Structural and electronic features of Wells-Dawson polyoxometalates
Density functional theory approach is used to study structural and electronic features of X2M18O62 q− Wells-Dawson (or simply ‘Dawson’) polyoxometalates (POM). We deeply concentrated on the isomerism in this family of POMs because isomerism is related to the possibility of tuning some properties with controlled geometrical changes, such as the different location of a given atom (positional isomerism) or a rotation of a fragment of the molecule (rotational isomerism). We have evaluated the relative stability of the isomers considering only the [W18O54] cage with and without the internal anions [(XO4)2] q−
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Peroxynitrite reductase activity of selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase: a computational study
The peroxynitrite reductase activity of selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase (GPx) has been investigated using density functional theory calculations for peroxynitrite/peroxynitrous acid (ONOO-/ONOOH) substrates through two different "oxidation" and "nitration" pathways. In the oxidation pathway for ONOO-, the oxidation of GPx and the subsequent formation of the selenenic acid (E-Se-OH) occur through a concerted mechanism with an energy barrier of 4.7 (3.7) kcal/mol, which is in good agreement with the computed value of 7.1 kcal/mol for the drug ebselen and the experimentally measured barrier of 8.8 kcal/mol for both ebselen and GPx. For ONOOH, the formation of the E-Se-OH prefers a stepwise mechanism with an overall barrier of 6.9 (11.3) kcal/mol, which is 10.2 (11.2) kcal/mol lower than that for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), indicating that ONOOH is a more efficient substrate for GPx oxidation. It has been demonstrated that the active site Gln83 residue plays a critical role during the oxidation process, which is consistent with the experimental suggestions. The nitration of GPx by ONOOH produces a nitro (E-Se-NO2) product via either of two different mechanisms, isomerization and direct, having almost the same barrier heights. A comparison between the rate-determining barriers of the oxidation and nitration pathways suggests that the oxidation of GPx by ONOOH is more preferable than its nitration. A DFT study of the mechanism of Ni superoxide dismutase (NiSOD): role of the active site cysteine-6 residue in the oxidative half-reaction
In the present DFT study, the catalytic mechanism of H2O2 formation in the oxidative half-reaction of NiSOD, E-Ni(II) + O2- + 2H+ --> E-Ni(III) + H2O2, has been investigated. The main objective of this study is to investigate the source of two protons required in this half-reaction. The proposed mechanism consists of two steps: superoxide coordination and H2O2 formation. The effect of protonation of Cys6 and the proton donating roles of side chains (S) and backbones (B) of His1, Asp3, Cys6, and Tyr9 residues in these two steps have been studied in detail. For protonated Cys6, superoxide binding generates a Ni(III)-O2H species in a process that is exothermic by 17.4 kcal/mol (in protein environment using the continuum model). From the Ni(III)-O2H species, H2O2 formation occurs through a proton donation by His1 via Tyr9, which relative to the resting position of the enzyme is exothermic by 4.9 kcal/mol. In this pathway, a proton donating role of His1 residue is proposed. However, for unprotonated Cys6, a Ni(II)-O2- species is generated in a process that is exothermic by 11.3 kcal/mol. From the Ni(II)-O2- species, the only feasible pathway for H2O2 formation is through donation of protons by the Tyr9(S)-Asp3(S) pair. The results discussed in this study elucidate the role of the active site residues in the catalytic cycle and provide intricate details of the complex functioning of this enzyme
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
