ENGELSK ABSTRACT:
Rasmus Munksgaard and Oskar Enghoff: Gender and choice of method among social science masters students
Feminist theory and research have argued that gender and research methods are related in two ways: women are more likely to employ qualitative methods, and gender affects choice of research area. While previous research on peer-reviewed publications supports these claims, the authors acknowledge that the data is biased due to the homogenizing mechanisms of academic professionalization and peer-review. We complement these previous studies with an analysis of ”lower-level academic production”, specifically 1,103 master’s theses, providing an alternate angle to the study of gender and research design. We employ recent innovations in digital text analysis, and estimate a structural topic model of the corpora to model the latent thematic structure. Using this model, we test the proposed links between gender, research methods and research area. We find that female students are more likely to employ qualitative methods than men, and that some research areas are gendered. Topic modeling is shown to be an efficient tool in the analysis of academic texts.

Intimate Partner Homicide in Denmark: A Study of the Processes and Patterns Preceding the Homicides
This thesis explores patterns in 23 intimate partner homicides in Denmark through a qualitative analysis of court documents. The aim is to develop an analytical understanding of the phenomenon by identifying recurring characteristics among perpetrators, relationship dynamics, conflict types, and by constructing a typology of cases. The study finds that perpetrators are primarily middle-aged men, many of whom suffer from mental illness, are socially marginalized, or have a history of alcohol abuse. Suicidal thoughts and attempts are also common. The analysis of relationship characteristics reveals that most homicides occur in long-term relationships, often marked by physical or psychological violence, control, and conflicts. However, the findings also show that partner homicides can occur in seemingly stable relationships, where violence escalates in connection with separation, jealousy, or loss of control. Five main types of conflict are identified: separation, infidelity, disputes over children, division of property, and substance abuse.Based on the analysis, the thesis presents a typology of five homicide types: existential crisis, control-related homicide, crime of passion, homicide linked to severe mental illness, and escalation of violence. This typology provides a framework for understanding the variation in partner homicides and may inform future prevention efforts. The results of the analysis will be discussed and put into perspective by comparing the findings with other populations, other research, and previously incorporated theory. In addition, the discussion will address the quality of the study with a focus on limitations, data quality, selection bias, and the external validity of the study. The study concludes that it is possible to identify patterns in intimate partner homicide cases, supporting the thesis’ research question. It also highlights the need for preventive measures focusing on the perpetrator’s mental health and social situation. Future research should test the proposed typology on a larger dataset to assess its validity and applicability in broader contexts
Is the metaverse a digital battleground?
Several intergovernmental organizations have expressed concerns regarding the management of conflicts, criminality, and regulation in the future cyberspace, the metaverse. Since the aim of the metaverse is to build a decentralized cyberspace, internal conflicts are thought to be managed by the community. Through a qualitative case study of Decentraland, this study investigates how the users manage internal conflicts in the metaverse.Data consists of blogposts on the forum Decentraland Forum, collected through a strategic historical examination of every blogpost posed from May 2022 till May 2023. The blogposts consist of internal conflicts in the metaverse, the management of internal conflicts or proposals for conflict management in the metaverse Decentraland. Through an inductive thematic coding and document analysis, the blogposts are examined and interpreted with the aim to classify the conflict management forms of the metaverse.Through the analysis, six types of conflict management are identified in relation to Donald Blacks (1990) theory of five elementary forms of conflict management, one thus being unique for this case. The study shows that the forms used to manage internal conflicts in the metaverse are; (1) social control through Voting Power, (2) conflict management through tools such as muting and blocking, (3) negotiation, (4) conflict management through democratic voting and guidelines, (5) deliberate and coerced tolerance, as well as (6) conflicts left for individual management.<br/
"My money, my dream, my love. In a blink of an eye, it was lost" - A Crime Script Analysis of Pig Butchering Scam.
