrid site of both military protection and care for the vulnerable. We
do this through hermeneutic and participatory engagements with the
two main border sites of the 2015 migration “crisis,” Italy and Greece,
and discuss their implications on our understanding of the power
relationships of human mobility

No full textThis essay aims to advance a multidisciplinary reflection on the different forms of civic engagement and political participation proposed by contemporary public art and urban design, as fields wherein citizens may experiment with diverse methods of participation in the transformation of the territories of societal life. The chapter draws upon a two-year research program on Italian contemporary participatory public art and urban design entitled Governare ad Arte (‘To Govern Artfully’), which was funded by the Sardinia Region. By establishing a cross-disciplinary dialogue between different academic fields – sociology, political science, cultural and media studies, rhetoric, architecture, urban studies, design, curatorial and artistic research – and across diverse geographic contexts – from Sardinia to Queensland, New York to Bologna, Hasselt and Genk to L’Aquila, Rio de Janeiro to Utrecht – the authors reflect on how heterogeneous experiences deal with contemporary territorial governance. In so doing, they contribute to advancing the cross-disciplinary debate on political participation and performative citizenship

dello spettatore narciso, sino al neo-razzismo giustificato dall’allarme securitario), la
comunicazione umanitaria deve andare oltre il conformismo narrativo del buonismo ingenuo,
superando le rappresentazioni stereotipate tipiche degli appelli alla compassione e alla carità.
Piuttosto, deve affrontare temi quali le migrazioni e i diritti umani come una questione strutturale
relativa alla cittadinanza, enfatizzando gli aspetti etici e politici della vulnerabilità umana: un

No full textConsumo critico, etico, responsabile, sostenibile, attivismo da supermercato sono solo alcuni dei termini proliferati negli ultimi anni per tentare di rendere dicibile una realtà in rapido sviluppo, che possiamo considerare la manifestazione più interessante di una nuova domanda di partecipazione dal basso, per certi versi speculare, per altri consequenziale, alla denunciata crisi di fiducia nelle istituzioni economiche e politiche, in particolare nella loro rappresentanza. Un fenomeno che vede la società civile assumere un ruolo centrale in quanto attore attivo nei rapporti che mantiene con Stato e mercato, nuove forme di cittadinanza, all’origine di inediti percorsi di collaborazione tra una molteplicità di attori; un processo di reciproca contaminazione il cui esito è tutt’altro che scontato.Critical Consumption, Ethics, Responsibility, Sustenance, Supermarket Activism. There are just a few of the terms spread around in recent years which attempt to describe a new reality, that we may consider as the most interesting form of a rising participation, for some reasons copying and then, as a result there is a lack of trust in economic institutions. A phenomenon not so obvious to the onlooker gives civic society a central role, which is the main actor. This main actor maintains relationships with public institutions together with the market. New forms of citizenship are created and new forms of co-operation between different actors are created. As not clearly identifiable by the onlooker, this is a process of mutual contamination