This master’s thesis aims to gain broader knowledge about the stages involved in the type of fraud where romance scam leads to investment fraud, also known as the pig butchering scam. Specifically, the thesis aims to result in a generalized crime script of the pig butchering scam, which can be used as a tool for implementing preventive measures or interventions. The design of the thesis is based on a crime script theory generating case study design, drawing inspiration from the adaptive approach. To address the research question, mixed methods have been employed, with the empirical data consisting of 14 documents in the form of stories shared on the social media platform Reddit, where victims or their relatives describe their experiences with the pig butchering scam. Additionally, three semi-structured interviews have been conducted with professionals who qua their work, have broad experience with romance scam, investment fraud and manipulation techniques.Based on the analysis, several standardized event sequences that generally apply to the pig butchering scam have been identified. Consequently, a generalized crime script has been derived, consisting of four stages: preparation, before, during, and after, along with multiple processes involved in each stage. The pig butchering scam is an example of how offenders attempt to circumvent common prevention measures or interventions. However, based on the derived crime script, two preventive interventions have been identified that can have a preventive effect, regardless of the evolvement of modus operandi in the pig butchering scam over time. The two preventive measures are: 1) situational crime prevention during the first stage, and 2) increasing public awareness of the pig butchering scam, particularly to pre-vent the initial investment in the third stage

Crime Script analysis: Romance scam
This thesis intends to examine Romance scammers techniques in this criminal act. In an international view there has been a focus on the victims of Romance scam, where the research has examined the consequences and the type of scammers. Beyond these perspectives international research focuses on preventive steps for victims, such as an early psychological effort. In contrast this thesis intends to focus on Romance scammers and their techniques. Our data is collected through qualitative interviews with experts: Specialists in Fraud, the police, and a psychological entertainer. Supplemented with collected empirical data and cases. To analyze this thesis, we used Routine Activity Theory and Rational Choice Theory. Routine Activity Theory uses three elements that explain why the criminal act either fails or is succeedes. On the contrary the Rational Choice Theory explains that the criminal act is to benefit the scammers needs. Our results are based on our empirical data and cases about the phenomenon of Romance scam. This has enabled us to answer the scammers' techniques in a crime script analysis. The crime script is divided into five steps which create an outline of the techniques used by the scammers. In the end of this thesis, reflections will be presented on the possible prevention strategies we have considered based on the prepared crime script. We have incorporated the experts' ideas for preventive strategies. We conclude that the scammers go through five different steps in the act of Romance scam. These steps are throughout regardless of whoever the scammer is or wherever the scammer is staying
Juveniles are the most criminal: A quantitative study of factors associated with recidivism after participating in a worry conversation
The purpose of this master thesis is to examine which factors are associated with recidivism among young people under the age of 18 after participating in a worry conversation with the Police. The motivation behind this thesis is driven by existing research showing that juvenile delinquency is a serious problem that has a negative effect on the juvenile self, families and the society. In addition to this recidivism is especially prevalent among juveniles, due to the fact that approximately half of juveniles who commits a delinquent act recidivize into further delinquent behavior and thereby continues the negative spiral of juvenile delinquency. The ambition is to provide further knowledge as well as contribute to existing research about recidivism in juvenile delinquency and which factors among the young people to be aware of to successfully prevent recidivism. Furthermore, the project aims to contribute with knowledge for the use of the Police to target and improve the worry conversation better in practice. The project is based on a cross-sectional design and the results of the survey is based on a sample of 274 young people under the age of 18 who in 2019 participated in a worry conversation at Sydsjællands- and Lolland-Falsters Police Department. The sample is gathered from the Polices case management system POLSAS, which is made possible due to a cooperation with the same Police Department. These findings have been analyzed by the use of a quantitative research method including a logistic regression model. From here we observe that there is an association between recidivism and the older a juvenile becomes committing their first delinquent act. Also respectively being a boy, having participated in a follow up- conversation after the worry conversation and having committed non-personal criminal behavior prior to the worry conversation, are associated with recidivism
